Nintendo really shouldn't bring out our allow 3rd parties to bring out hardware hugely modifies the console like this.

I like Nintendo and all but I feel the 3ds has been a huge let-down. While the 3d screen doesn't give me headaches i recently saw my friends Evo 3d phone and the 3d is sooo much better than the 3ds's. I feel they really rushed the 3ds out before it should have been brought out. A handful of games(mostly remakes or ports) poorly done hardware which will get replaced by a far superior version in less than a year.

The jokes on me, and I'm not laughing.

That slide pad is the weirdest, and perhaps the stupidest, "mainstream" game peripheral I've seen in the last five years. So, it appears that this makes your portable gaming system significantly less portable, while at the same time won't be supported by most games, or at least, they won't fully capitalize on it. Devs wouldn't want to make a game that NEEDS it, and half-baked support probably won't be too much fun.

If it costs more than $10, I'd skip. $5 would be my preferred price.

Well, I got bad news for you, son. The Japanese price for it is equivalent to about $20.

Also, it's still less narrow than a Vita, apparently.

Yes but the Japanese always pay a higher price then we do. So we know at most it'd be $20. Perhaps it'd be $15 here.

This is a means to allow the current 3DS owners to play games that will require two sticks. I'd be very surprised if the next version of the 3DS didn't have two analog sticks. Rather than leaving early adopters in the dust, they'll allow them to buy the peripheral and play the newer games. It reminds me of the Sega genesis controller. The proper way to play street fighter was to get the 6-button controller. It wasn't required, but made a huge difference in how the game was played. After that, a bunch of other games used it, too, and it became kind of a new norm.

I was not advocating (or dissing) the Vita. I haven't seen the Vita in person. If the Vita is that big, it will have its own burden to bear (literally). That said, bulk can be well distributed or poorly distributed. Asymmetry often doesn't pocket well.

Wait... doesn't even Monster Hunter NOT need it?
Isn't it just ENCOURAGED for players to use it? ... as far as I can tell, this peripheral is exactly like the Classic Controller Pro: only made Monster Hunter Tri comfortable by removing "hold one button then press another" controls, but still unnecessary.

...even has Pro at the end of it.

You know, the size is one thing, the layout is another. But what I really can't understand at all, is that even if this was the best they could produce, why couldn't they at least make it the same finish as the 3DS. Having it matte plastic just goes that one extra step to making the whole thing feel like a cheap, last minute "oops".

I think the 3DS is great. I love the 3D effect. I am excited for upcoming games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, RE: Revelations, and Fire Emblem. I think the system has a lot of potential. But that being said, what the f*ck are you doing, Nintendo? It seemed like you guys used to have a plan. I didn't always love said plan, but it sure seemed like you knew what you were doing. Now ... not so much. Stop apologizing and compromising. Just release some goddamn games. Give in to Operation Rainfall. And make a new IP that kicks ass and makes other hardcore games look like a joke. As for the circle pad pro, either shit or get off the pot. I'll buy a redesign before I buy this.

I completely agree. I was very happy with my 3DS. The games were fairly good looking (Some like DOA were VERY good looking), and it was what it was. A simple successor to the DS, and I was happy with that. Could I have used some more games and some good online functions? Sure. But for what it was, and the cheap price I got it for, I couldn't really complain.

But this screams to me that they have completely fallen off their rockers. This shows a complete lack of confidence in their hardware design, and all it does is made owners of this look ridiculous and segregate the owners into people who own it vs those who don't. That's something you never want to do. It didn't work when Sony made the Move, and it didn't work when Nintendo made the Wii Motion Plus. You can't have added hardware that's required to play games without people (who don't read sites like this) being extremely confused and ticked off.

I donno, I don't get a good vibe from them this time around. I've bought every Nintendo handheld and been happy with them, but I just don't like this at all. If it turns around, I'll buy it again, but for now I'm glad I got most of my money back from selling the thing.

So because Nintendo releases a single, 100% OPTIONAL, peripheral, they've lost their minds? Also, you'd rather drop another $170 than the $20 or so, at best?

Also, they've been bringing out new IPs, you already mentioned the three big ones with Operation Rainfall. Nintendo owns Monolith Soft and they worked with Mistwalker and Ganbarion to create The Last Story and Pandora's Tower for them. NoA just hasn't been localizing them for whatever insane reason that Reggie has concoted.

@Shockwave

This is completely optional, even the game its being hyped with doesn't require it, in fact it has an amazing amount of customization in its controls and uses the bottom screen extremely well.

If they're making new IPs that their biggest f*cking market can't play, then you don't have a point there, bucko. And yes, I'd pay $150 more for a 3DS Complete. It's not just this thing though, it's everything. The premature launch, the price cut, Iwata writing handwritten apologies to every child in the world, etc.
I want the Big N to be bolder and to take risks somewhere other than the gameplay department. I want them to ignore what their competitors are doing, a move that always pays off for them. We don't want a repeat of the GameCube, do we? I mean, sure, some great first-party games, but nothing that pushed the envelope or drove the market like the NES, Gameboy, SNES, Gameboy Advance, N64, DS, or Wii did.
Where is all the confidence that the Wii launched with? Where's the "We'll tell you what fun is" hardline approach?
Do you really think that the first year of the 3DS was exceptionally planned out?

Like I said, Reggie has been an asshat when it comes to localization. That is not a fault of Nintendo, who has been giving us these great games, that is a fault of Reggie. The games do exist so you can't just cut them out, and I can say first hand that Xenoblade is an amazing game.

As for the 3DS, I can't tell if it was a blessing in disguise or just a bad launch. Pretty much since the Wii came out we've had to deal with getting the short end of the stick because "Third party games don't sell" or "We can't compete with Nintendo's first party offerings". So Nintendo let the third parties have the launch of the 3DS, Nintendo could've easily had some good titles ready to go. The third parties failed tremendously, and this time with no one to blame but themselves. E3 and TGS showed me, though, that they definitely have their shit together with a nice third party offering, including two games in one of the biggest franchises in Japan, and a lot of first party content that is bound to stretch well into next year.

It's actually pretty funny to see two Nintendo fanboys bicker with each other. I also loved your disclaimer before you told it like it was.

"I think the 3DS is great. I love the 3D effect. I am excited for upcoming games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, RE: Revelations, and Fire Emblem. I think the system has a lot of potential."

It's like so funny. Before you could kind of give them any shit you first had to go out of your way to let it be known how much you love the 3DS.

LOL ... just made me laugh bro. Good times.

It's called "having a stance against but not assuring that you're not a hateboy".

There are arguments between differing fanboys, arguments between a fan and a neutral, a neutral and a neutral, a troll and everyone else, and then there are arguments where you're going against a person who obviously hates all products that come from something... a hateboy, in that regard.
Arguing against hateboys is like arguing against a wall: They're not there to listen to you, they're not there to make any kind of conversation, they just shout what they want and make no attempt of civil understanding.

To state you're not a hateboy or neutral by actually showing you are a fan of a system shows that you're actually "being reasonable" (as neutrals are often misinformed, and hateboys are... hateboys).

Oh, and yes, I'm also aware that a fanboy can also be in deep denial, no mistaking that.

At this point there's no evidence that Nintendo has no idea what they're doing. You can point at the add-on slide pad as an example, but that's similar to Christian science when they point at one example of fossil mis-dating due to peculiar erosion to disprove all of evolution: it's a single example that hardly has much backing towards it.

Realize that this slide pad had been announced around the same time Monster Hunter was going to the 3DS - make that correlation with how the Classic Controller Pro was announced with Monster Hunter Tri, and you've got yourself a counter-argument against "Nintendo's flip-flopping!" or "Nintendo's dumb"...

There's no solid evidence that Nintendo has no idea what they're doing, especially considering that almost all of their meets and discussions with 3rd parties is confidential - but to your addition, there's no solid point that they DO know what they're doing.
Absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence...

The only proof we'll have at the end is if Nintendo themselves says they made a mistake (much like they did with their price rise then price drop... which they had announced the price hike before it even released, so it wasn't as if anyone was fooled).

Other than that, we'll wait for sales numbers and public reception over the years. Investor reactions means little, as investors will change often the moment they see ANY signs of bad news... and they've all made horrible mistakes through this reaction (Wii).

Look at the PSP, many say the system failed due to lack of software in its beginning, and despite it being a run-on joke: people were proven wrong, the PSP did pick up in software and sales --- obviously not as high as the DS, but that's not a fair comparison... the DS was a beast, it couldn't help it.

I just had a scary realization.
This might well be Nintendo's take on DLC. Instead of selling us half a game for full price and then sell us the rest in small chunks after a while, they try it with hardware!
Same thing with the WIi motion plus.
Of course you don't need the DLC/attachment for the game/system, but you're not getting the full experience without it.

Although I didn't get much sleep lately and this might just be the paranoia kicking in.

@sparkster Well except the wii motion plus came years after the system was first released, after the tech was developed enough to become affordable. It wasn't a launch feature because it couldn't have been. Which is like the opposite of most DLC, which is often planned before release of the game (and, knowing corporations, I'm pretty sure it's often simply taken out of the main game).

I'll agree that the slide pad thing is a bit closer to what you're talking about (dual analogue could've been a launch feature), but even then it doesn't seem like something that was planned, but more like a response to devs asking for it, afterwards.

Whenever there is an article about the addon, which is optional, everyone completely blows it out of proportion. The 3DS has had a somewhat slow start, but then again so did the DS. If we had the games we wanted now, everyone wouldn't be bitching. I'll be in line for one because I want it, not because the 3DS needs it. The 3DS doesn't need 2 circle pads.

It's pretty obvious Nintendo really didn't have any kind of a plan when it came to the 3DS design or games. The thing should have had two sticks from the jump and they should have released some non shitty new games for it. By new I mean non remakes of old games. Zelda & SF are great but there is still not a single piece of must have software on the system.
