Naughty Dog says no to single-player DLC for Uncharted 3
54
DLC is all the rage this season (along with dead raccoon headpieces), and publishers are charging the inflated prices expected with such a widespread trend. But trends don't appear out of nowhere -- they come from someone doing it differently, turning left at the fork, zigging where others zag and other motivational business terms. Naughty Dog is doing just that -- those trailblazers -- announcing that there will be no single-player DLC for Uncharted 3.
Naughty Dog said it would rather build a new game than release episodic content, mainly because its DLC ideas are just too awesome. "Dialing back our ambition is difficult," community strategist Arne Meyer said. Justin Richmond, game director, explained in more detail the trials of having such an abundance of amazing ideas:
"Whenever we sit down and think we should do some single-player DLC, someone pitches something and we realize -- that's a five hour level," he said. "We'd rather build out another game than we would do episodic content. We're so small that we can't afford to have a whole team working on DLC." We're going to add this approach to DLC to the extensive list of Naughty Dog's fantastic ideas.

As am I. Single-player DLC is the idea of someome turning off the TV or shutting off the projector when a movie is reaching its climax, considering you don't buy the DLC and it's a continuation or variation of an important narrative.

I'm fine with this. George Lucas could learn a thing or two about finishing a project and then leaving it alone from these guys. CG Jaba is one of the worst things ever.

This is where the concept of Expansion packs comes to play.
I miss those wonderful things. Now it is just overpriced short DLC. =(

so.... does that mean they WILL do an Uncharted 4? (I hope so).

as long as there are stories to tell (and thus money to be made), there can be more Uncharted.
Frankly I'd be sad if there wasn't a 4. It's a bit like Indiana Jones..I was sad when they ended at 3, but then I was even more sad when they brought it back and couldn't live up to the original 3. If Indy 4 had been made after The Last Crusade, the franchise could've lived on longer and still end on a high note.

I'm totally OK with this too.
Problem here too is that if they had single player DLC, people would cry foul about it anyhow and accuse ND of cutting it from the main campaign just for money-grubbing purposes.

The Naughty Gods are probably the best devs in the world, so much quality and dedication to their games, I think only Rocksteady come close to these guys.

I'm sorry, but the creators of Online Only Single Player Games (Diablo 3) and spearheading Cash Shops into games that are already Pay To Play does NOT belong on the list of people good to their players. Try smaller devs, like Trendy Entertainment and Robot Entertainment.
Trendy has been really reaching out to their audience and interacting with the community (they even suffered MY bile and came out being incredibly nice), and Robot just recently updated crashing with their DEMO. Yes, that's right. They patched crashing problems... in a DEMO. They are EPIC.

@ShivanSwordsman No, I think he was right. Blizzard and Valve are two of the most beloved devs in the world in gamers eyes. Does it suck that D3 will require you to be online all the time? Yes, but everyone will still buy it. Why? Because it's going to be a great game made by people who took their time crafting it because they love it and honestly the always online thing isn't that big of a deal. 95% of people who play computer games are always connected to the internet anyway. And how are you going to try to bash Valve? They support their games for years after they publish them, and add a lot of new content for free (TF2 anyone?)
It's cool that you like those two smaller devs, but don't try to take away from two awesome companies who have put in the time to make the fans love them. (BTW I'm not even really a computer gamer, these are just known FACTS).
O and don't worry guys, I'll star the slow clap for ND trying to change the bs practices in the gaming industry.

@Xero Theory He...didn't try to bash Valve. At all. And he's right about Online Only Single Player Game, regardless of how much work goes into the game. "I'm sure glad they aren't releasing it unfinished, and hey, having to be online to play this game by myself isn't that much of a sacrifice, right? Guys?"

@radioactivez0r Yet, if you had any intention of buying D3 before it was announced as always online, you still will. And you'll play it and have fun. There are annoying things that EVERY company does from time to time that people complain about, but they go out and buy the game anyway (EA's Origin and BF3 comes to mind). D3 will require you to be always online...but aren't you usually connected to the internet? I for one am. Will it be annoying to not be able to play the game when I'm not connected? Yeah. Will there be ways around it within the first couple weeks of release? Yeah. Is this the first game in the history to do this? No. So none of this takes away from Blizzards standing or quality as a dev in my eyes.

Fallout proved that you can't do anything worth while with single player DLC, if your game doesn't have any separate modes beyond 'start playing'. Batman has the challenge room stuff, but even then, it's hardly worth it and it should have been included as part of the game by rights.

Or Naughty could be like a lot of PC developers and make DLC's and give them away for free...But then how will CEO's pay for their jets and cocaine to sniff off a diseased hookers ass.

@radioactivez0r 1) What question? 2) How does "DLC is all the rage this season (along with dead raccoon headpieces), and publishers are charging the inflated prices expected with such a widespread trend" answer whatever question I asked? If you think "And this is a surprise why?" is an actual question than you got issues. I was being sarcastic because it's stupid to even think they'd come out with SP DLC. They never have for this series, so why start now. Only people who make Single Player DLC are those who have done it since it's been available to do.

So, pay around $10 total rental to beat it, then never pick it up again. Thanks Naughty Dog, you just saved me $50!

@TaengtheHero I think you're forgetting about the online multiplayer. And to be honest, if them not having single player DLC makes you not want to buy the game, then you probably weren't really going to buy it in the first place.

I'll be honest. This has me thinking about a Day 1 purchase for this game just to support this practice. Nothing makes me trade a game in faster than hearing about extra campaign DLC coming out with 2 weeks of a game's release (looking at you, LA Noire). It's never the only reason I sell a game, but I refuse to buy DLC at extra cost when it should have been on the disc in the first place.

This is great, I hate feeling like I didn't have a full experience.
But, what might be neat - is some of Drakes smaller quests, as PSN game downloads. Similar to the Uncharted Vita game - just showing some of the smaller quests he went on.

I wouldn't have a problem with single player Uncharted DLC so long as it was entirely un-related to the main campaign mode.
I am very happy with this option however.
People hungry for more story can hope they make DLC with awesome new co-op stories to play through!

Gotta respect them for not compromising on the vision or quality of their product. They're out to make a profit, sure, but at least they're not gouging their customers for inferior quality overpriced DLC.

Kind of disappointing that they're not even considering it, but the Uncharted games are always lengthy enough and good for multiple playthroughs.

They'll just overcharge for shitty multiplayer maps. I'll take singleplayer DLC over multiplayer crap any day.
