I haven't played the game yet, but I can't believe what I"m hearing about the PC version.. voice chat does not exist in the game, unless you join a party with your friends BEFORE the game.
What the heck?
That's a huge downgrade from what we saw in Battlefield 2 and 2142. Not being able to voice chat with people until they are on your friends list and until you've formed some party in your Internet browser is just plain weird.

And apparently the jets are extremely gimped at the beginning. You have to unlock even basic equipment like flares and missiles. Weird decision.

@GuardianLegend2 Exactly about the jets. No where do you get a chance to fly them other than in a regular match, at which point you get heatseeked right off the bat. Completely unfair. At least give us flares.

Yeah. Only thing I can recommend is to do is find an empty server and try to level up with a buddy.

Yes, when they are your friends, but that is exactly the issue he's complaining about, he wants to be able to voice chat with people without any sort of buddy list being involved (ingame or skype), so that he can actually co-ordinate with his team, like you're supposed to. And frankly I agree, I want to be able to voice chat with my whole team without needing to have already friended every single person on the team.

While you may want it, full team voice chat wasn't available in the last battlefield either so all your surprised cries don't mean a thing.

Didn't you play BC2? How are people bitching about this?

@Dreamscape

They said from the beginning that BF3 was not BC2. That's why it's held to a higher regard. It's suppose to be the sequel to BF2 (hence the BF3 name), which focused on working with the entire team instead of just your squad. It had built in VoIP not only for your squad mates, but the squad leaders had a channel just for the "commander" who was able to talk to all squad leaders. It wasn't just a bunch of 4 player groups in BF2, it was a coordinated army.

Frankly, after playing BF3, it might as well be called BC3. It bares no resemblance to BF2/2142.

@Dreamscape Right yes, so BFBC2 no having comms is a good enough reason to not have them? Oh - please. It just means there are TWICE as many reasons to be angry about it: the same stupid decision has been made twice. People are bitching about not having voice comms in BF3 on PC because:

* There are voice comms on the console game counterparts. That is as good a reason as any. It makes it look like the PC version is neglected.
* Battlefield 2 (and arguably 2142) had it perfect. If BF3 had been remade with the new engine, most players would have been more than happy. The Bad Company series is not the true successor to BF2 / 2142. It was a series aimed at breaking on to the mainstream console market.
* The most important factor of all: Squad play is INTEGRAL to the gameplay of the Battlefield series!!! The difference between a squad that can talk to each other and one that can not, basically makes the difference between winning or losing.

My neighbor let me borrow his copy while he was at work. I played for a couple hours Tuesday and Wednesday and I was some what disappointed. I cancelled my pre order. The games cool, but I dont think it's worth $60. I'll wait for an Ultimate edition or a significant price drop.

IMO you want to give it at least a month on console. PS3 voice chat is basically non-functioning (people constantly breaking up and sounding unintelligable), DICE say they're working on the input lag issue. Servers are hit and miss, with lots of rubber-band lag on some maps.

I would wait for the patch. I wish I had.

That sounds about right.

I have experienced a few of the scripting errors, the loss of sound, some terrain clipping, but no disappearing AI characters yet. Fingers crossed.

When the multiplayer is working though, it feels so right.

All-in-all, i felt like the review was kind of scathing and somewhat negative, then surprised to see this score a 4.5 out of 5. The BF 3 campaign seemed like it tried to copy too much from the COD 4 camapign.

It's the good things that outdo the wrongs IMO. To be honest I will probably not bother with single player until my Internet is down or something. I'm enjoying co-op though and I can't even fly the helicopter on the second one. When flying, my greatest enemy... is trees.

This review doesn't seem to match 4.5 stars? I'm sure I'm not part of the many but I was really looking forward to the campaign. I'm starting to get a headache (I've been trying to decide if I should get this or MW3). I have always played COD but was looking for something different. But then the beta turned all of my friends off so they are all buying MW3. Well if I don't get this and just get MW, I still hope it does well and gives MW great competition because that just makes other developers work harder to make a better game and we all (gamers) benefit from that!

@pally321 I'm guessing you've only ever heard the word, the first step to using big fancy words in arguments to try to sound smart is to learn how to spell them, even if you misuse them, you'll still seem smarter than if you had egregiously mis-spelled them.

p.s. the word is "hypocrisy" "hypocracy" would probably be some sort of government, see "democracy".

"The singled player is not much fun...." An article on how the online has been broken and yet it still gets a 4.5/5? Inflated review score syndrome strikes again, where the score does not match the text.

"Joystiq's review scores are based on a scale of whether the game in question is worth your time -- a five-star being a definitive "yes," and a one-star being a definitive "no."

Single player was basically omitted from the score, and lets face it, BF is not a single player series. 4.5/5 demonstrates that if you like online MP shooters, you should buy this game.

@bloodlinejake Me and my buddies have not been able to play a single game so far outside of one squad deathmatch game. Most of the time we can't get into a game at all. When we do get into a game, we're put on opposite teams, or in separate squads. The couple times we did manage to get into a rush or conquest game 2 or more of us were dropped from the game. It's completely broken. We're all going to trade in the game because we can't actually play together.

Besides being told in the way that Black Ops story was told, the campaign seems to be shaping up quite nicely ( I'm about three missions in). I don't know if it all goes down hill from there (judging by every reviewer's negativity), but so far there's no reason to complain about it being bad. As for the multiplayer, it is absolutely incredible. I like Call of Duty just as much as Battlefield but the feeling of soaring over mayhem and destruction in a fighter jet or even hunkering down with your teammates in a firefight has no equal. So if you want to be a one man army, go ahead and stick with Call of Duty, but I gotta say you're sure missing out on something special.

It isn't noted in the review, but the PS3 version's multiplayer is running much better than the 360 version. Matches for the game are always available and run well. There is sometimes a bit of rubber banding from lag, but it's mostly uncommon. Getting into games alone is easy and consistent. I haven't experienced any multiplayer drops or glitches yet and I've been playing for over a dozen hours in matches (probably 16-20 including suad chat, soldier customization, matchmaking, lobbies, and menus overall). It can, however be difficult to get a whole squad into the same game or on to the same side. Often what happens is you'll be split up across squads and sides until the next map when the game automatically puts you back together on one side. Hopefully this is fixed as more matches become available with the growing user base.

@(Unverified) - I've actually had the same experience you described on the 360. Yeah, the servers have been down occasionally but otherwise & there has been a bit of lag, everything has run great.

I don't think it's near the disaster a lot of people are making it out to be. They are probably people that expect everything to work flawlessly all the time & guess what? That's not how technology goes & it never will be.

I think the servers being down at all is a shame, as that isn't the case on PS3, but it's good to hear DICE did a decent job on all the platforms. Things are usually exaggerated on the internet.
