Report: Ubisoft close to Assassin's Creed film deal with Sony
47
One of the rare video game properties that we think could make a pretty good movie seems to be moving forward. Variety reports that Sony is close to inking a deal with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to create a film franchise based on the Assassin's Creed series. It's reportedly the climax of a months-long bidding war between Sony and other studios like Universal.
With Ubisoft's policy of maintaining creative control over films based on its games, it's a project we're ... if not excited for, certainly cautiously optimistic about. Our one request? Make Desmond, Altair and Ezio a family of art thieves. After that it's all -- as they say in the biz -- movie gravy.

As long as they retain the terrible Italian-English accents, this movie cannot fail.

With my glasses off, that black and red-outlined 'cloth' looks like a kid crouching down wearing a cape.
I didn't think my vision was that bad...
On topic, is this screen grab from a pilot shoot or something?

Hmmmm, not sure if I would like a movie based on the characters we've already played in the AC games, cuz then you're just adapting the video games to a movie. But also not sure how I feel about an AC movie about some random new assassins....what do others think?

Well if you 're less-enthusiastic about it being based on AC 1, here's a proposal: Subject 16 movie.

Watch, as Paul W.S. Anderson directs it and replaces Ezio with Milla Jovovich.

I hope they don't remove the sci-fi elements from the series. I recall that the books don't mention the Desmond stuff at all, and I can see them saying something like, "Oh, that stuff is too crazy and confusing for your average movie theater audience"

I at least hope it's a different protagonist, I don't think I'd want to see Ezio or Altair after playing as them.

This could turn out to be something really special. The possibilities are pretty much endless for AC in cinematic form, coming from a series already woven with cinematic quality in the first place.

I hope they hire an actual writer because, man, have you guys been paying attention to the "story"? Yeesh!

That's cool. So, just so we're on the same page, you like the story ironically, right? Like that feeling where you're watching a train wreck and you just keep watching because, "How could it get any worse?" and then somehow it does. That's what you're talking about, right?

@A Sandwich Fine, I'll bite, though I suspect you're just trolling anyway. The story is fine. I don't play Assassin's Creed games for their gameplay (but having great gameplay in these games doesn't hurt at all). My enjoyment of a game is usually directly related to my enjoyment of its story, unless it's something like a rhythm game which has no story and must rely upon its controls.
If I can't get interested in the reasons why the protagonist is doing X, Y or Z, I don't care enough to keep playing. If the protagonist doesn't interest me, I don't care enough to keep playing. I've slogged through games with shitty controls before for the simple reason that I enjoyed the stories that were being told, as well as the characters involved in the story (Koudelka for PS1 being an example that readily pops into my mind).
The Assassin's Creed storyline and characters fit the bill in what I look for in games: an interesting story and interesting characters. I buy each new game in that series because I actively want to know what happens next. It's good that the games are actually fun to play, as well, so finding out how things are going to turn out for these characters I've become attached to isn't nearly as tasking as it could be.
There. That's my opinion. You don't like the story? That's cool. That's your opinion. But your condescending tone is the reason I wish I could downvote you harder, more than anything.

Hey, I'm not trying to be condescending and make people feel bad, I'm just going for humorous. And I would much rather have a discussion than a downvote contest. If you like Assassin's Creed, great. It's a fun game. But to me the story is some self-absorbed grad student's wet dream about the veracity of Atheism and how the sun is going to blow up the world. I was totally on board until the ending of AC:2 and then I just couldn't get into it anymore. Plus the yearly rehashings and the over-reliance on Ezio is a real crutch for a series that started out with so much promise.

@A Sandwich It is here that we can reach an accord; Ezio was a fine character, and I enjoyed seeing him grow, but I 100% agree with you: 3 games is too much. I take comfort in the fact that Revelations will be his last.
I also agree with the bit about the sun supposedly blowing up. As a base concept, it's lacking. If properly expanded upon, it could be interesting, considering the way it should tie in with the super-interesting back story of those who came before.
As for yearly releases, it's a little daunting. I'm wary of the brand strength being diluted with annual releases. But as long as Ubisoft can continue to keep me interested, I'll buy a new one when it comes out, regardless of how long it takes. When the overall quality of the games begins to suffer as a side effect of them being released annually (or, god forbid, closer together than that), then I won't give them any excuses to lean on. Complacency could easily kill the franchise.
As for the parallels to Atheism, well, I won't get into that. I make it a point to not discuss religion (or lack thereof) on message boards, because that seems to be something no one can fully agree on. I will say that in the context of Assassin's Creed's story, it reflects the points in history during which men have done terrible things while hiding behind the protective veil of religion, government, or any other sort of deeply-entrenched group in a position of authority. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Pieces of Eden are double-edged swords, capable of good or evil depending on the person who wields them.
Unless you're not talking about the villains in the story that work within the church and instead are talking about the ones who came before, and the implied impacts the Pieces of Eden had on history. I see that as less of propaganda and more of a "what if this happened" story element. I sincerely doubt that Ubisoft is on some kind of crusade here with a message like that.
Regardless of whether we see eye-to-eye on everything or not, you're right again in that it's good to have an actual discussion on this kind of stuff. Thanks for that.

Hey, no problem and I hear you on religion. I just feel that Assassin's Creed made waves about being a game that confronted religion head on, and I think the whole "Just kidding, there is no truth" is a much weaker choice than picking something that might be controversial and sticking to it.

holy balls, it's about the sun blowing up? honestly, i've played every console AC and kinda pay attention to the big-picture story (although i prefer the story of the ancestors, being a history/faux-history buff) and i had NO clue that's what was happening... ah well, i mostly play it for the amazing game mechanics and whatnot.

I just read on yahoo that Jake Gylenhall will play the italian Ezio with a posh english accent that doesn't even exist in England, and Shia Labuff will play a fast talking, cynical, skeptical, Desmond.
And Antonio Banderas will play the main villain, the leader of the Borgias. and anthony hopkins has signed on too. I assume it's just to get another english accent in there just for good measure.

I forgot to add that the movie is set to start in modern day, with a diverse clan of computer hackers setting up their own animus with parts stolen from a major company. I'm pretty sure marlon waynes is going to be one of the main guys, and then there will be a hot blond that is incredible with computers, but don't worry her cleavage will always be bursting out of her top.
It's going to be good guys.Don't worry

Am losing faith in the franchise. Revelations will have to be more than Aassasins Creed 2.7 to restore it.

"Through the division, Ubisoft wants to maintain more creative control over the development of its games for other platforms rather than broker traditional one-off licensing deals with studios, something that proved key during the bidding process with Sony."
Sounds like Sony would be mostly distributing the film, while Ubisoft handles the creative work, which is the way it should be.
