Actually, I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy is made by some company named after a shape, not XSEED. The name eludes me at the moment...

You're also forgetting that other company that fused in with said shape. A company who's name is a play on the word "ENIAC" and "phoenix" ...

You know...

Some fun and unique RPGs can still be found in the indie space that pay homage to the good old days.

Anyone ever play a corporate RPG with a FF feel?: http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=32972&st=0

Thank you for this article! I picked this game up after a few months of nothingness on my PSP thanks to an article review online. I cannot say how glad I am to have stumbled upon this. This game is really where JRPGs shine.

This game has made me a permanent fan of Falcom and the Kiseki series forever, and though it's a long, long way away, I cannot wait until the Second Chapter comes out!

@claza Considering the evil, evil ending, I can see why you can't wait until SC comes out. ;)

The 3rd is interesting in its own right, although it's not as good as FC+SC (it does a lot of bridging through to Zero). Zero no kiseki isn't bad; they've done a few interesting tweaks to the combat system. The music's not as good, but I suspect my issue with the plot is that I've seen what they did with FC+SC, and (not having *quite* finished it yet), I suspect that it's FC all over again - that it will be an introduction through to when I get around to opening my copy of Ao no kiseki. On the other hand, you get to see all kinds of references back to FC+SC, which probably confuses the hell out of anybody who tried to start from Zero no kiseki.

In all seriousness, I have considered porting Second Chapter and trying to get through it with a large Japanese-English dictionary and my limited knowledge of written Japanese. However, since SC is twice as large as FC (or so I've heard), so it's very intimidating, but all the more exciting.

I assume you are fluent in the language to have played all the Kiseki games, I wish I continued my education in Japanese!

I plan to get this game when I can afford either a Vita or a new PSP; the writer of the article is correct; games like this (or say, Valkyria Chronicles) are criminally overlooked by the majority of gamers.

Is this simply due to a shift in gamer taste, though? Perhaps to some degree, but I would argue that it has a lot to do with the rise of internet websites like JoyStiq and especially IGN. Back in the day I'd walk to my mailbox around July or August and feast my eyes on extensive coverage of EVERY game from that year's E3 (or CES before that); while there was some more extensive coverage of surefire hits like the next Mario, Sonic, or Halo, there was at least one photograph and a short description of every other game from lesser-known companies, so at least gamers could be aware of what was coming.

It may seem ironic then that with the vastly increased information capacity of the internet that we actually seem to get LESS overall coverage of the entire gaming landscape. Much of this has to do with certain sites (cough, IGN, cough) literally having daily articles and spoiler-filled blowouts of the games THEY perceive you're interested in (namely the latest big-budget FPS or third-person action game). Everything else gets the equivalent of table scraps if they are covered at all. And gaming websites are far from the only culprits; developers often show bias in favor of projects they feel will be more profitable, as Sega did with Valkyria Chronicles, barely bothering to market it in favor of hyping their next (at the time) underwhelming Sonic title. And E3 has for all intents and purposes become an annual FPS and tech add-on promotion; anything that doesn't make it onto the stage at the main presentations is lucky if they get any notice at all from the media or gamers.

The effects of all this are the decline or death of entire genre types this console generation, and games like The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky going unnoticed. It isn't that many gamers wouldn't have been interested; we just often never get a real chance to read or hear about so many deserving games anymore based solely on the fact the powers-that-be are too intent on writing the latest Call of Duty or Battlefield hype article to show objective journalism. Too many gaming journalists nowadays would better serve their readers if they were more journalist and less fanboy.

Well, that's not entirely true. There's plenty of journalism out there that talks about the underdog video games. The only problem is, without enough coverage of big ol' games, they just don't get the readers they need to keep going. There's still a few out there, though-- TinyCartridge, is, as always, fantastic for portable systems, and No High Scores used to be pretty good for PC (haven't read it in a while, honestly). Heck, Nintendojo--remember them?--is still kicking around on its fifteenth year, though it's been a while since it's exploded in popularity.

Good journalism-- or at least journalism that talks about Good Games-- is still around. Just gotta look for it.

I have almost all the other xseed rpgs that have come out and in their limited editions, and I really enjoy the work that the company has put on to release these games, but I skipped Trails in the Sky because I kept hearing how long it is and I didn't get enough incentive for the time investment.

This article has changed that, at least to the point where I want to find out more about the game and probably get it and dive into it. It really sounds like I can enjoy all the effort put into it and everything said here made it sound like my kind of game.

Thanks for the article, I will check this game out ;D

I have been raving about this game for months. Glad somebody else cares.

To everyone planning on getting it on Vita, there is a little problem: This game is only part 1. And believe me, when you get to the end you will want part 2. Why is that a problem? Well, even though part 1 is on PSN, part 2 takes up 2 UMDs (yeah, by itself) and it was never designed with a PSN version in mind (it came out a few years ago in Japan, before the Go and all that). Unfortunately there are technical issues preventing there from being a PSN version. What does that mean for the US release of the second chapter? I have no idea. Unfortunately, it seems like neither Falcom nor Xseed really know either.

And before anyone pops in says that Type-0 is on two UMDs and it has a PSN version, Type-0 was programmed specifcally with a PSN version in mind. Trails in the Sky SC was not. Whatever solution Square Enix came up with for Type-0 does not necessarily apply here. Could Falcom theoretically recode Trails in the Sky SC to make a PSN version? Sure, it's possible, but Falcom is a very small company and their resources are tied up in other projects right now.

The bottom line is that the future of this franchise in the US is in danger with the UMD market being the way it is...

@Kevadu So, I know it has a sequel, but is part 1 a complete story? As in a complete, satisfying narrative? I remember hating Golden Sun because the first game has no real 3rd act.

Truthfully, that's a difficult question to answer. One the one hand there is a satisfying narrative and fairly complete conclusion of a major story arc, but on the other hand the game ends with big cliffhanger/teaser for the next story arc. If you like the characters at all (and you should, they're well-written) then you will want to know what happens next.

I played trails in the sky (or sora no kiseki) 1st and 2nd kind of 5 years ago when I was in japan.. is the US release featuring all three chapters?
that was a trilogy released in a more than 5 years time span...

On a side note, zero no kiseki (kind of a sequel to trails in the sky) is also pretty solid. I imported it for the psp last year.
Waiting to get its sequel ao no kiseki next year on VITA which will have full voice acting and hopefully higher graphical quality. The current psp version also seems to have some bug issues.

I'm glad you liked them. I played through the trilogy of Sora no Kiseki and I observed a general patter of First Story > Second Story > "Fan Disk" (whatever the name for the 3rd title). I think the series created a vibrant world of technology and magic, but the story after the first game lost the charm for me as it became increasingly cliched as other JRPG.

And lol, Zero no Kiseki. The marketing seems to be heavily targeting moef*gs that really turned me off.

I haven't played it yet, but I will let you know "The Legend of Heroes" sounds like the most generic, cookie-cutter title for a game I've ever heard. It sounds like something you'd see advertised as a "free MMORPG" on some crappy gaming website with a dozen users.

I know don't judge a book by its cover, but that name isn't doing any favors in helping that game get noticed.

The original title on snes (I remember it was ported from pc88) is "dragon slayer" though :)
The Legend of Heroes 3, 4 ,5, which is also called the kakabu trilogy is also very famous. trails in the sky is the legend of heroes 6.

I'm surprised so many people here don't even know the series...
It's a pretty major jrpg franchise in Japan and other Asian countries, released on many platforms. (maybe less popular than square rpgs and tales, but still)

I dislike how some people judge games by their genre... not every FPS is generic and same-y, not every JRPG is an underrated masterpiece... every genre has good and bad games. Yes, it sucks to see good games not get the promotion they deserve, but it sucks just as much to see people try to bring down AAA games just because they're widely popular. It's okay to like Tales Games AND Call of Duty games. Each have their merits.
