I would be shocked, absolutely stunned, if this was localized in any way, shape or form.

@Vesuvium Count on it being subbed in english as soon as the DVD hits. Hopefully done by a group who doesn't leave in random japanese words and honorifics.

Over-Time would do a good job, I think...

To be fair, the director has several of his movies and such released in the US. You can find Ichi the Killer on Netflix, and he has even made a short for "Masters of Horror", which was done in English for... I think HBO hosted it. That is on Netflix as well.

He has some presence outside of Japan, so who knows we might see a US release.

Not to mention that Sukiyaki Western Django is actually entirely in english... id say its safe to say that this will come out over here, and at the very least someone will fansub it..

I'd much rather see this subbed than go to a theater to watch horrible English dubbing. All the same; that image has me excited.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies I would watch a dub of this ONLY if the script was intelligently localized and the cast knew what the hell they were doing.

Most english speakers are trained to respond to OBJECTION!. The same can't be said for IGIARI!

Definitely. Sadly, there are those who would rather listen to "native language only" even if proper dubbing and script translating were done.

... I'm sorry otakus, Shinesman was better in English than in Japanese. One of those rare cases where the English cultural translating adds more humor.

Personally when I watch French films I always watch them in French with subtitles (and I hardly speak any French at all)... Why is this suddenly wrong now?

(Just snobbery against 'otakus'? If so... can we say 'tired'? Picking on an easy target? Shooting fish in a barrel? Insert metaphor for pointless shit right here.)

The Phoenix Wright game translation is really excellent, don't get me wrong. For a game without voice, unless you actually read Japanese - and read it really well, in the case of a game that's entirely based around reading - there is clearly no option but to translate it entirely. Especially with jokes.

But for a film... somehow, I think I'll cope if he says 'Igi ari' or whatever, and the subtitle reads 'Objection!' I learnt to read quite a long time ago.

And (admittedly with the exception of the word 'Objection' and a few others), reading the English text while looking at pictures is the exact same experience you get when you're playing the game. Most of us managed okay with that.

Anyway, I don't have any objection to it being dubbed. Released at all would be a good start. But in the unlikely event I ever watch it (it's a video game movie, it must be shit... but it's by a well-known and high-quality director... so confused) I'll watch it subtitled thanks.

I was referring to otakus because the ones who claim they are otakus are usually the ones who are against all forms of dubbing.

Read my comment again and you'll find that I have nothing against native languages for films or shows - but you will notice I do have something against those who believe that dubbing is a complete waste of time and shouldn't even be tried.

English dubbing had gone bad in animes, but to say it's a lost art altogether is ignorant.

Sorry if I offended you somehow, just stating that nothing wrong with dubbing. And yes, I took a jab at otakus - specifically, the prideful ones that despise anything non-Japanese. Not taking that back.

Because the stuff they do in the game would make any real lawyer cringe.

The game is supposedly set in a slightly futuristic setting where the laws arent exactly handled the same way (as is obvious from the game). I presume they did this because they knew there'd be things about law that wouldnt fit a game and thus had to create a fake one for the game universe... strangely they did the Harvey Birdman game in a way that better matches current court proceedings, but on the other hand I still wouldnt call that a real court either.

Ya know...the live action Death Note when it was dubbed was honestly not that bad. So it shows that major movies have the ability to dub at decent quality.

So I'd all for a dubbed Phoenix Wright.

I wouldn't bother getting excited. The likelihood of an English localization is near zero, and no amateur fansub group is going to be able to match the quality of localization in the video games.

You do realize that all the puns and jokes are built from the ground up, right?

I'm sorry, but that doesn't look nearly as accurate and impressive as this article makes it out to be.

Then again, people at Joystiq seem to have REALLY low standards when it comes to films based on video games (there was a Joystiq article about the SMB movie in which most of the comments were PRAISING it and downvoting negative comments), so I suppose that's to be expected.
