Gears of War 3 'Horde Command' DLC available now [update]
52
Gears of War 3's first major piece of DLC, "Horde Command Pack," has been temporarily delayed. Epic Games made the announcement on its forums, blaming a "technical issue" for the last-minute postponement.
"We have folks working around the clock to resolve this issue ASAP so you can all play and enjoy the Command Pack," Epic noted. "The Epic Games Community team will stick around and keep you posted with any further information."
Epic informs us that the current delay will not affect the launch plans for the second piece of DLC, "RAAM's Shadow," already scheduled for December.
Update: Less than a day, good on Epic. The "Horde Command Pack" is available now.
[Thanks, Dusty]

You know, I wished that more developers would be like Valve... but this isn't what I had in mind.

LOL at people buying a dlc that adds functionality that's already in the game. You know, like a silverback that fires rockets. I decided to buy no dlc for this game when they made weapon skins dlc instead of unlockable. And 4 dollars at that for most. Gears is getting traded for Skyrim anyways

I'm sorry I can't hear you over the three new maps, command center support strikes, and onyx guard decoy.

@Hyperion45 And all of it already on the disc. Awesome, right?
There must be some technical issues with generating the 100 KB file you will be downloading.

You "already on disc" haters better rage everytime you go to McDonald's and the pull it off the rack instead of making one for you fresh.
What world is this where waiting a long time for a large download is a good thing?
I mean, it's not like you have a right to anything the developer ever codes. And just because it's on the disc doesn't mean it's content they want you to have ("Hot Coffee" anyone?). You've always been at their whims for what content you get off the disc. I don't understand unlockables are any different than DLC anyway, since you can't just put the disc in your system and access the content. The difference is you pay for one in money and the other in time and practice. And if you are musically incompetent like me, games like Guitar Hero simply contain content I cannot access.

I like how you ignore all the other content in this DLC and just list an individual item like that's all it has. "The DLC only has 3 maps!" "The DLC only has silverback rockets!" Well surprise: the features add up. If you don't find the DLC worth the cost, fine, but that doesn't mean it's horrible since there are plenty of other people (like me) who find the cost worth it. Shock and awe time: your opinion isn't always golden fact that everyone should agree with.

Delays suck but not as much as game breaking bugs.

How hard is it to re-add content that you pulled out of the game and left on the disc?
This goes back to one of the things that annoys me most about all these anti-consumer practices. If you're going to try and screw over the customer financially, the *least* you can do is make sure that stuff works for the people that are willing to give you your extra money.
If Epic wants to pull content off the disc and charge for it then they're probably the one company I'm ok with that for. Having only spent ~$250 for the three Gears games and all DLC for the thousands of hours of gaming bliss I've gotten out of them is a great deal. I'm fine with giving them more money because I've gotten more fun per dollar out of them this gen than most games. But to pull a move like this where they leave 3 maps out of the main game for months (and the game badly needs more maps) and then not be able to get them to work in matchmaking when they put them back in, and then not be able to get the DLC even released at all because of "technical issues" is just bush league.
If you're going to pull stuff out of the game and leave it on the disc so you can charge us for it you'd better make damn sure it works 100% as well as it would have originally when you put it back in. Just like all the companies doing this online pass or new game content nonsense need to get their crap together and make sure that there are NO issues with legitimate customers redeeming their codes that you've forced them to use. You're getting a crapton of extra money out of this stuff. How about putting just a *teensy* bit of that into hiring someone that make sure it actually works?

I'm getting 40 dollars for gears3 so I'm pretty sure I got my $20 worth out of it therefore not bothered by it at all. Don't get me wrong, gears3 is an awesome game but I'm not allowing myself to be ripped off on such ridiculous dlc of which 90% of it was already on disk when the game shipped

There really needs to be some kind of BBB-approved study into finding out how much content is actually provided on-disc and how much is unlocked via DLC payment & unlock data later. Mind you, I'm talking about actual coded characters/maps, not the reference script to "allow" new DLC map/character/music data.
While I've had my suspicions almost as much as any other gamer out there, the rampant claims that nearly every title released now has such a gouging feature is getting crazy.

Not to mention that MMOs and the like make you download content for expansion packs whether you buy the expansion pack or not. Those are basically "unlocks" as well.
And then you got games like League of Legends or Farmville who just cut the middle man out and don't make you pay for the game, just the content.

I stand corrected on this one. It was a 1.5 M d/l, so I guess you were right about the unlock (though I do think the skins were part of that 1.5.) Oh well, new maps are cool so no regrets.

Well the silverback can fire rockets already in single player, the some of those weapon skins they want you tu buy I had already unlocked and used during the beta and the map names have been listed in the leaderboards since day one. If all that wasn't already on disk then at the very least they held it back for the sole purpose of selling it to their fans later, which in my opinion is kinda crap

You would think Epic would get the DLC out on time instead of counting all their Season Pass money. Think I'll just borrow this one and finish the fight. Season pass is b.s..

What I'm still unclear on is if the new characters and maps work in regular VS multiplayer. I really liked Blood Drive in Gears 2. I rarely play horde.

Ok, upon inspection on Xbox.com, the "pack" is only 1.42 MB big. Now unless a big update came with the pack today, all this shit was all on the disc after all. I. Am. Not. Pleased.

We've known it was on disc since the game launched. There have been videos of people playing these maps on gears 3 on youtube.
Games have on disc dlc now. Most AAA games do now. It's a bummer, but if you don't like it, don't buy it.

The DLC is on disc. Would you guys feel better if it was off disc? They still would have finshed it before the game dropped, charged you $10 for it. But because it isn't on disc, you'd have to actually wait for a big file to download instead of a 1mb unlock file.
The only difference between on disc dlc and any other near launch dlc is that it's more convenient for the user if it's on disc.
