Holodesk: More Kinect magic from Microsoft Research
25
There are a lot of conspiracy theorists at Joystiq that attribute the human race's breathtakingly rapid technological advancement to ancient aliens, claiming that world-changing inventions like polymers, optical media and the Internet have all been reverse engineered from downed extraterrestrial spacecraft.
In actuality, very few modern conveniences can trace their roots back to ancient aliens; most mind-bending breakthroughs come from abstract corporate think-tanks like Microsoft Research. The lab that previously utilized a Kinect to create real-time 3D models has now developed an interactive, holographic 3D environment called Holodesk.
As is demonstrated in the (strangely silent) proof of concept video above, Holodesk uses a Kinect, projector and beam splitter to create interactive holograms. In a nutshell, the Kinect watches your hands and face, tracking their movements and projecting 3D shapes onto a semi-transparent surface above your hands, tricking the eye into thinking the shapes and your hand exist on the same plane. The interface is still fairly rough, graphically speaking, but the technology itself is so solid, we're hoping it'll eventually lead to a Kinect sequel to Time Traveler.

@wunwunx I guess you missed the 'The interface is still fairly rough' part of the article, it needs a lot of work before it can be made available for public consumption, we won't see this for many many years I expect.

The more and more I use the Kinect, the more I see it's potential outside of gaming. I've played my fair share of games like Dance Central, or Kinect Sports, and love the gameplay behind Child of Eden and The Gunstringer.
I think there's room for games, but I'd like to see Microsoft market it more for Windows based application. I'm excited to see what extra functionality the actual SDK will support when it's released.

If they used more advanced technology than the kinect, then they could probably have a non-laggy and better toy for the office

It's always nice to see the fruits of experimentation. While it may be fairly rough now, who knows? In ten years, it could be the basis for far better interfaces and what not in products that go well beyond their intent. If nothing else, seeing this type of thing will inspire those who want to take the tech a step further still.
Have to admit, no matter the capability of the result, the company does try and aim high. Gotta respect that.

Begone foul troll. We need not have every discussion about system vs system technology.

well good for them. hopefully they don't ship the system with a hefty $600 price tag this time and maybe i will actually consider buying one at launch instead of waiting for price drops. but, to be honest, i've never been a big fan of Sony, always rooted more for the underdog (but i guess they are the underdog this gen). i'm definitely not "sonyforlife", that's for sure....

Most video game devs seem to be using the Kinect wrong. This is an example of proper use of this device. Another example would be minecraft
