The newly announced Mists of Pandaria expansion for Blizzard's World of Warcraft finally brings the long-awaited Pandaren race to the fantasy world of Azeroth, and while many players have been waiting to see pandas officially implemented into the game, no one, perhaps, has been waiting longer than Samwise Didier. Blizzard's longtime art director originally created the race in his own art, and up until this release, they existed only in bits and pieces of legends inside the games, as little in-jokes or secrets.
"It's very personal to me," Didier tells us at BlizzCon this week. "It all started with a picture done for Christmas after the birth of my daughter." Since that first piece of concept art, the Pandaren have always been a fan favorite race (combining a heady mix of panda humanoids, Eastern-style religions and mythology, and even beer brewing monks), and while Didier is quick to point out that lots of people are working on Mists of Pandaria, he's thrilled to see his personal creation come to virtual life. "I'm not trying to take away" credit for the expansion, he says, quickly acknowledging all of the creative folks at Blizzard, "however many it takes to make a game. But it's nice to know that some goofy thought in my head, done for that reason, for my kid, turned into this."
Does the portrayal live up to what Didier envisioned? "Yeah, and then some," he says. "There was only a few Pandaren pictures, and most of them were of Chen [Stormstout], a big fat sweaty heavy, beer-drinking Pandaren. Well that's not the entire society. He's sort of the anomaly. He likes to go to the outside world. So what do the normal Pandarens do, what is their normal culture like? A lot of sweat went into designing that."
But Didier does say that whenever the expansion finally arrives, and the race long hidden in Warcraft's shadows finally gets their time in the spotlight, he'll be proud they're there. "It was one of the last things that I really wanted to see in World of Warcraft, which is Warcraft in general," he says, after having worked on some of the most iconic designs in Blizzard's legendary game franchises. "Now I can almost say, well, I think I've done good with Warcraft -- they're finally in."

It's strange how they went from the world-shattering, explosive epic style in Cataclysm to the peaceful, relaxed tone they're giving off with Mists of Pandaria. It feels like WoW is going into retirement.
But then I suppose it would have been nearly impossible to top Cataclysm. I'm kinda tempted to sign up again for a couple of months just to experience the new setting and any story, but I'm mostly done with WoW, and so are millions of other people...

Pandaren don't belong in Warcraft lore. Even the Draenei, that were retconned into existence, have more justification to exist within Warcraft. How they even made it past existing as a joke is beyond me.

@Ceridith Native American talking cows, space goats from out of nowhere, and werewolves are ok, but badass monk pandas aren't?

@blackangel209 And before anyone brings it up, because they will, Pandaren existed BEFORE Kung Fu Panda.

False. Dreamworks announced Kung Fu Panda development in October 2004 and the first mention of Panderans was an April Fools joke in 2005.

Not to mention the bison-people, walrus-people, wolverine-people, and numerous types of fish-people that have long existed in the game.
People must play these games with blinders on to find Pandaren surprising.

Was this sarcasm sir ? I would invite you to examine very closely the image used in this very blog post. Notice how it's one of Samwises ? Do you notice the date on it.
2003. Like all the other drawings of Panda warrior's of Samwise that I can find.
Artists sometimes sign their drawings after they complete them but they don't usually use a previous years date to do so.

From werewolves to talking pandas?
Posted: Oct 22nd 2011 2:55AM Suzaku said
@Dhexodus Technically, talking pandas predate worgen.
There was a Pandaren hero unit in WC3:TFT who helped Rexxar during the Orc campaign.
Worgen didn't appear in Warcraft until WoW, and before they became playable they had about as much lore as gnolls and kobolds.
Draenei were only in WC3:TFT as freakish mutants lead by Akama, who joined Illidan for a couple missions.
Gnomes weren't even really in the lore at all before WoW. There were two seige weapons in WC2 built by gnomes, and that was all the story they had.
Pandaren already have more than them combined.

Mm, no. The Worgen had quite a decent history. The Staff of Elune story, plus the mage who worked on the worgen cure had been mentioned previously as having lacked the funding to work on a proper cure.
No lore before WoW, but still lore before playable. Much more than Kobolds or Gnolls

WoW is in a declining state. I stop playing when firelands came out should of when rehash troll dungeons and easy epics did but I try to have hope and blizzard basicly turn around and did the opposite of what they said they were going to do. plus I've saved a lot of money from not having to pay a sub every month went back to guild wars to complete some HoM stuff that will be carried over to guild wars2

i used to be a huge Blizzard fan, but never jumped on the WoW bandwagon. glad i haven't devoted hours upon hours of my life to this phenomenon like some people have. i checked out a free trial a while ago and could easily see how people get stuck playing it for hours on end, but after my trial was up i decided that was it. i just couldn't do it.
now, seeing all this panda nonsense is actually pretty hilarious. pandas (or "pandaren") walking upright from a place called "pandaria"? where's the creativity in that? in a world full of orcs, elves, trolls and dragons and shit, they couldn't think of something, anything, better than bipedal, kung-fu pandas? /cool story bro

@Liquidfingers You're obviously not familiar with the Warcraft universe. Point in fact, the world of Azeroth is populated by literally dozens of races that are essentially anthropomorphic animals. Even things most people wouldn't think of, like hyenas, are the basis for one of WoW's races. Part of the setting of the game seems to be that in this world, every animal has some evolved to intelligent race. It would be bizarre for pandas to not have any such race when bears, wolves, cats, cows, hyenas, rats, etc. etc. do.

It's always so obvious when someone's first MMO was WoW. They think Blizzard's original. Here's a hint: They're not.
Even Warcraft came about when they failed to acquire the Warhammer license. They basically just stole it and changed some of the names around. You know, the same thing they sue like crazy over now.
The only thing original in WoW are the sheer amount of dumbasses playing it.

i liked warcraft 3, but warcraft 2 will always hold a special place in my heart...not the warcraft where uber nerds go to get married and Korean kids die in internet cafes due to over-indulgence.
