Even though i agree that nothing new is commented in the article i wonder why the guy of joystiq was so worried about this mechanics??? i mean when other big titles like for example Skyrim was presented to the press what was the difference??? it can be played form a first person point of view..... done before, you can change your character too!!..... done before, it´s an open world..... done too. Oh and there are dragons!!! lots of them........... To be honest i don´t think any RPG or sandbox can have ANYTHING new in this times, because it´s very hard to give something that you haven´t seen before, even the new GTA V is going to be more of the same, i don´t think there is going to be anything new in that one, but i don´t think joystiq is going to get mad because you can kill people in that one and that has been done before. to say that this game in particular is going to be bad without playing the final version first, and just because they are adding EXACTLY the same stuff that everybody else adds, but not complaining of this when other games are introduced..... i don´t know , this sounds a little bit weird .....a little bit suspicious too.

The writer isn't criticizing the mechanics themselves. He is criticizing the manner in which they were presented. According to the writer, Capcom wasn't introducing anything new, but they apparently acted as though they were.

To Add on skyrim is probably has more to offer then just the combat, including a story and environment type concepts that will enhance the game, I think the writer is basically pointing out to its averageness and probably the awkwardness of watching more on fluff then anything. Usually you would focus on strong points rather then.....fluff i guess.

This article seemed a little harsh. While the assets showed off at the press conference weren't groundbreaking, I don't think Capcom has ever created a game with these features. My takeaway was Capcom saying "Hey, we can do what your other favorite titles can do too!" which isn't a bad thing.

@Slixshot I have mixed feelings. It's true that some of these features are a pretty big deal for Capcom, but is this something I should truly be excited about? I hate to say this, but this game doesn't really seem to have a soul. It feels like it's trying to hard to cash in on Demon's Souls and Oblivion (since Dark Souls and Skyrim weren't announced when they started development).

I commend Capcom for trying to stay current, but they've got to not just be current, they've got to be special. I just don't see anything special about Dragon's Dogma yet. I hope I'm proven wrong.

The trailers for this bad boy have been setting off alarm bells. I would love to see a game of Demon's Souls meets Shadow of the Colossus, but what I have seen looks to be a poorly-animated hodgepodge of RPG features with ho-hum graphics and animation and a lumbering, off-putting story.

Special mention must go to the music, which in one of the trailers was so shrill and annoying that I turned the sound off on the trailer. This is not what potential customers should be doing, Capcom.

"Character customization is an odd bullet point to linger on ... especially without anything striking or unique on display, and especially when we all rightly assume these sorts of status-quo features in any RPG worth its salt."

That's a bizarre statement. There are plenty of great RPGs that don't have character creation. It's more common in JRPGs but let's not turn this into an east vs. west thing either. How about Deus Ex? Or my favorite game of all time, Planescape: Torment. I guess they aren't 'worth their salt'...

That said I played some Dragon's Dogma at PAX and I agree that it seems pretty mediocre.

I think what he means is that most modern big budget RPG's include character creation as a standard. Fallout NV, Oblivion, Dark Souls, Dragon age, all modern RPG's and all include character creation.

Please Character Customization is a rarity let alone when it isn't a joke. Fallout NV is a prime example, you choose what gender and race? Brink had more CC than Fallout NV did! Though I admit that without VO work CC can often feel hollow and by the numbers because developers who wont commit to VO work usually skimp on story as well.

Seems like Capcom is half-heartedly re-entering the RPG genre with a more realistic look and aim at titles like Dragon Age and...probably not quite creating anything memorable.

It's really great to see more games journalists who have the balls to be critical of games, and on an analytic level instead of a knee-jerk nerdrage level (coughkotakucoughhackwheeze).

The "pointing out completely banal things as if they're a big deal" stuff seems to be something you see a lot from Japanese developers (who can forget "real-time weapon switching"), so I'm glad you're callin' these dudes out on it.

They had some decent trailers for this showing the player character climbing all over big monsters Shadow of Collosus style... did they show any of that in the demo? Because I was a little drawn to the game after seeing the trailer.

But this is a really abysmal write up. I'm actually having a tough time believing the game is THAT bad based on what i've seen. Maybe the presenter was shitty?

Um.. Having a character customizer in a Japanese game IS kind of a big deal. Dark Souls is one of the very few that feature one.

White Knight Chronicles, a bunch of PS2 JRPG's I can't remember the titles of(they weren't that good) and some SNES JRPG's allow for character creation. It hasn't been a recent feature.

Having character creation in a press demo is pretty dumb, the point of what the article is saying is that they spent so much time on the character creation and not on the game that it made the writer wonder if the game was even worth seeing. It's a reasonable complaint.

I'm baffled by this preview. So it 'might not be good' because it uses game mechanics shared by a plethora of other games? I can understand the basic premise of the argument, what I'm having difficult with is that originality is suddenly an issue now, specifically for this type of game. Why is that? And not in the utter deluge of other cookie-cutter games in preview?

It's not that I'm somehow defending Dragons Dogma because up until this article I had never heard of it, and judging from what I can find elsewhere it's not something I'm going to be interested in, but I just don't understand why this gets such a negative preview when other games get a free pass, and they're as derivative as can be.

@archipelagos

The game does have some interesting systems, at least from what I've seen in prior previews. There's a pretty cool partner-AI system with which you can customize a companion, and then allow other players to recruit that companion in to their games (and vice versa). The AI will also learn from things they experience in other players' games-- if they help another player defeat a boss that's weak to fire, they'll tip you off about the fire weakness when you reach that encounter.

That seems to be the soul unique hook for the game that I've seen.

With that in mind, I think Mr. Scott's write up is fair, assuming he covered what was shown. If Capcom decided to show off this game by lauding systems and mechanics that have long since become old hat, then they don't deserve any praise for doing so.

The interesting things about Dragon's Dogma aren't the things that dozens of RPGs have done before.

More like Ryan Snott. Because he's snotty, and named Ryan Scott, so I just replaced the 'c' with an 'n', because witernet.

I have some hope, still, although most of the footage I've seen and the few previews about it all say the same thing; ambitious but jank and unfun to play. Shame if that turns out to be the case -- Dark Souls of the ColossusCraft is an intriguing mix.

I've seen extended gameplay that just looked really bland.

First off, when the character is climbing on a beast, he/she looks more like an ant covered in honey trying to find its way around a dog's hair.

Something about the combat seems off. Just watch the characters swipe at enemies and you might see what I mean. The interactions just aren't satisfying.

Watch something that isn't a trailer and you'll see this game in a different light.

Straight up, even though I haven't been following this game ultra closely, the games that seem to be the least hype are the ones that try to mimic games that sell like hotcakes in western territories. If they just kept the Capcom flair that got them so famous in the first place instead of westernizing the games into a "me too" level of mediocrity they'd be alright.

DmC looks like it's doing it too. There was the game with the guy with the jet pack they released a while ago. Even Bionic Commando, which I've heard mixed things about all have either done it or are going down that path. It's not their style that's losing the money, it's something they're going to have to figure out with the core of their business model. I just hope they figure it out before they fade into obscurity.

It's like like Scott's saying it's a bad game. It's just that he didn't see anything to make this game stand out in the crowd of modern RPGs. Sure it may be unique as far as JRPGs go for the current gen, but if they're going to be competing on a global scale they have to stop their game up.

Everyone else that has played it has said it was a great game.

How is this anything like slamming Monster Hunter despite its fanbase? How does having a huge fanbase justify anything, anyway?

This game isn't out. It can't possibly have a fanbase that's been drawn in by anything more than marketing.

This wasn't a hands-on preview event. How is anyone going to judge the "fun factor" of something they watched someone else play, especially when they watched someone play in the manner that's described in the article?

This wasn't even a flashy "dude doing awesome stuff in god-mode" preview like BioShock Infinite got (that was supposed to convey the "fun factor," I guess), but a guy showing off stale mechanics as if they were innovative.

There are interesting things going on in Dragon's Dogma, and it's that much more troubling that they decided to show off rote boss mechanics and slider-laden character creation instead.

You really didn't have to farm that much in Dark Souls. They give you plenty of bosses and monsters to acquire souls while you progress in the game. Course if you always lost souls then I can see farming as a viable option.

Well for me the boss soul weapons were terrible compared to the weapons I upgraded myself.

I didn't have to farm much personally, but only because I focused all the ores into just one or two weapons. This made the game boring though. I was always using the same two weapons. I would've liked more freedom to pick different weapons...

Can't help but be a fanboy.. but when they 'teased' for this game, I was hoping for a Breath of Fire (only one of five was sub par in my book, for it's time).. and now I'm very, very glad that it is not. This game looks like junk. Though I'll be fair, I haven't been drawn in by any 'open world rpg' since Morrowind, and even that didn't last but a month or so.

Open world games tend to play like this for me: "Oh, that's neat! That's new... and... now i'm doing it again.. and again... generic guy wants me to kill generic thing or go into generic dungeon.. again..hmm." trade it in for something else.
