What do you do when your competition is busy undercutting your portable game offerings with $1 apps? If you're Nintendo and Capcom, your strategy is to aggressively run in the opposite direction (coincidentally, that is our favorite Resident Evil strategy). Next year's Resident Evil: Revelations is an impressive, console-esque experience that is notably as expensive as a console game. GameStop lists the 3DS title for $50, and that doesn't include the $10 Circle Pad attachment.
"Resident Evil Revelations is an all new Resident Evil title with over 20 hours of gameplay, and cutscenes beautifully rendered in fear-inducing 3D," a Capcom spokesperson told Kotaku via email. "A true console experience on a handheld device, Resident Evil Revelations is an epic title that offers both a single-player campaign for that classic survival horror gaming experience, and an additional RAID mode that can be played cooperatively or single player. To handle all of that data Resident Evil Revelations requires a 4GB cartridge, resulting in a higher price point."
The larger 4GB cartridge brings back (mostly bad) memories of cartridge-based consoles past: the Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64. Bigger experiences require bigger storage and, in turn, a bigger price tag. Bringing console-level experiences to portable platforms is one way of competing with the stampeding smartphone army, but even higher portable game prices is one revelation we can do without.

I'm sorry but it looks like I'm going to be passing on this game. Basically $60 to get the "best" experience for this game.
Didn't think we would see the day where a handheld game cost almost as much as a console game. I miss when they used to cost only $20. :(

Christ considering now at this point in the gaming industry I can get full console games cheaper than that price after a few week when a sale hits. No thanks capcom, nice try though.

If it is as good as Resident Evil 4 in an all new package, then I would pay $50 for it.

Uh, you COULD wait until there's a sale on it so you can pick it up for cheap...
Nah, that's too logical.

Generally, whatever time a company claims their game has, you take 30-50% off for real life experience. So console experience in so far of game play, but not time allotted to play.
I don't buy that the memory should make that much of a difference, either. I doubt they're using truly exotic memory for the games.
But, whatever, people will buy it at that price because they have no self-control and it will set the precedent and further screw up the mobile market.
Fact is, no portable game is a console experience. Zelda on 3DS very much felt like Zelda on 3DS. Sure the game had more substance than most portable games but I couldn't relax fully playing it because I'm still looking at a tiny screen.
Portable Gaming = Popcorn/Soda Pop
Console Gaming = Kobe Beef/Fine Wine
PC Gaming = Sex on the beach. Sure, you get sand up your ass, but when you do it right, it's wonderful.
I'll pick it up used or on sale. Whichever one meets my price point first.

Screen size only matters when trying to impress. I originally played Final Fantasy 7 on a 36" CRT (which was massive back in 97), then a 19 inch monitor on PC, then most recently on a PSP Go. It's the same regardless. Right now I jump on Gears3 between either a 46" LED TV or a 24" LCD monitor. Both play the same. Point being, if the experience isn't pulling you in beyond the frame of the screen, the game sucks. I don't remember playing The World Ends with You on a 2.5" screen, I just remember playing TWEWY and loving it. Same for Kingdom Hearts BbS. I don't recall squinting, I just remember the story and how awesome the game was.
So while I can't back that RE isn't worth $50 (not a huge fan of the series after 2/CV), I heavily disagree that a handheld experience can't be as engrossing as a console experience.

Gotta agree with Nintendo Tim... I'm totally stealing that last bit.
I can't say that I haven't had great console experiences on portables because the Monster Hunter games have entertained me for hours. But I'd still prefer them on a console and most of all a PC. And it's already hard for me to swallow the $40 pricepoint of 3DS games since I felt that the DS did so well with their $20-30 that I bought way more games than I would have at any other price. Simply put at $40 + I'm not really willing to take as much of a gamble as I am with a $20 game. I may or may not get this game, currently I'm starving for something to play with my 3DS because theres nothing out (I'm not buying the remakes of the 64 games that I've already bought 3-4x), but by the time this drops I'll have Super Mario World 3D or w/e its calld and Mario Kart 7 so maybe I'll hold off...

You know Mercenaries is a rehash of previous multi-player modes right? This is a full proper RE title.
You obviously frequent this site; Joystiq has praised it highly along with numerous other media outlets.
I paid $50 for RE4 way back on the GCN, and this deserves $50 just the same for me. It appears to have pretty much blurred the lines between a full console version and a console one.
Also, I don't understand why exactly I have been down-voted into oblivion. What's 10 bucks more if you were spending $40 to begin with? That's like, a trip to Subway or a matinee movie ticket.

$10 adds up fast. Not to mention it starts out, "Well I bought RE: Revelations for $50 on a 4GB card, this new game uses a 6GB card and seems worth the $60 they want."
Last year I decided to start buying all my games on sale. Since then I've gotten AC:Bro, Portal 2 (PC/PS3), Voxatron, Binding of Isaac, Alan Wake, CnC3+KW, The Sly Collection, Uncharted 1, and various other indie games all without paying full price. Most I got for $30 or less, with the indie ones being around $5-10 per bundle.
If you're impatient I can see spending more to get it sooner, but if you can wait, why not be wise and save some money? Like that old proverb, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

There's a big difference between Revelations and Mercenaries. If you've gotten a chance to try the REAL Revelations demos, then you'd see it plain as day that it's a lot different.

The circle pad isn't required to play the game, and given that it worked perfectly fine in The Mercenaries, I don't see why it "was supposed to" include an optional peripheral.

*sigh* The 3DS doesn't need a second circle pad at all. The features the 3DS has, such as the gyro and touch screen controls, are enough to create a large enough variety of control options. Not every shooter needs the same layout, especially for portable games like this one, which had some good controls on Mecenaries 3D.

Higher cartridge storage doesn't mean squat. Turok 1 on the Nintendo 64 used an 8mb cartridge and was AU$20 higher than any other game at launch, while RE2 and Conkers Bad Fur Day were on 64mb cartridges and was normal price when it came out. Go figure.

This is dumb, but the continued use of "games are only $1 on smart phones!" argument is probably just as stupid. Yeah, I can (and do) buy games on my phone for $1, but I also only play them for 15-20 minutes with very VERY few exceptions. Just because kids and people who don't know any better throw money at $1 trash doesn't mean proper portable games will cease to exist.
We made it through decades without the support of nearly everyone on the planet who can't understand games, we'll keep on doing it. And guess what? They're all going to die soon enough.

Uh, no. It likely costs about $1-2 if not much less to manufacture these chips and cover all costs. Using that excuse is a crock. And there's no way in hell that this game requires such a high cost.
I think what they're doing is testing the market. Game companies do this all the time, remember the first $60 game? Remember when Xbox Live started? People paid the price and now it's permanent, they tried the same thing on PC and that market refused to pay for essentially nothing and now it's free. It's the same thing and they have nothing to lose. If this game sells like crap, it doesn't matter because prices can always be reduced at a later time to spark sales, but if it's successful then they know that they can sell all future games at that price.

You're talking about a special form of ROM printed exclusively for Nintendo and Chinese black markets. These aren't USB memory sticks, they need to be manufactured to specifications from Capcom/Nintendo.
I believe the price is fair from their perspective, but no way am I advocating paying it.

@tvandlust You mean the $30 4gb memory card? Newsflash, you can put more than 3 game saves on those so I'm not exactly sure where you get off on saying it costs $10. In case you don't recall, the ps2 memory card was 64 mb. 4gb will hold an eternity of game saves.

Absolutely not.
Most Triple A titles aren't worth anywhere near the $60 they charge. I had planned on purchasing a 3DS just for this game, but that went straight out the window with this announcement.
How can they expect to compete when Steam is pumping out awesome deals on a daily basis for under $10?

@Bighouse Hate to knock you off your high horse, but I wasn't implying that the $10 overall price difference is what is making me not purchase these two together.
It's the fact that by purchasing this new $50 price scheme on day 1 supports the notion of that price point on the 3DS. By purchasing it right away you are telling developers "Yes, it's ok and I approve of you charging this much."
Think about everything you can get on Steam for $50.
