Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City beta coming 'early next year' [Update: Scratch that!]
36
Update: Today, Capcom announced that there will not be a demo or public beta for Operation Raccoon City, prior to its launch. We misinterpreted a statement made by Mike Jones and apologize for the error. You can find the original post in full below.
Original post: Capcom's admittedly going out on a limb with Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City, its re-interpretation/re-telling of the events that transpired in Resident Evil 2 and 3. At just about every trade show this year, Capcom has brought out multiplayer builds of the squad-based shooter to get feedback and, at Capcom's Gamers Day 2011 event last week, producer Mike Jones revealed the public at large will get a stab at the game before its launch.
A public demo is planned for "early next year," Jones said, though he wouldn't offer exact details on the nature of the demo or when we should expect to be able to download it. That should give you plenty of time to come to grips with your new position as "the bad guy."

I just replayed all of the RE games a few days for Halloween. I'm so ready for this. I for one am looking forward to this one.

HUNK, Nemesis, and William? I might just have to give this a shot.
Know what this game needs, since it's not canon? Nemesis vs. Wesker. Give Wesker a reason to be there, and have the big lug's programming still recognize him as S.T.A.R.S. (if anyone ever even bothered to give him a whitelist in the first place). Now that's a fight I want to see.

Are the original 3 games ever going to be available on PSN and XBLA? RE1 scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and I'd really like to relive those awesome memories.

RE 1-3 are available on the PSN. They have been for several years here in the states.

I hope you can shoot and move in this game unlike most resident evil games

@Squawk Correct. I have a soft spot for the RE franchise, but would never say that prior ones (even 4) controlled "well". I played this at PAX and was honestly really impressed with the mobility - much more Gears-ey than RE5-ey. It shares its predecessor's over-the-top narration and impossibility, but there were some really innovative elements brought to the mix as well. "Turning into a zombie" was a neat mechanic, and the swift use of the offhand pistol for suppressive fire (which autotargets the nearest threat) made you feel like you actually had the training the fiction is based upon without requiring you to be a right thumbstick ninja.
IMO, the gamer enthusiasm for this title is a little lower than it deserves. I think it will be a solid title.

You can. That's been a selling point for this title.

My favorite RE character Hunk is in it? ( I was just him for Halloween in fact) plus A boss fight with G Birkins? This might have went into instabuy mode! I was worried before, but it sounds like they are trying for a lot of feedback from everyone. Hopefully it will tweak it into something at least awesome. Funny that the Tyrant is a pasted on Neca figure though ;)

I'VE ALREADY PLAYED THIS STORY AND YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.
Seriously, what is this? Did they not bother to go back and play Resi 2? NONE of this trash happens in the story. This is almost as bad as zombies with guns (i'm looking at you Resi 5).

They should have called this Resident Evil Gaiden. It would have been less confusing to people that don't "get it." But then people that don't "get" things will probably think it's a crossover with Ninja Gaiden.
Looks like Capcom is going to get around the little wrinkle of KILLING CIVILIANS by having the only "survivors" be characters like Leon and Claire.
I'm looking forward to the inevitable three-way battle between my squad, Leon and Nemesis. (Please let there be a raging battle between my squad, Leon and Nemesis!)

Oh dear... This looks... Ugh. What are they doing?
First Chris gets biceps larger than his head... Now Leon's voice is getting grislier with each appearance (much like Wesker whose voice has become more Snidely Whiplash)
What happened to horror? Do they not understand horror? Why all the flashy hollywood bullshit?
..Yeah I know this one isn't a horror game... but comon.. this is Saturday Morning quality story telling.. What's with the bad guys all having international accents? Are the badguys a team of America's worst enemies?

There's nothing wrong with Capcom taking this franchise into new directions as long as it's done right.
There are plenty of fans that have been clamoring for action controls like this one since day 1.
Then again, it isn't "survival horror" anymore and Capcom has indicated this by making it an offshoot title.
Now if they made RE into a card game or a cart racer, that's a different story. Card game....maybe. Cart racer? unforgivable.

You know what would be great, if Capcom can negotiate with Marvel to also use some of the Marvel characters in some of their non-fighting game franchises. Like have Wolverine or Cap or some other non-overly powerful Marvel hero in a Resident Evil or Devil May Cry game, even as DLC.

All you need to do is see the gameplay videos from each of their showings to know where this is going. The game to date, is not impressive, it's even less RE than 5 was, if that's possible.
As for "where's the horror", look at Hollywood. They're telling the world that "western horror" is gross-out close ups, rape scenes, and child violence.
2 out of those 3 things wont get published in a mainstream video game in America if it wants access to the highly lucrative Walmart market. What's that leave us with?
Maybe if I stick a Resident Evil sticker on my Dead Island disks I can pretend the series is headed in the right direction again.
