Mechwarrior reboot will be PC exclusive
93
After being teased over two years ago, the return of Mechwarrior is apparently around the corner.
PC Gamer reports that it has the details on the reboot, which will be a PC exclusive title. It will allegedly update with more information in a few hours, with "one very big surprise," so we'll be sure to let you know then.
The franchise has been making its return to the game space, stomping along slowly like an Atlas mech, for several years, with Jordan Weisman's Smith & Tinker obtaining the rights back in 2007. This was followed by a tease of the reboot in 2009, with a trademark dispute shortly thereafter. Since then, things have been very quiet... until now.
Update: PC Gamer notes the game will be freemium and launch in the second half of 2012.

Maybe this will lead to another/new MechAssault on the 360. One can dream.

Your thinking of Steel Battalion. Mech Assault was a solid originial Xbox series, with Mech Assault 2 having excellent online multiplayer.
I'd love to see another game in that series, but I'm psyched for the Mechwarrior reboot too.

Many of us loved that game more than life itself. Seeing as MA was my favorite game of all time that I'd still play it on occasion if the original Xbox servers were still up I can attest to this. As can the rest of the diehard MA community.

As someone who's been a supporter of Battletech since the early 90s and Mechwarrior games since the start, I can't say how disappointed I am in this. I guess it's nice for those with the hundreds of dollars to spend on a gaming PC, though.

I don't get your argument here. You've been a fan since the first game, but you don't want it on PC? Then you're not a fan...Complete contradiction there.

@LordPoncho I thought the statement was pretty obvious, if you look over it. Being PC exclusive is going to alienate a lot of potential fans.

It's going to alienate console only fans. Which, compared to the following of the original PC fans, I would say is a small percentage.

You really picked the wrong way to word this argument. Especially when the specs aren't out.

@Sopa de Gato How is it being on the PC going to alienate a lot of fans? I think hardcore Battletech/Mechwarrior fans are usually PC gamers anyway so I think this is a smart move. I'm actually glad that its going to be on the PC only because I believe the PC can really show the full potential of a Mech Warrior game.
Though I am a big fan of Mech Assault, but a Mech Warrior game? Keep it on the PC.

This, 100%. MechWarrior can stay on PC. MechAssault can stay on consoles. Simple as that.
MechAssault fans probably haven't even heard of MechWarrior and won't equate MechWarrior to being of the same series.

@Sopa de Gato I think a 360 or PS3 could handle the graphics for the next one, I dont think they have ever really been graphical power houses (although they looked good). The issue is the controls. Granted, console controllers have duel analog now so I think steering would be OK, but there are a SHIT TON of hot keys you need to have mapped if you want to play this game effectively.
I will be damned if they shoe horn in a rotating menu in to control team mates, use cooling, adjust speed, use boosters, switch firing groupings, power down, get repaired, ect....just to have it on console. I think they made the right decision here.

I got your back on this!
I've also played Battletech since '90 and I played Mechwarrior on my 486 and that sucks obviously won't be able to play the reboot, lol. I've played/owned them all, actually. And a machine that was a power-house when Mechwarrior 4 was out is a total joke now. And since then, all my gaming has been on my console. In fact, I haven't bought a new PC in years because I simply don't need it.
So Mechwarrior Reboot being PC only is totally bad news for me.

I think "POTENTIAL" fans is the key phrase here. I might be happy to pick this up if I had a PC that couple play it. A 4 year old laptop is probably not going to cut it. Releasing it on a 5 year old console that looks nearly as good as a high end PC connected to a 50 inch screen that I already own on the other hand.
The majority of current fans might be PC owners and for you guys; Awesome, I'm honestly incredibly happy for you, but that doesnt mean there's enough of you guys to support the number of sales they may need to make it a profitable franchise that will spawn further investment again. Maybe their are, I mean that seems to be what they're counting on by making it PC exclusive, but a multiplatform strategy guarantees greater sales period. But good luck still, while I'm not a huge battletech fan I'd still like to see it work out.

Sad it isn't gonna be on consoles :'( Don't get me wrong, I used to be exclusively a PC gamer and I loved it, played every single Mechwarrior game faithfully. It's so hard to maintain a PC nowadays, speaking for myself at least. Too many other more important things I could be spending my money on.
Alas, I'm sure I'll have to budget in a decent PC at SOME point in the future to get a taste of this new Mechwarrior game >:D

I suspect that the same reasons RTS's and MMOs are generally exclusive to the PC will be the same reason this will. Control schemes.
Mechwarrior games are different from the more casual mechassault games, (for those not aware,) MW leans more towards a 'simulator' type setup, so a lot of buttons are employed, just like RTS and MMOs do. From this perspective making the game work on consoles would be a matter of 'dumbing down' the controls or possibly changing things in the game itself around to accommodate the different control scheme. The controls I think are the biggest thing holding them back on that end. Part of the fun of mechwarrior is operating your mech better than the other person.
Any mechassault players who havent played mechwarrior, should go check out mechwarrior 4, as it is free now, and I would be amazed if it couldn't run on any computer still operating today. That will show you the difference betweeen the games, Im hoping things are more like Mechwarrior 2 mercenaries though than Mechwarrior 4, but something tells me we won't be that fortunate.
It is possible they will bring it to consoles, but at least they won't be changing the PC version to accommodate the console release if it is the case, which can sometimes be disappointing.

@Draugdraugr Yeah that's what I was thinking too. While I would love to see it make it's way to consoles, years of playing the old Mechwarrior games makes me think of the custom joystick schemes I'd constantly tinker with and configure which just added to the fun of it all, but I couldn't see all of that seamlessly transitioning to a 360 or PS3 gamepad... I'd love to be proven wrong though! Either way, I'll have to see if I can mooch off of a friend's PC who get's this... or start saving again. Heh.

I always meant to try out the fanmade Mechwarrior 4 but haven't got around to it. This I will have to try although I haven't played Mechwarrior since the Ghost Base expansion pack for Mechwarrior 2. And as for the gaming PC complainers, come on! $140 graphics card + $178 CPU/MB combo + $50 8GB memory + $100 case/power supply + $50 hard drive = great gaming system for $518, and you could probably do better than that. In return you get better graphics than consoles and lower game prices than consoles, never mind the wonderful world of Steam sales.

@Cranky Penguin You can still download Mechwarrior 4 for free on the MekTek site, and its official expansions I believe. Then of course the fan made expansions, which are actually quite awesome and very faithful to Battletech/Mechwarrior (as well as being fun, which is really what matters, isn't it?)

The community work put in on mechwarrior 4 has been phenomenal, and anyone who hasn't checked it out, I would encourage to do so (even ancient systems should be able to run this with no issues.) the amount of weaponry, mechs and maps is quite extensive. easily one of the best free games out.
If you're a fan of mechwarrior/mechs/sims then I don't see why you won't enjoy it.

The money saved in game purchases is offset by the expense of a new gaming pc. 518 bucks? I spent that money 5 years ago on a console. People try to explain away the cost involved by saying it's not as much as people think and it's not a grand for a new machine like people hyperbolize so often but it's still a brand new purchase for something that you may end up having to upgrade in a couple of years as new PC games occasionally demand greater specs to get the better graphics they're capable of. Otherwise you might as well have just gotten a console that doesnt require new parts and doesnt have to fear anything involving driver issues or other PC specific issues.
But hey if you're into that sort of thing cool, have fun just dont think it's the only way games should be played and hate on console gamers for wishing it was easier.

@PN04 2 I disagree for two reasons 1. The price of games. Once you buy the console (+xbox live for say 4 years atleast) you have the price of the games, pc gaming is cheaper in the long run aslong as you don't buy games as soon as they come out (and if your making the arguement that pc gaming is too expensive then this shouldn't be true) you can get games for up to one sixth of the price. This excludes the fact that most households in first world countries already have a pc and most likely will buy another one in the future when it's time to upgrade
2. I have both a xbox 360 and pc and even on low settings my pc looks FAR superior to my console. Graphics aren't the only improvement either, you have phys x , direct x 11/tessellation and anti-aliasing all working whilst still giving you 60fps.. in any resolution you want, in any aspect ratio you want etc. I like my xbox but in terms of how impressive games are , it does not compare to my pc on even medium settings.

"t's not a grand for a new machine like people hyperbolize so often but it's still a brand new purchase for something that you may end up having to upgrade in a couple of years as new PC games occasionally demand greater specs"
Someone who built a decent mid-range PC 5 years ago is still able to play the vast majority of multiplatform titles with higher levels of image quality and higher framerates than they would on a console; with the exception of roughly 10 games (four of them being forward looking titles, the rest of them are sloppily coded console ports), there's very little someone with a highly clocked Core 2 Duo and a Geforce 8800 GT couldn't play with a satisfactory experience. While the initial cost of a decent PC is higher than it is with a console, the amount of money saved per purchase (assuming you buy the same number of games) coupled with the fact that peripherals are generally cheaper on the whole (a $20 keyboard and mouse combo meets the needs of all but a small percentage of the population), the whole PC vs. Console argument in terms of actual cost becomes a wash in the end.
People who go on about the high cost of PC gaming tend to ignore the fact that they are: 1) paying $59.99-$69.99 per controller (most have two or three), 2) are paying $39.99-$69.99 for a mic, 3) pay between $30-$60 a year for online access, 4) pay $10-$20 more for the same title, 5) pay significantly more for internal storage, and 6) they completely ignore the cost of their TV. If you factor in all the money you yourself have spent on console games, plus your peripherals, in addition to the $500+ you acknowledge spending on a console, and then finally add the cost of that 50" HDTV you've been bragging about to the sum of it all, I guarantee you that you've spent as much (if not more) money as I have on my PC with its extensive library of games.
