This Halloween weekend, many major game distributors are treating us to some massive sales on games they consider "scary," "dark," or that include zombies. To make the scavenging easy while you put the final touches on your Pyramid Head costume (you freak), we've compiled the Halloween-weekend deals from EA, GoG, Direct2Drive, Namco Bandai and OnLive right here.
The trick? We're eating all the candy ourselves, and you get none. Boo-ya.
EA Mobile has dozens of games for iPad on sale, some up to 80 percent, including Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and Tetris. For Android, The Sims, Tetris, Madden NFL 12, FIFA 10 and Need for Speed: Shift are on sale, and Plants vs. Zombies is cheap on iPhone and iPod Touch.
Most of Namco Bandai's iOS and Android titles are 50 percent off or more, except for Puzzle Quest 2, which is 20 percent off (Figure out that puzzle, brainiac).
Direct2Drive wants you to get costume ideas from its sale titles, which include Dead Space 2 for $9.95, Borderlands for $4.95, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for $19.95 and the Penumbra Collection for $4.95.
All of GOG's sale titles are 50 percent off, including three Gabriel Knight games for $2.99 each, Sanitarium for $4.99 and Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption for $2.99.
OnLive is handing out the jumbo Butterfingers, allowing users to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent, F.E.A.R 3, Metro 2033 and Orcs Must Die! for free all weekend long.

Steam has a Dead Space collection for 14 dollars. Both games for 14. I see these 'deals' for Dead Space 2 for 10 bucks and say, why bother when I can get them both on steam? They have tons of other deals too, up until the 31st, like the first two STALKER's for 7 bucks, FEAR and all the goodies + FEAR 2 for $7. It's the deal palace.

Only thing I don't like about Steam, is that you're not buying the games, you're buying "subscriptions" to them, in Valve's parlance. That seems to be one step weaker than buying a "license" to play a game, because licenses are typically harder to revoke, and as a licensee, you have certain rights if it were ever to stop working outside of the terms of the license. But, a subscription... That's pretty much no rights at all.
That said, for the sales they throw, I'm willing to overlook that and just pretend I'm getting decade-long rentals on the cheap.

@sigma8 Oh? How about buying digital goods from PSN and XBL? Aren't they similar to Steam purchases as well? At least with Steam, if it ever goes down, I have the games on my HDD to crack and play. I can't do that with a console if their system goes down.

@sigma8 Okay. So don't buy them? I don't care what you do. Why even post this?

@nerdydesi1 Most PSN games can be played without being hooked up to the internet. There are a couple that require you to be online though.

...unless you're buying from CD Projekt, nearly every digital distribution service has the same language in their EULA with some taking the additional step of revoking your CD keys if you don't sign into their client from time to time. I'd rather buy a game through Steam than GFWL or experience the incompatibilities found in D2D titles.

Yeah, I'm not saying that consoles treat us better. It's really not a huge issue, as long as you don't think you own anything. If you think you own it, you'll probably get surprised someday. Valve's use of the word "subscription" is apt and well chosen. And I'd rather buy a game from a Steam sale for $15 and play it and beat and then not care what happens to it...rather than buy it for $40 at EBgames, beat it, then bother with selling it back (and only getting maybe $20 for it--store credit)..

Find me any modern PC game developed by a big studio that doesn't include this sort of language in their terms of use. Acting like this is unique to Steam just makes you look like an idiot.

C. Termination by Valve.
1. In the case of a recurring payment Subscription (e.g., a monthly subscription), in the event that Valve terminates or cancels your Account or a particular Subscription for convenience, Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide a prorated refund of any prepaid Subscription fees paid to Valve.
2. In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase.
3. In the case of a free Subscription, Valve may choose to terminate or amend the terms of the Subscription as provided in the "Amendments to this Agreement" section above.

Nothing is as bad as Origin's 2 year policy.
But regardless, who cares? If and when a situation arises where ownership/licensing issues become a problem, its something to worry about. Until then, you're still getting full access to the games at your leisure, so its water under the bridge.
Besides, Valve has a much better track record than other companies at doing the right thing for the good of the consumer. I'd much rather buy games from Steam than retail, where recourse is difficult if not impossible if there are any outstanding problems. Valve will actually work with you. Best Buy won't even let you return an open game and GameStop will rape you without a pause. No thanks.

Valve has repeatedly said that if and whenever they close their storefront down that they will give everyone a way to play their games uninhibited.
Sure, their official TOS leaves open the possibility that they can back out for whatever reasons (most likely other devs/pubs having a hissy fit) but you can be damn sure that they have your interests at heart. As much as a company can, at least.
Can't say the same about Origin and some of their crap and when you factor in Ubi's DRM policies that are erratic and irrational, it wouldn't matter what steam did once Ubi turned off their servers to verify ownership.

I guess we just read that in different ways. First off, in the first thing you posted, I agree. That's the same everywhere. But, more interestingly, in the second bit you posted:
C.1. "Valve...is not obligated to...refund" (and no, I'm not mincing just to mince.. If you read it, they have no obligation whatsoever to refund)
C.2. "Valve may...terminate or cancel...and...is not obligated..." to provide a playable version.
Their terms include a lot of "Valve may, but is not obligated to..." which means if they do anything at all, it will be from their good will, which feeds into what
@Mmmmz
...said, about how they said they'd make things playable if they had to shut down. Clearly, they are not obligated to. I think whether that happens would be more up to the other publishers and Valve's successor, than Valve. It's issues like this that keep me from falling in love with Steam. I like Steam, though. We're friends.

Right. Blood would be appropriate.. And games like Sanitarium and (on Steam) Amnesia are more like November 1st (or January 1st) "morning after" style games.. right? They're like when you wake up at the crack of dawn wearing somebody else's clothes and you're like "where the heck am I?"

Blood was on sale the weekend before last, as was Alone in the Dark - that's probably why they aren't included.
