Ecco's drown/death squeal is still to me the scariest sound in video games. A wild fear of oceanic creatures was always a factor, but I've always found this game to be terrifying.

@MLS
I felt the same about Sonic the Hedgehog's death music in the earlier(16-bit)games. There's just something *wrong* about subjecting a young gamer to watch a clock countdown to their protagonist/hero's drowning death.

@foxhound

I'm still terrified by the death sound and animation in sonic spinball. Wtf was that about!?

The red screen also happened to me. Even now, like 20 years later I still remember the SHEER TERROR I felt when I first saw it. And that is not hyperbole.

"And the second-to-last stage is an unpredictable autoscrolling level that can crush you instantaneously. I suspect other people who played through Ecco cried a little inside just remembering that level."

Gee, thanks. I *was* having a good day.

I remember it was very bizarre with the whole alien agenda. The commercial was great.

@BrianZeluz

You're jumping over 10 years in the future.

"So, of course, when Ecco the Dolphin came out for the Genesis..."

@CaptainProtonX means nothing to me, anyway since you're such a fountain of knowledge can you tell me what game it is I'm thinking of? Is it related to the one in the article?

@BrianZeluz

I'm a fountain of "something".

You're thinking of an Ecco, but "Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future". It was released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and then ported to the PS2 in 2002.

Heidi's article is about Ecco the Dolphin, the Genesis game from 1992.

I only rented Ecco, and I never even made it to the part with the whole alien plot switcharoo. Makes me want to try it again, I'm pretty sure it's on the Ultimate Genesis Collection. I'll have to give it another try.

Well. I never played the game and was under the impression it was a nice, relaxing exploration game.

Aliens? Dolphins weak (?)...well ecco obviously wasn't.

Interesting.

I love the Ecco series, but it has ALWAYS scared me in many of the same ways. The unknown enemies lurking in the abyss, the constant managing of your air/health, the aliens, that ALIEN QUEEN... I still can't play it.

I think what gets me is the ocean, itself. Some of the levels are truly unnerving, because you don't know what could be in store for you around the bend, or deeper in the water. The sonar map helps, but it still doesn't prepare you for what's ahead.

I never played very far into any of the Ecco games. They always seemed to make my head hurt, I guess the scrolling doesn't agree with me, or something. I can see being terrified of your poor little dolphin being threatened by bigger aquatic animals, though, and, apparently, extraterrestrial, non-aquatic animals.

I've been harping to Sega for a DS side scrolling version of the first two Ecco's.

Now it's time to start with harping about 3DS versions.
