Torchlight 2 still scheduled for late 2011 (barring death or illness)
34
Anticipated dungeon crawler Torchlight 2 has a minor update to its launch window, with Runic telling RunicGamesFanSite.com that the title is expected to launch during November or December ... unless "someone on the team dies." That's a far more calamitous caveat compared to what Runic told us when we checked in with the studio a couple weeks ago.
"We're still definitely on track for 2011, but have to hit all our internal milestones before we can lock in a date," Runic community maven Wonder Russell told Joystiq. "With a team this small, if one of our three programmers gets the flu, we could be screwed."
Torchlight fans should be sewing pillow suits of armor and force-feeding the devs their Flintstone vitamins, just to make sure that the $20 co-op dungeon crawler makes it out this year.

Basically "We have to beat Diablo III out the gate or we are royally boned" statement.
Which, if they do not get out before Diablo III hits, they are, in fact, royally boned.

Don't see why I get down voted when I speak the truth.
No where did I say Torchlight II would be bad, however gamers who know what Torchlight is and that there is a sequel is a far smaller pool than know what Diablo II was and what Diablo III is going to be.
To argue otherwise is just ludicrous. If they do not beat Diablo III out the door, their sales will suffer.
Gamers like you and I, who would buy both, are slim.
Their only bastion would be the console/ipad front. The PC market, which made them what they are, would get awfully cramped.

... And this comment gets upvoted?
Yo, I will play both, but Diablo III is much bigger and will draw far more attention. Torchlight II will get lost in that sea if they do not hit first. You could probably ask the developers themselves and they would say they have to beat the competition out.
I like how I say something factual, yet the "DIABLO III HAS TEH DRMS!" and that gets the praise. Dumb internet.

I just think that it's a bit money-grubbing for Activision-Blizzard to structure Diablo III like a free-2-play MMO only without the MMO and free bits while Runic is releasing Torchlight II at $20 with mod tools.
Runic is chasing my heart first and then my wallet where as Activision-Blizzard is doing it the other-way-round.

To be completely fair, playing steam games offline is a hassle.

@TheKbob I must disagree. Torchlight II's cost is likely much less to the developer than DIII, and there's more than a few Blizzard fanboys out there ticked off that they have to log on to play single player, and there is a cash shop built into the game. Due to the item-based nature of the game, it is getting very close to "pay to win". These are two very, very big no-nos for me, and I am getting very close to considering myself a former Blizzard fanboy due to that and obvious flaws with SCII's battlenet system, specifically being forced to store custom games on their server, having to pay for additional server space, as well as the lack of ability to name your games when a few maps, even blizzard-made customs, almost require it.

@Courtney I agree with you 100%. The more I see video of D3 the more I want TL2. D3 does not look all that great. Two things Blizzard is great at .... cut scenes and story. I think TL2 is going to blow D3 away from a artistic standpoint. I just love the inventory management in TL1. If TL2 has a little deeper crafting that would be really, really cool. I just love how fishing in TL1 actually means something. Fishing in WOW is the most boring thing I have ever done in a video game. Runic rocks and for $20 I hope they sell 1 million copies on day one.

Man I really wish they'd announced a firm date for this, it's a day one purchase for me. In the meantime there is Dungeon Defenders on PC now though... and that's proving very amusing.

That ominously sounds like they'll straight up murder a team mate if it looks like they won't make it.

Don't worry about release dates, just polish the game up nice and pretty and we'll be waiting patiently when it's done.
..But don't get all Half-Life Ep3 on us.

This was going to be a day one purchase for me, but by the time it comes out I'll have too many games and I'll just end up waiting on it. I'm disappointed, but I understand and I'll get it eventually.

no, which is why I said that I understand, but It doesn't make me less disappointed because I was hoping to be able to play it before some other games came out.

I want Secret Service protection for that entire team. My tax dollars pay their salaries and they should ensure the safety of Runic to make sure that game gets released as planned.

Hey if it launches in Nov or Dec great. If it does not launch until 1st qtr of 2012, not that big of a deal. Why? Because it is $20. You are all going to buy it no matter what. Even if you pick up Skyrim or get it on Jesus' birthday, you will still buy TL2. Ya know ... I just loaded TL1 on my laptop after not playing it for over a year. This time I am taking it slow and you know what? That game is freaking gorgeous. Like supermodel gorgeous less all that supermodel drama. So, go ahead and role a new character in TL1 and take a look around that world. I'm having more fun this time around because I am stopping to smell the dead. Oh, and if you are looking for a great $10 present for that family member that is impossible to buy for. Office Depot has the game on their $9.99 game shelf. You can't beat that game and that price. Runic rules.
