Report: GTA V to be set in Los Angeles, will feature multiple playable characters

Citing anonymous sources "familiar with the game," Kotaku reports that Grand Theft Auto V will take place in a Rockstarified version of Los Angeles, one of the cities mocked up in an earlier installment in the franchise, San Andreas. We suppose the locale makes sense -- wouldn't adapting it be as easy as taking all their assets from L.A. Noire, then applying 75 years of wear, tear and technological progress to the structures therein?

The source also claims that more than one character will be playable during Five's campaign, which similarly makes sense, considering the extra protagonists which appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV's expansions. We've contacted Rockstar, and are encasing ourselves in suspended animation for the next week or so, shortening the amount of time between us and the game's debut trailer on November 2.

I think this is more of a "Hey, people are talking about this third Saints Row game. Let's slap some clip art on our logo to remind people we are here."

It's obvious they were going to make another one but they just couldn't let the underdog game have allllll the spotlight.

You can't deny this tease is just a little too close to SR3's release. I'd let them have it if they teased it 2 months ago or a month from now. I'd even let them have it if they included a trailer instead of the tease yesterday.

But to tease 3 weeks before the leading competing game's release is suspect.

Rockstar is pretty awesome, but I hate teases like this. Yes, I'm a sucker and I'll be watching the teaser the first chance I get and trying to glean as much information as possible -- it's just too bad I'm such a sucker for the hype.

I hope it's on a new engine. Do you guys think it will be set in modern times? Personally, I want the 90's again like San Andreas. Or even the 70's would be pretty cool.

Unfortunately, you're probably right about that. The only reason I say unfortunately is because with all these rumors about the next Xbox being developed I would hope this would be on next gen consoles. I mean, it's only natural seeing as it's a "true" sequel. Just as GTA IV was to III and so on.

This generation really is lasting too long.

Hell! As long as they don't shove down our throats another failure of a relationship sim like they did in GTA4 (which promptly killed me ever playing the game again), I don't care if it's during the stone age!

I understand that from a graphical point of view but honestly let these consoles have their ten-year life cycles as most people (like myself) probably cannot afford PS4, Xbox 720 or Wii U yet.

Sounds like a somewhat new direction for the series. Very interesting!

I too was just thinking the other day that I hope the next GTA game is set in Miami, like Vice City was based on and make it modernized.

@Dawg605 The next Vice City could be amazing if they make it more like San Andreas with a whole state. The Everglades, the Keys, Disney World...

Apart from that one strip along the beach I thought Miami was a terrible choice for a game to be set in. It was flat, straight, and boring. The 80's theme made Vice City, the city environment itself was crap.

Disagree completely. All due respect to San Andreas (It's fantastic), Vice City is my favorite GTA. Admittedly I have a soft spot for the 80's.

I don't believe they'll actually call it LA. For this to work, GTA V would have to take place outside of the existing GTA universe, so I'm pretty sure it will still be called Los Santos. After all, they were still referencing Vinewood and other San Andreas cities in GTA IV.

I'd like to see them branch out and try a new city, but doing L.A. again is great. Though I will miss NYC :'(

@DethLocke I don't particularly like black thug culture either or rap for that matter. It's just not that interesting to me after playing through San Andreas 3 times. Hopefully that aspect won't feature prominently in this game.

Following all that work they did on L.A. Noire's accurate recreation of LA? You'd better believe that's going to hit a GTA game.

Cole Phelps will be a playable as a 90 yr. old detective.

@Yongousen Dan Houser himself has stated that the GTA series is primarily about parodying American crime/media.

I really want Vice City. That is the beat in my opinion, and I would love to see what they could do with it.

@ItsameMatt03 I would even buy a remake of Vice City with the new engine. All the music in lossless would be incredible.
