Syndicate's protagonist isn't a good guy
21
Syndicate's protagonist won't be helping Granny cross the street or rescuing any kittens stuck in trees -- well, okay, maybe there's some kind of holo-tree mission, we don't know. The point is that you won't be playing the classic hero in EA's reboot. He's a bad dude there to do bad things.
"You're certainly not playing a good guy," producer Ben O'Donnell told Videogamer. "You follow him in the narrative, and that narrative will obviously unfold in different ways. When you first start you're playing as this agent working for EuroCorp, and you do their wet work for them. You have this really high-end chip in your head, and you can do things to people that they really wouldn't want to do -- like commit suicide or change allegiance. You're by no means a good guy, you're there to do the dirty work."
However, if you're expecting the main character to have some great moral epiphany or change of heart, don't. This isn't a game about "good and evil," O'Donnell promises. Sounds fine to us, especially since we just got one of those.

That's one realistic looking woman-face.

@Brained I agree... I wonder if that's in-game? All the faces actually look extremely detailed. Of course, it all could break down with their animation system, but it sure looks good in stills.

The guy on the right looks like Brian Cox.

It probably seems "rad" and "edgy" to have a character who's not a good guy, but there's gotta be something to him we can identify with, otherwise the story just won't be interesting. It's possible that in fact he does have that something, but from the trailers so far, all I saw was just brutal violence because that's what the boss is paying for - that doesn't make the character appealing at all, at least not to me.

@TheShaper
inb4 criticisms of GTA's story-telling.
But he's right. making a main-character likable and making him a do-gooder are not exactly the same. The character can still be a cold-blooded murderer, yet retain some measure of humanity that makes him likable.
It all depends on the quality of the writing.

Not organizing a bake sale != murdering people just trying to go about their lives.
But yea, you can have a complete jerk of a character still have likable qualities. The easiest way is if the character has a personal code of honor, or if he thinks that what he is doing is all going to work out for the greater good (or his version)
Magneto for example, looking at any of his actions alone without knowledge makes him look like a terrorist. But if you know the entire story, he thinks he is helping the world.

So this is going to be like Liam Neeson after that plot twist in Unknown?

I'd like to see him rescue some kittens, and then murder the crap out of them. As long as Skrillex is bumping in the background, it will seem awesome.

I don't really think of Deus Ex: Human Revolution as a good vs evil game. It was about the conflict between groups who wanted unrestricted technological modifications to people's bodies, those who wanted limits and those who wanted no technological modifications.
All three groups had valid points and none of them could easily be placed in a "good" or "evil" category.

The main protagonist wasn't a good guy in the original Bullfrog game, either. In fact, you could take over quite a few people's minds (in the dozens), arm them, and have them fight your battles for you. There were never any moments of remorse written into the game.
You don't have to identify with the protagonist in every game. In fact, it's kind of cool once in a while to take a step completely outside of your normal choices and just go along for the ride. Not every prostitute needs a heart of gold to be interesting. :)
