@Nolan North Since Bowser Jr. is considered his own separate character and the eighth child of Bowser, would there be Bowser, Baby Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Baby Bowser Jr.? :B

Well.. not really. That's the resolution of the 3DS' screen. It's just more pronounced when the image is embiggened.

@eilegz It's a badly scaled image and I'm not sure if it's because Joystiq mishandled the screenshots or if that's just the way it comes in the presskit.

Those six polygon hexagonal tires are horrible. 1st gen PSP had better graphics than this. Nintendo failed hard with this generation. And graphics DO matter. If they don't, why shouls we even upgrade? I'll just keep playing a gamecube or n64 version of Mario Kart

First of all, the tires are Octagons (8 sides), which when they're moving at the speed they do in the game, you don't even notice.

Second of all, Mario Kart 7 runs at 60 FPS, offline, online, 3D, 3D online, etc. In order to do that, it's best to be efficient with your models, environments, and effects usage.

If the average person can't tell the difference between an 8 sided polygon and a 16 sided polygon when it's rotating at 60 miles per hour and while maneuvering the course at 60 FPS, I think they'll manage.

3DS is capable of looking better than the PSP, and it has in a few instances already (first year of it's life). It just depends on the game and how talented the developers are.

I made a mistake as I didn't notice Shy Guy's kart has 6 sided wheels, but if Mario Kart DS was any indicator, Shy Guy is probably a download racer, meaning he is probably a smaller amount of data for the download play.

It's not like they need too many new Mario Kart characters, though. I know I was pretty happy with MK64's.

Although I suppose fans of Green Koopa would disagree with me, there. But then, I know I'll always be satitated, myself, because I always play Luigi. Always.

@Shadow Hog Yikes... somebody didn't beat Mario Kart Wii.

SPOILERS: Luigi dies during the last chapter when he activates the Megalith to save everyone else's life. Really tragic. But I'm sure they'll bring him back for the sequels somehow.

Actually, if you grind enough first places to unlock the Rainbow Road cup, which contains every prior Rainbow Road up to that point (yes, it's the only cup to have five courses in it), and place first in that, you get a 1Up mushroom which can be used immediately after that cutscene to keep Luigi alive. I'm surprised you didn't know that!

You have to do it BEFORE the cutscene, though, or else you get the bad ending. Succeed, though, and you unlock the Inverse Mirror Mode, which is like Mirror Mode except everything is upside-down. Then you get to fight Count Dracula and get the real ending. It's quite touching.

Lakitu is cool, but Metal Mario's as pointless as Dry Bowser.

Also, would it be too much for them to include characters from spinoff series like Donkey Kong Country or WarioWare?

I'm not seeing the point of this game, they already released a portable Mario Kart with online that has pretty much these graphics. Are they honestly expecting streetpass to make people give a poop?

If so you can count my poop as not given. Anyone need some poop?

The point: to have fun racing against friends / anonymous people in the realm of Mario Kart. This involves the use of various items such as the red shell, green shell, and the dastardly blue shell.
There are eight racers who all start at the same checkered line. After three laps the positions and times of the racers are recorded and points are awarded based on your position.
This goes on for a set number of races (depending on the mode). Generally it involves four races and then the points are tallied and the winner is determined.

No Nintendo does things right.

Masses of online servers to handle games like this, yet, somehow, magically, I can't even fathom how this is possible... they still maintain those EVEN WITH a large piracy and second hand market.

I honestly don't know how Nintendo can do it.

Unless. Now bear with me on this... unless the other publishers are just. I don't know if I can say this.
Are the other publishers perhaps being... greedy?

DS Courses are amazing, the DS online was terrible. You have to snake the races to win these.

Wii courses are amazing, and the Wii online is mostly solid, except for the hackers.

I wish they'd keep the Miis out of it. Looks wrong and breaks the 'world'. And yes, I do think keep things like that intact is important. You wouldn't want an Xbox avatar to appear and start running around Arkham City, so why can a Mii drive a kart? Are Mii's canonical Mario people now? And what kind of a person would rather play with their stupid looking Mii than a real Nintendo character?

I love Mario Kart. I like my 3DS. I enjoy being downvoted by touchy fanboys.

So I'll say this.

Even though I'm excited... is there really any excuse for the visuals to looks like that, man? Whatever happened to the 3DS being powerful? I mean, I think by now we all know that's not really the case but damn, this reminds me of what Mario Kart DS would look like if Grezzo squeeeeeeezed out another remake.

And games at the beginning of the system's life are supposed to have the highest top notch graphics? usually that comes at the end of the console's life cycle (historically speaking).

Well said, a lot of the backgrounds are like paper walls. Mariokart is NOT known for top notch graphics.

That screenshot might not be the best, but others don't look fantastic either - and yes there is an excuse, according to the original post: 60fps. Most of the games you see on 3DS that look really great are running at 30fps (and without 8 simultaneous players online, either).

If the game runs at 60fps, the graphics have to be literally half as good. For a racing game, that's probably an appropriate tradeoff.

Not exactly the stellar news I was hoping for to convince me of a purchase.

I'm still skeptical - with all the "snaking" in Mario Kart DS - I'm not sure if I can stomach another online Mario experience.

And in terms of "characters" - the Mario universe is so vast, I'm surprised characters like the Koopa Kids, Birdo, Wart, and that cute green guy that spits black balls out haven't yet been included. And why not open up the race to a few other Nintendo franchise favourites - I'm pretty sure Captain Olimar and his Pikmin pit crew would fit in just fine.

you dont have to vomit. no ones making you snake. you dont even have to accelerate if you dont want to. however if you want to win you might want to cut corners and mini boost as often as possible.
