Most disappointing game of the year for me. It feels like a shoddily put together movie licensed game. I honestly enjoyed Aragorn's Quest more.

Well, yes and no!

War of the Ring was terrible.

Battle for Middle Earth was a step in the right direction, but with forced base locations, wasn't the best.

Battle for Middle Earth II was one of the best LotR games I ever played.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies BFME2 online was hell - Dwarves building walls close to my base and building towers within range, the Mirkwood archers' arrow upgrade that knocked down your troops.. oh god :(

I would disagree. I really liked Battle for Middle Earth 1 and the fixed base location just created a different type of metagame revolving around key encampments and settlements. I used to be moderately high on the ladder (top 10,000).

Not to mention, BFME had an awesome level editor and great community support. Most of my time online was spent playing online games. The only one bad thing about this game is that many times games wouldn't start or would go out of sync.

BFME is by far my favorite Lord of the Rings game and actually one of my favorite games ever.

@Cleric Go back to the shadow!

Tolkien is only boring if all you care about is battle and glory. No one will ever capture culture as well as Tolkien.

Without Tolkien we'd likely lack many of the fantasy stories and universes we have today. I can't see HOW you'd see Middle Earth as being boring, as his stories, though long, are masterpieces, and the world he created is beautiful.

Tolkin is a great linguist, but a terrible writer. He spent a lot of time going on and on about stuff that really didn't matter.

Gigantic LOTR fan speaking, and a firm-believer that The Two Towers game from 2002 was, in reality, really good.

Glad to see a not-so-harsh review, a friend and I were curious of its success.

@Shadowbender I had a lot of fun with The Two Towers movie game, but The Return of the King was even better. More levels, better levels at that, more characters, and lots of cool secrets. Most importantly, co-op!

@Shadowbender

I might very well get this game myself, I've picked up most of the LotR games in the past, and even played the really old DOS Dungeon Crawler(s). My only issue was that Steam never had a Four (three) pack for Co-Op, which is what I usually purchase, then send free copies to my friends.

Just minutes ago I found an Original Xbox version of Return of the King I had lying in one of my game rooms. Also owned a GBA version.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies

One thing dragging me back from a purchase was picking up Uncharted 3 last night. Later I'll definitely consider a purchase,

Yeah, I'd agree. I loved the gameplay of Return of the King.

Got this on OnLive for a buck with their promotion. Shouldn't complain considering that, really... but even an hour in the complaints in this review were already entering my mind. It feels like you're doing the same thing in small rooms over and over again.

It's helped immensely by the license, probably mostly because I care about the license anyway. The world is cool, the characters are interesting, etc... but for some reason I was expecting something slightly more unique than this. If you pull out the locales and races and stuff like giant Eagles you just know it'd be far more mediocre overall. It's still fun, but I am not sure how happy I would have been if I spent $50 on it.

I like this game. It's straight forward, but I don't care. It reminds me a lot of Champions of Norrath, which if I'm not mistaken is also a Snowblind game.

Oh CoN. It was everquest with none of the MMO and twice the tits. Seriously, jiggle city.

Really needs a new title set in the EQ 2 timeline.

I think this is the first joystiq review I've seen that's higher than a 3. I got this game yesterday and played a bit of it single player. The review doesn't mention what a hassle it is having to constantly repair weapons/armor (hell even my pants degraded, and not because I soiled them) but it's not a straight brawler so I don't mind some rpg elements. I agree with the review that this game will really shine playing local co-op, which is why I got it.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It reminds me of Dragon Age. If you liked that (particularly the first one) you will most probably enjoy this game, whether or not you're a Tolkien fan.

A real fan of Tolkien should be bothered by there being a freaking mage in the game, using magic. Only the six or so Maiar (the five wizards and Sauron, and possibly Tom Bombadil) present in Middle Earth at the time had that kind of power. And even then when they used it, it was nothing really flashy like in this game but much more subtle stuff with very rare exception.

Actually, that has always bothered me, but I accept it as a video game conceit.

The co-op aspect is what is interesting to me. I am always looking for games I can play with my boyfriend and my little brother. This might be a buy at a lower than 60$ price point.
