Diablo 3 being polished up, no release date yet
29
The build of Diablo 3 being shown at BlizzCon 2011 last week did have a few polish updates, but generally it was the same content previously available in the beta, which we've covered thoroughly so far. Diablo 3's Technical Director Wyatt Chang agreed while chatting with me last week that the game is basically content complete, but the polish phase is far from over. "Content complete for us usually means things like voice recording, art, assets are in place, but it doesn't mean that things like the tuning, balance, and game systems are in place."
The team is still working hard on some of the core concepts, however -- one issue that's come up lately is whether players can switch skills on the fly or not. In the beta, says Cheng, "you can play with your skill window open, and you can switch skills in the middle of the fight, which has some upsides and it's very cool in one regard, but on the whole, I think it's sort of a more negative experience, and a lot of people in the community have agreed." Just recently, the team was dealing with things like "how many Pages of Training you can have in one stack," so they are starting to dive into the nitty gritty of how the game will work. The Rune system hasn't been seen in the beta at all, but Cheng says that "they're being tested extensively internally." Runes just didn't appear in the early part of the game where the beta is set, but Cheng promises that they "are still as crazy and diverse as ever." The real-money market isn't going through testing, but the team is working on a few design tweaks for it, including going "through lots of efforts to ensure that gold will actually be a real and valuable commodity, which is really required in order for the auction house to function."
Blizzard continues to hedge its bets on a possible Diablo 3 release date, unfortunately -- there wasn't one mentioned at the conference at all. But it sounds like development on the game, while still very busy, is at least starting to nail down a few of the finer points.

Meanwhile, Bobby Kotick is polishing something else as he thinks about how much money the real-money auctions are going to bring him.

The profit they'll get from the RMAH will be minimal. Server maintenance wipes the listing or transaction fees out. The only part they're going to profit off of is when people cash out which takes a percentage. In any case the collective money made by people will massively outweigh the money blizzard makes off the RMAH.

I'd be interested in you proving your assertion that Blizzard isn't going to make a metric sh*t-ton of money off the RMT market. "Server maintenance" isn't going to make a noticeable dent in the money they make. If it was going to they wouldn't have bothered with the RMT aspect. It's too much work setting up a secure monetary transaction system that shoehorns into the game for a negligible profit.
Remember; this is Blizzard. They don't do anything half-assed. From story to art direction to music to polish. What makes you think they're gonna go half-assed into the RMT arena? RMT is stupid profitable and Blizzard wants a chunk of that sweet cash. Blizzard, based on world-wide popularity and name recognition alone has the possibility to own (or merely dominate) the RMT market.
Think about what Valve did with Steam. Now think of Blizzard doing that with RMT. That's what I think is going to happen.
Server fees. Lawlz.

Ah... ha... hahahaHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
No seriously, they take their time and do what they intend to do. Whether or not their intentions are half-assed or not is a different question entirely.

Not as much as you'd think for two reasons:
1. Every player gets a number of free postings every week (Blizzard doesn't profit from them)
2. It's a fairly low, fixed fee per sale, not a percentage.

@Calen
Thanks for the vid lots of good info in there
@Kresh
They have said that the price would be minimal, namely cause they want people to use the service and what I have heard is you will have a certain number of free transactions a week or something.

I can't say with any certainty Blizz will or won't make a ton of money (all I know is that the RMAH with implemented as a cool feature, not as a way to make money, this is straight from Jay Wilson). All I know for a fact is that the vast majority of money being made on the RMAH with be by the players collectively.

Hopefully this means that January 17th date is correct. I'd love some Diablo 3 at the beginning of the year.

If not for the Auction House and Activision's greed, the game would have been out a long time ago.

Well I called the 2012 release date back when I saw the first 2008 video. So to keep the streak alive, I am going to say March 2012 - May 2012. Let's see if I'm right.
Nightmare Scenario: Diablo 3 and Mass Effect 3 come out on the same day. Head explodes.

This is what I believe the announcement for this game will be:
Blizzard- "The release for Diablo III will be *drum roll*.....
YESTERDAY!! Run out to your store and grab it now"
*Consumer Stampede will ensue*

It is being worked on more because the RMAH is having issues with the Asian government. So they are using the extra time to somehow create something new so that we can get another delay, AGAIN....

I am sorry but, I completely disagree with how long it takes Blizzard take a game. I have play games that tak a half to a quarter the time and are evey bit as good a Blizzard game.

By the time this game comes along, everybody except the obligatory blind fanboys will have already gotten their Diablo fix from Torchlight 2 and won't want to put up with Blizzardvision's bullshit.

I don't really understand the hype. Diablo 2 was a desperately boring, repetitive game. No fun after 5 minutes...
Is there something about Diablo 3 that should interest gamers that want to do more than mash a button and run around for hours on end picking up small icons representing rubbish?
I know I'm sounding argumentative, but I'm genuinely asking the question - I'm interested to know what the appeal of this game is. Perhaps I'm missing something...

i played wow when it came out for about 5yrs, i played that game way too much, got high warlord, did all the raids and love pwning noobs. that was fun for me even though it was the same thing over and over again but i quit because i just got sick of playing it because you had to invest way too much time to get anywhere.
the point is every game is repetitive and when broken down, yea you're literally running around in dungeons virtual icons. yay. but what makes the games worth while are the communities that develop from them. which is why oblivion just doesn't have the luster that wow had.

I, like most im sure, have looked forward to D3 for years and have only been discouraged by the setback release dates. but now i am starting to really lose interest. something i have noticed about the gameplay just from watching the reviews and walkthroughs, is this game looks all too familiar.
it's wow revisited. in fact, it looks like they took all the best aspects from wow classes and incorporated them for the equivalent classes in D3. or am i just imagining this?
i realy hope it's not too much like wow because i quit that game many years ago and i am certainly not interested in playing another wow archetype.
