Maybe if they had made the 3DS region-free, they could have repackaged and sold some of the US systems domestically. Probably not.

But I'll tell you what.

I didn't buy one because 3DS is region-locked, not because of games. They decided to give a big middle-finger to importers like myself for whom the currency conversion rate is in their favor.

There has been a Nintendo console in my home since 1987. I shudder the thought that they would go out of business. I was incredibly sad when Sega got out of the game, I thought the Dreamcast was brilliant and highly underrated.

Long live Nintendo, even if I don't play a whole heck of a lot of Nintendo games these days.

How the hell did that happen? What happened to the millions they got from the Wii and DS? Years and years of record profits and now it's (almost) gone?

Did they waste it all on golden hot tubs or something?

The only Nintendo product I've ever owned was a gameboy advance, was a PS1 player, then PS2, and then PS3/360/PC after that. But hopefully they don't go under - that'll be a lot of people left jobeless and I wouldn't want to wish that on anybody.

Hopefully the WiiU finds its own niche so it's considered a success for them.

It was pretty stupid of Nintendo to release a system with virtually NO games for it (and no, PORTS dont count).

Its common sense. It doesnt take a business giant to understand this, considering even college students thats NOT studying business related fields can understand it.

Games are what sells the systems, not how many pixels youcan fit on a screen per second.

what i find amusing is that amongst all this schadenfreude and desperate nintendo fanboy spin, no one has asked the really interesting question.

how exactly does a hardware company with an install base of, like, a half the planet manage to post nearly a billion dollar loss? that seems impossible to me.

Nintendo could have catered to the Core while courting the Casual. They failed to do so. They abandoned their Core audience in the pursuit of shovel ware and the casual market. Well, the casual audience will always move on to something else. They could care less about Nintendo. They have no misplaced loyalty for a billion dollar corporate giant. Nintendo is still showing signs of delusion and apparently has no desire to make their core fans happy. They never listen to such people. They refuse to bring core games to America that are already localized. And the Wii U...the Wii U. Reggie wouldn't not answer a single question a Core fan wanted a answer to. He only wanted to talk about the controller. Proving they are still ignorant to the fact that the casual audience they once had an affair with has found another lover. That lover is the very sexy and seductive Apple. They could have came out with a HD powerful console with no gimmicks and fell back k their iconic franchise to rekindle a relationship with the Core gamers. But this is Nintendo. Nintendo never does want gamers want them to do. We will see them at the unemployment office soon.

Without question, the best article I've ever read on Joystiq. They couldn't have hit the nail on the head harder if they hit it with a sledgehammer.

Quite frankly, I don't see how Nintendo will make it through another year without going the way of Sega. In fact, the only people who don't think so are the Nintendo-loving nerds who continue to hold fast to their memories of long days and nights alone playing Zelda and Mario. These people have also never felt the touch of a woman.

The fact is, losing 1 BILLION dollars is huge for a company like Nintendo, who can't nearly weather the losses that their competition can. Unless Iwata, Miyamoto, Reggie and company pull their heads out of their asses and stop pretending the company is not in SEVERE jeopardy, we'll all be playing the next Mario on our Playstations, Xboxes, and iPhones A LOT sooner than we expect.

I couldn't agree with this article more. I mean, everyone seems to think that there are always good games coming out that will do wonders for Nintendo systems, then they mention that that game is a Mario game, a Zelda game, or another first-party title. Nintendo NEED better third-party support. Oh, okay, they have Monster Hunter. That's great, but one game will not save a whole company.

Look at the continual big-name titles coming out for PS3 and Xbox 360. Whether or not you like them, they're making loads of money, they're well-known, and they're doing wonders for both systems. If the PS3's only decent games were Uncharted, Killzone and Resistance, and the Xbox 360 relied on Halo, Gears of War and Forza (just examples, mind you), they'd be asking for trouble. Would they sell well? Sure, but they wouldn't keep the systems alive on their own.

I've been a big Nintendo fan for so long now, but really, they're just starting to dig themselves a hole. They've always been fine, but now when things have suddenly taken a huge change in the video game market, they're a fish out of water - they have no idea what to do.

As a side note, I'm still wanting some huge changes in the video game industry. Not because it'd be a good or bad thing. Not for any real reason other than I think it'd be interesting to see such drastic changes.
Imagine if Sega made a hardware comeback (although knowing modern Sega, it'd suck).
Imagine if a new company stepped up and made another competing system. It was Sega and Nintendo. Then Sony entered. Then Sega dropped out and Microsoft entered. Do Apple and Google really count? They make smartphones and tablets (or at least, the software, in Google's case). I want to see someone ELSE (CD-i 2? I kid. That'd be awful).
Imagine if Nintendo failed and died off.

All these possibilities could lead to major changes in the industry. They could also be relatively minor changes. I definitely think they're all possibilities though, no matter how probable (or improbable).

I love what Nintendo does 'when it works'. I grew up playing Nintendo software and i want to see this company succeed however the biggest mistake Nintendo made was not investing into a progressive online infrastructure like Xbox live or PSN. I still cannot understand why. Gamers want additional motivation and interactive features, yes the core game is the most important event but it is not the sole experience. I often find myself just navigating Xbox live or PSN for minutes on end and enjoying myself, chatting with friends, checking my achievements etc. There's not much you can do with the Wii and it's Miis and communication between other players is non existent. even with all of this said playing the recent Mario Galaxy games and recent Kirby iterations have been some of my best gaming experiences this generation but it's unfortunate that these experiences have been short lived by the constant allure of a persistent online community on Xbox live and PSN.

It's weird. Any console that can cater to our most basic need (besides food, shelter, etc) can be appealing to casual gamers I think. What is that need? Socializing. Sure, the 360 and PS3 aren't as kid friendly. But I am sure a casual person would pick up an Xbox 360 to play with their friends. They could just play the popular titles, or some Indie, like Super Meat Boy. Also I don't know what titles a PS3 can offer, don't own one. : D Anyways, casual gamers don't need a console directly targeted at them for them to want it or play it. They just need something they can PLAY.

But you can socialize and still be kid friendly... Friend codes just goes a bit too far.

Wii fit socially acceptable? Sure, it CAN be, but it isn't long lasting or anything. It seems that Wii fit to me, is just an excuse for the Wii to be a video game system that CAN BE socially acceptable. But having a system that can enable you TO socialize with friends, while NOT EVEN playing a game.

Playing a game alone = Can be fun (0r not)
Playing a game with friends = more fun

Example:

Phantasy Star Zero. Was PSO's little bro, yet was much harder to play with friends. You need friend codes... and you can only have 60 max. It was VERY hard to join up with friends to play. Can't add people you find randomly (ofc). It was sooo annoying to deal with.

Game was so fun... but I so wished it was like Xbox live, where I could just message "HEY DUDE I COULDN'T GET IN ; _____ ; , plz re-host!"

Instead your friends are left in the dark without a word. Not that you could say a word at all to begin with. Now you have to go play a game yourself, or play a random game with a stranger with pre-selected game messages. Ugh.

That was not convenient at all. What casual game would want that?

If I'm wrong, please post a response about why it is wrong. : P

Anyways. I'm a nintendo fan. Always was. But of course, I also own a PS1 + PS2 + Xbox 360. Those help me to not be so... close minded. I would really like for Nintendo to get off their butts and do something for us, and everyone else. Give me the mario games I have always loved. And maybe even NEW characters that I can start to love and for our children to love from the start.

I love the N64 and Gamecube. And I intend on getting a Wii sometime soon.

I WILL NOT get a Wii U though. Nor will I get a 3DS. I'm good with my DS. Tough love, Nintendo.

Nintendo would never, ever put its 1st party games on another console, the Sony fanboys seem to want to play Nintendo's games that bad?.

Yes it's a HUGE lost, but they're trying to recover. They really messed up with the game lines up with the 3DS. I kind of regret buying all the launch games I did (Because they suck). I'm sure they have money saved for moments like this. @ all the people saying they'll be out of business soon l o l.

@8692

It's not because I want to see Nintendo's games on another system at all. Honestly? I just want to see them suffer. I don't like the company, and never have. I grew up on the Atari and PC, and only jumped to consoles with the PlayStation. And previously, I had nothing against Nintendo. That was until they decided to bog down the hobby I love with their casual bullshit, that, like it or not, has taken a huge toll on the industry. And honestly, right now I'M LOVING the fact that they're failing horribly with everything they do. And honestly? I think every gamer with an IQ higher than 50, doesn't still live with their parents, and has a full set of dropped testicles wants them to. In other words, not a Nintendo fanboy.

Some of you are going to downvote this and call me an asshole. Well, you're right, I am, and proud to be one. But on the day that Iwata makes his slow, somber walk to the podium to announce Nintendo's third party future, maybe he'll come to regret how his company nearly killed gamers...before the real gamers rolled up and killed it.

Also, when I say Wii fit, I mean to say anything/game that generally brings the "use the motion plus thingy to move the character in game, thus making you exert physical energy" feature.

: P Not just the game Wii fit. hahaha.
