Angry Birds film flying forward, game downloaded 400M times

The Angry Birds movie is happening, Rovio's Andrew Stalbow told the BBC.
"We recently hired David Maisel, former Chairman of Marvel Studios who produced Iron Man, to lead our movie efforts," Stalbow said, noting that the company is working on a series of short films it will release next year. "We're building a next generation media company."
Stalbow also revealed that Angry Birds had been downloaded 400 million times, an increase of 50 million from just this time last month. Publisher Rovio is currently valued at $1.2 billion, with intentions to go public next year.

So Angry Birds is the best selling game ever?
Nintendo claimed Wii Sports was the best selling game ever, but I guess they don't count digital games.

Problem here is on many devices Angry birds is a free download with advertisement. You can't sell what's free.

@The Aquacharger True.
But, in my opinion, it should also be considered that Wii Sports was exclusively a pack-in in all territories other than Japan and is only recently being sold stand-alone in those territories. I've never thought it fair to include pack-in sales for "best selling" consideration.

They often "factor those into the price" as an excuse to do so.

I have 5 - 8 different versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Rio I've paid for MAYBE 2 of them. Everything else I just turn off wifi to avoid the ads getting in the way. So explain to me how this game is worth so much.... oh wait, are we talking theoretical "internet money"?

I don't know what caused this or why, but I really want Rovio to tank and for all the mainstream people to move on. I feel like they just keep flinging those stupid birds for more money. How long can it take for people to realize Rovio, Seasons, etc are all just the same game and Rovio has nothing other than Angry Birds?
"Oh we haz stuffed animals. T-shirts? We have those too. Movie? Lol, calm down bro, we're making it. We are Next Gen Media valued way higher than that low ball 1.2 Billion estimate after all"
I hate to sound hipster-ish, but when Angry Birds first came out and before everyone went crazy over it, I thought it was a neat game to kill wait times. However, now it seems like the money has gone to Rovio's head and I'm slowly starting to dislike them more and more. It's like some kind of annoyance at mainstream society: "Y U NO SEE ANGRY BIRD SUCKS" and at Rovio: "Calm down bro, all you have is one game"

@killerjuice Angry Birds is going to collapse on its own. People really will get tired of it. Even my most casual friends that raved over Angry Birds and downloaded all of the new versions and updates, that used to brag amongst themselves about completing level x and y... I just don't hear it anymore.
Angry Birds is killing itself faster than Guitar Hero.

This game is free to download on google chrome, Android possibly other places. Why is it news that people like free stuff? I'm sure that if Batman Arkham City was 1$ on PS3 and free on a bunch of other platforms it would hit 400M downloads. Hell, I'm sure that a lower grade console title would do the same

Ok, so I'm done commenting that this game is stupid. However, I have to wonder how many people who enjoy this game have ever thought to themselves, "Man, this would make a great movie!"

Let's think about this for one minute - 400 million downloads at $1 a pop (minus the various platforms that offered the game for free, IE the 200k HP Touchpad users). So, lets round that down to 350 million bucks.
Most companies would love that kind of revenue for a game.
My question is this - why hasn't more companies jumped on this low price point bandwagon? Think about some of the more popular Xbox Live Arcade games (or PSN Games, or Wii Ware games) - now imagine, they were at a $1 price point, affordable to everyone and their dog (assuming their dog still has that paper route). More people would purchase at the lower price point, generating more sales. You make less per purchase, but sell more. It's not guaranteed to generate more revenue - but you can be damn sure that if Angry Birds was $5 a piece, it would not be downloaded 400 million times.
One of the major platforms should try this experiment. Release a key game at such a ridiculously low price and just see what happens.

@Cirrus i agree, what the fk is the big deal over angry birds. when u boil it down all its just a simple 2d game, about a slingshot. rovio needs to get over themselves.

All the hate Angry Birds receives never ceases to amaze me. No it's not a unique concept or a revolution but I can respect it for what it is... an enjoyable time waster. And at least Rovio prices the game accordingly ($1 or free) and then provides ongoing FREE updates and new levels. It's not like they are nickle and diming their customers like so many others in the gaming business do.

I don't hate the game, it's just a decent physics game.
But it should not be the greatest iPhone game of all time.
It shouldn't have a clothing line. Rovio thinks they are the biggest company in the industry and see themselves as grand-masters of gaming.
It's just a decent physics game.
