Beenox working on an Amazing Spider-Man game (legal clarification: THAT IS JUST THE TITLE)
52
As you, let's be frank, knew all along, Activision will release a video game based on The Amazing Spider-Man, the celluloid relaunch of America's favorite wall-crawler. IGN spotted a poster for the game at the New York Comic-Con, going on ... well, right now, as a matter of fact.
Though its existence is no surprise, the fact that it's being developed by Beenox may just be. Should it release alongside the film in July, The Amazing Spider-Man will follow Beenox's dismal Spider-Man: Edge of Time by just nine months.
Nine months. Like a baby.
On the bright side, Amazing Spider-Man will likely only feature one Spidey as compared to Edge of Time's two Spideys. So maybe it only needs half as much development time? Maybe?

Half the Spidermen again? Wait, will the next game only feature half a Spiderman?

How many damned Spider Man games have there been in the last decade >.>?
But on a serious note, -- Seriously, HOW MANY?!
Okay, okay, I really liked Treyarch's "Ultimate Spiderman" the art style and the free-roam sandbox experience was pretty cool, although I never personally played it, but I did watch my others play it.

They're sort of in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation right now. Either they make a game that sells well (Activision is waaaaaay past upholding the illusion that they're trying to make "good" Marvel games) and they're stuck cranking one out every year, or they make a game that tanks and they get shuttered.
Of course, the (increasingly likely) 3rd scenario is that they make several licensed games that sell well enough for them to graduate to the "big leagues" and be slave-chained to a larger annual franchise like Call of Duty, (or formerly) Guitar Hero/Tony Hawk. I mean, that's what happened with Raven, Treyarch, and Neversoft, right?

TRUTH.
I feel bad for the people working at Beenox, because they get slammed even though they might be really good at what they do.
Dude, the guys have NINE MONTHS, probably peanuts for a budget, and probably a bunch of dumb contractual stipulations like "it has to be a character based 3rd person game" and "it has to have at least 8 hours of gameplay", and "it has to be like the movie, except we're not going to show you the movie" and "we get to come in every month and muss up your design".
Dude, if you put the guys at Valve or Blizzard in that situation, it would still be a shitty game in the end.

Thank goodness you clarified cause that "Fantastic" Four game was anything but.
Fingers crossed for this though. I'm hoping for some more Grand Theft Spidey type gameplay if that's what Beenox has in mind.

Uh, besides the reviewers, who have to admit that EoT is better than SD by leaps and bounds, has anyone played the Beenox games? Because SD wasn't great, but wasn't terrible, and EoT certainly isn't "dismal". It's actually a well executed game. Beenox learned a lot from their mistakes and can probably be more successful at a movie adaptation than Treyarch was. Spider-Man 1 and 3 were awful because of poor engine/camera designs. Let's not forget Shaba's Web of Shadows, which looked awesome, and even played great at times, but was a giant WTF. I think Justin's just cranky for having to get up so early and the commentors, who probably haven't played the games, are joining in mob mentality.

The combat might have been tweaked since they had more time and less Spideys to divide the moves into (Amazing in SD was gimped compared to others). However, I still got WWWWAAAAYYYY more enjoyment out of SD. Benox's reasoning behind not making a sandbox was so you can constantly enjoy new scenery. That excuse couldn't hold up in EoT since you spent the WHOLE GAME IN THE SAME BUILDING.
I honestly thought Justin was overreacting too, until I actually played the game. By the time I was done all I could think was "WTF that's it?". I was one of the people rooting for a 2099 game, because of the small experience in SD outside of Alchemax. Apparently Benox got the wrong message...
Activision needs to realize that just because a dev can pull off a licensed game, doesn't mean they can do nearly the same for a movie game (High Moon). All Benox really had going for it is storytelling. Most movie game don't have much, if any story since you've already watched it. Without a story I can't imagine a Benox being any game good, especially if they still refuse to do sandbox.

@Oddgirl That was the peak of Spider-man gaming. I can see why they didn't go open world in SD, which had hints of brilliance, but maybe they will go with the SM2 formula, make it feel clean, fun and deep? Just FMV the reason he became spidey and let us play as him. Man I miss 2! Ultimate wasn't bad either, but it was no 2.

I don't know if they are a mediocre developer or that their development cycle is forced to be so short, but the last 2 Spider-Man games they have worked on have been really subpar to me. Give these guys 2 full years on a Spider-Man game and maybe they can do something special with it.
Also, movie tie in = not exciting.

Best Spider-Man game ever was the tie in with Spider-Man 2, purely because they let you swing around a city like Spider-Man. Pretty simple! So what did they do? They tried everything apart from that. Web of Shadows is supposedly ok because it returned to that forumla, but I've never bothered to play it.
Also, I CANNOT accept Spider-Man with blue fingers. It just looks wrong. I really hope this movie fails, maybe Hollywood will then learn to stop remaking things that aren't even a decade old.

Ultimate Spider-Man was the best because you could explore NYC, it had an engaging story, AND every boss fight was a change of scenery. All Spider-Man 2 had was the first.
Web of Shadows failed because it needed more time for polish. Hell, the second half of the game was almost unplayable because the symbiote infected city made the game lag up & freeze all the time (this was a SINGLE PLAYER game, not Gears 2 multiplayer).

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of making a game about being Spider-Man as opposed to the crap that is being made right now. Getting to know and appreciate the character and what he is about, and making a video game about Spider-Man, not generic, robot-punching action guy in Spider-Man costume.
I certainly wouldn't want a Spider-Man skin in Arkham City, that would just be dumb. That's a Batman game.

I'm sure these games make money because:
A) There are lots of people who don't read reviews, and will buy this because spiderman is on the cover.
B) At this point, the game costs almost nothing to make.

Bring back the good old open world gameplay that was Spider-Man 2.
No more of these closed boxed in levels. Spider-man is one of the few games where I spent a lot of times simply swinging around and trying to kill myself off the empire state building..

Is it possible that EoT wasn't as great as SD (I loved SD) because Beenox had to split their team to work on this and EoT? I'm all for being cynical, but let's be realistic. Beenox isn't going to turn down a project and a movie tie-in doesn't exactly have to set Metacritic on fire. Sounds win/win for Beenox if they can get Activision to give them more time on the next game.
Let's see the Scarlet Spider get some time in the spotlight!
