Gaikai delivering FIFA 12 demo through YouTube (Or: The future cometh!)
21
Remember when OnLive first debuted, and we were violently pulled from our provincial timescape and thrust into a future which, while notably devoid of flying cars and jetpacks, did have streaming video games? Well, hold onto your butts because the internet done did it again.
Streaming service Gaikai has always had a different business model than OnLive; instead of a direct-to-consumer platform, Gaikai wants to get you into a demo as effortlessly as possible. If you like what you play, the "Order Now" button is happy to connect you to a retailer. As a part of that mandate, Gaikai founder Dave Perry was "excited!" to announce that "Gaikai is the first ever to power 3D Games (FIFA 12) on YouTube." That would be the same YouTube that streams a bajillion videos of whatever to people every day.
If you follow this link and click on the "PLAY THE DEMO" banner above the video, you can see what all the fuss is about for yourself. When you're done, take a few minutes to remind yourself it's still 2011, and you weren't controlling the game with a bioport installed on your spine. The future is still a long ways out.

Well, apparently one thing remote gaming isn't going to fix is load times.

@spin cycle I can't speak for gaikai but OnLive games load in under 4 seconds usually. Much faster than loading it locally whether it's on PC or console.

Why do I think xbox 720 / PS4 will be completely VR?...

Didn't see what I was supposed to click until I opted out of Cosmic Panda. Thank goodness I did. Terrible terrible interface. I forgot YouTube used to be comfortable.

@Gooblechev Came here to say this. ICS Livestream didn't work either.

Seems like this might be an US-only thing.
No "play demo"-banner for me, and I saw some UK chaps commenting the EAsports youtube-channel saying the same thing.

You're not missing much, I've been in this queue for an hour now, and still have the "Just a moment, there are 2 people ahead of you", started at 14 people.

Worked almost instantly for me. When this technology is perfected, there will be no Xbox 1080 or Playstation 5. It's interesting to see where the industry is starting to go.

I virtually stood in a virtual line.

Very cool. However, i think there are far to many gamers in the world still willing to buy a console for this service (as well as OnLive) to bring an end to traditional hardware platforms anytime soon. However, i could totally see MS (or Sony) attempting to buy OnLive and incorporate it into its XBL service. All opinion of course.

@RedgeHammer Neither gaikai n or OnLive expect you to give up consoles, in fact gaikai depends on you owning a console or gaming PC, they would have no business if you didn't. OnLive makes money even if you only use them for demoing, then buy the game for a console.
Personally if the game is available for OnLive I'd rather buy it there, for one thing I'd probably get it cheaper, heck I just bought Deus Ex Augmented Edition for 90 cents.

I will laugh if people demo a game via gaikai, then go to OnLive to buy it.

Anyone compare the latency to OnLive? Either its me or this demo ran a lot better than what I've tried with OnLive. (FYI I'm using Time Warner Cable/Road Runner in Rochester, NY.)
