Bring back more turn-based gameplay and I'd be content with saving the world over and over and over and over and over.

I think Joystiq snuck in my dream this morning because I recall dreaming about this. I'd still play jrpgs regardless of the "main objective", but I'll agree that some variation is nice (and such variation does exist already)... hence why I don't complain about this.

Good read again.

Once of the reasons I hate a lot of Fantasy books /games is the
ohh crap every 1000 years something bad happens and this farmer/hobo/army drop out saves the day.

@IronClawt Just off the top of my head: Chris Wooding - Ketty Jay series (admittedly a bit more towards steam punk), Fritz Leiber - Lankhmar Anthology, Steven Brust - Vlad Taltos series, Terry Pratchett - The whole goddamn Discworld series, Scott Lynch - The lies of Loke Lamora and its sequel, Roger Zelazny - Amber Chronicles, Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett - Good Omens, Neil Gaiman - Neverwhere, Anansi Boys, M is for Magic, Fragile things, Licia Troisi - Chronicles of Eartworld, Andrzej Sapkowski - The last wish, Joanne Bertin - The last dragonlord (though I would not recommend it).
Would it be safe to say that you just...don't read much at all?

This article is about 10 years late. Hell, it was late with Final Fantasy VII.

Granted, I enjoyed the game for the new found graphical power of the PSX...but it was pretty damn old to...AGAIN...save the planet (sorta in this case).

But JRPGs aren't alone. How many times is Prince Toadstool going to be kidnapped before she just kicks Bowser in the balls and stabs him in the head with a flag pole?

Then again...it's just a game.

Does it have to be "just a game" though? Maybe it's about time our perception of games floats a little bit more towards how we view movies (or at least SOME games...).

I don't like thinking of games as "just games", I feel there's quite possibly MORE potential to suck you in to the narrative than with movies.

Earthbound is great, but it falls into this trope too. :p

You get to know the cast very little, just "hey here's this person, enjoy this tidbit of story and never look back!" What at least saved that game was that it was amazingly charming because it was just so goofy and 4th wall breaking.

@Jennacide You should try playing MOTHER 3 then. It does to Earthbound what Earthbound (and it's predecessor) did to most other JRPGs. Granted you'll have to find a ROM and install the translation patch. But it is worth it.

I guess the OTHER way to invest people is to make you invested in the world and cast of characters. I want to save the universe in Mass Effect because Bioware did such a good job of making me care that Earth might be destroyed if I were to just hang out in my bunk with naked blue aliens all day.

@Rocket Raccoon

To clarify is that in, for instance Bioware, while I don't a significant other or family that I'm (necessarily) trying to save, and I don't actually care about my own personal safety (presumably, in story) all that's left for me to value is life forms within the galaxy and my desire to save it all.

I don't think I'm being clear at all. Epic self fail :(

I agree, saving the world over and over again in JRPG era is redundant, but the way mass effect, infamous 2(save the town), and resistance are a little more unique that i don't get that sensation that i've done this before this way.

It seems like every other comment I make is related to Dark Souls, but I think it's a great example of this. Although there is a grand ambition to achieve in the end, ultimately the story is about surviving and exploring the world. Each individual triumph greatly outweighs your shadowy final goal.

Also, see Deadly Premonition as a great example.

The best JRPGs are the ones that pair world saving with internal conflicts (one of the reasons I love FF7 so much, Xenosaga also fits that bill)

I'm not really sick of saving the world either, but I've got a question:

Is saving the world the best part of the game's ending for you? For me, it's always what happens specifically to the characters.

Yes, I tend to agree with you.

But there are rare cases, such as Chrono Trigger, where I actually cared about the world itself, after shepherding it through various ages (that, and many characters reach the end of their arcs before the ending... Lucca and Robo, for instance).

Its always the characters I care about, what happens to them, how they develop and what means most to them. Saving the world is bleh, its all about protecting what these characters feel is most important to them.

@Electrium One of the most satisfying things in Genkso Suikoden games is knowing what will the future hold for each of the 108 chars. Stupid Konami not making GSVI, but a PSP game :S

Apparently, Konami killed their Suikoden team:
http://www.siliconera.com/2011/08/08/suikoden-team-disbanded-tri-ace-hired-because-they-have-rpg-know-how/

They hired Tri-Ace instead, which isn't bad per se but it sucks that the Suikoden team is gone now.

Yes, i did know that. I interviewed George Richard a few months ago in a "Konami's Gamer Night" and said that those resources shifted to mobile and social gaming. Konami will be funding the game though., just not developing in house.

On a side note, its weird, except for Genso Suikoden IV which is just decent, the series is AMAZING and in this generation where there's an apathy towards JRPGs, the game could sell.

That's a good point. And I respect it. But on the other hand, isn't that the narrative structure of most Western games as well?
I love Mass Effect, and its wonderful cast, but at the end of the day you're a guy or girl shouldered with saving the world.
What about Borderlands? From errands for the local sawbones to saving the world.
inFamous? Zero to hero.
Assassin's Creed, from abductee strapped to a table to novice assassin tasked with saving the world.
Half-Life? From random bearded scientist to world-savior.
Gears of War? From jail cell to, yes, saving the world.

And, in an effort to make a point, the article neglects Japanese games like the very personal and intimate Catherine. Yes, it's an exception to the rule. But I'd argue that Red Dead Redemption (and most of Rockstar's catalogue) are the scarce exceptions in the West.

Even Catherine ends up being about saving Japan. But I agree, this is an issue of a lot of games in general. People buy into power fantasies, so that's what we continue to get.

Did you read the post? All of those games have save-the-wold plots, but they focus on the characters' personal journeys as well (Borderlands and Gears of War aside, the plot for those games aren't great anyway). That's what he's saying: make the plot more about the characters and less about saving the world.

I did, actually, read the post. Thanks for asking.

Let's take an example he mentions in the article: Lost Odyssey. The journey for this group isn't "because he feels like it." He does, in fact, have a very relatable and even tragic narrative as he deals with the passage of time, as well as a very personal reason to see the events through to the end.

Tales of Vesperia, however... got me there. ;)
