I'm sorry to hear this Maybe if it was free to play from the beginning it would of been more successful since the target audience is kids but we will never know.

They didn't get the conversions because the cost was too high.

They wanted between $120-$300 per year to play. That just isn't gonna happen. If their price was half that they may have converted a lot more parents into paying for their kids to have access.

@Ordeith Well, speaking as a parent that has 2 kids totally obsessed with LU, I am very sad for them about this. Actually, my son just this second found out about on the chat... sadness. However $10/month is a STEAL IMHO. There is absolutely nothing in the world I can think of that provides as much enjoyment for them (at least 30+ hours a month) for $10. That's the price of lunch with a drink at lots of places. That's a 1.5hour movie without any snacks. Thanks like 1-2 hours for a sitter!

Is this the first of the recent free to play MMOs to fail?

Can't think who would play this at all, but I assume it's children who don't have their parents' credit card details and do have their parents' more refined sense of value standing in the way of giving Mr Legos any money.

No, the game was never F2P. It just offered a free trial version where you could play up to a certain level.

F2P probably would have saved it.

To be fair this WAS heavily advertised...to LEGO fans. Nearly every LEGO set has a big advertisement for LEGO Universe on the side, advertisements in the back of instruction booklets, and loads of advertising in the official LEGO magazine. They even sent free copies of the game to select LEGO Magazine subscribers when the first reports of trouble were coming out.

That said, they obviously did little advertising apart from this, meaning casual and past fans of LEGO, or even those simply unfamiliar with LEGO but looking to try a new MMO, were unaware the game even existed.

The other problem lies in that the game simply doesn't capture the magic of LEGO building. Overall, it's a fairly boring and unexciting MMO. You'd be better off playing a standard MMO and getting your LEGO fix by playing around in LEGO Digital Designer, which is available for free on LEGO's site.

And please consider releasing a soundtrack for the game. The music is just amazing!!

On their 'f2p' attempt. I don't know if they could've done that any worse if they'd tried. I remember my little brother chomping at the bit to get at this game once he heard it'd gone free to play (and he is hardcore LEGO crazy, fan club, newsletter, pieces all over the floor, depressed stupor in his room as he broke his arm just before LEGO Land opened downtown the other week).

He got about two hours out of the first area where you're restricted to, then quit in disgust because he couldn't actually do anything. :/

I didn't think it would happen so quickly, but I saw (and commented in the beta) that a lot of stuff would have to change. They didn't, so here we are. :/

It was a nice idea for an MMORPG but it was simply too light on content and too restrictive.

You couldn't just build anything. You could only build in select areas with a limited selection of blocks. The UI for building was terrible. The main focus of the game was bland kill-10-boars PvE in only five zones.

Lego Universe should have been something like Minecraft.

Yeah, either f2p from the start or an even lower sub, but even then, the content was lite (although fun). The building was great, but Minecraft is a hard-to-beat contender in that field.

I felt they shoulda cross-promoted more. Maybe link up physical sets you buy in stores with in-game virtual codes for pieces/special figs. Maybe even a bit of a contest also advertised through it. It would have been a great promotion if they could have advertised some of their newer sets, like the Ninjaku one in-game and incorporated those elements inside; maybe new mini-games.

You know why they had problems converting anyone? YOU COULDN'T REMAP KEYS! Even better: NO INVERT MOUSE OPTION. Google it. Tons of threads all over the interwebs. I'd be playing it, and very likely paying for it, if it had those two "features". Pfft. "Features". Is it really a "feature" if it has existed in other games for 15+ years? Fail. Epic fail.

Thanks for being one of the many over-users of the words "epic" and "fail".

Also, I don't think that was why the MMO failed to do well. I'll admit, not having those options in an MMO (while it's obviously not a full-on, indepth MMO) is just bizarre, that would have absolutely nothing to do with it's success, or lack thereof.

I played through the LU Beta, and I have to admit, the simple inability to invert the mouse is what drove me to give up on the game.

Was it that the finished product was so lackluster? Now we will never know, both kids and adults alike.

I think it should have been FtP to begin with. Maybe also the demographic isn't right? This is more of a console crowd than a PC one?

I am sorry that they have lost their jobs, but I really wish there wasn't such a glut of releases in the gaming market. For some reason movie studios are able to survive, but for game development studios its just not the same.

I would bet that many gamers had no idea this game even existed in a free to play form, and even if they did, they probably wouldn't go out of their way to pay for it when so many other games take up time and money.

Definitely should have been F2P from the start. This game is specifically marketed to children who don't want to pay for these things, or whose parents do see it as worth it. Not to mention the huge amount of wasted potential. Considering the way Lego blocks work, this game could have had a unique Minecraft-esque destructible environment.

I played the beta, but not the retail release, and here's two of the glaring problems I would attribute to its failure.
1) Worst chat system ever conceived. Instead of banning specific words, they took the opposite approach: To create a directory of approved words you could use.
2) Gameplay was artificially inflated by progressive achievements. The worlds themselves were extremely small and the content was fairly lacking. You could blow through an entire world in 10 minutes. In order to extend playtime, they made a ton of insane progressive achievements. Like kill 5 of a specific enemy. Then kill 50 of that same enemy. Then kill 500 of that same enemy. Then kill 5000 of that same enemy. The problem was that there was only 5 spawns of that enemy you needed to kill in the entire world, and you were fighting off dozens of other players for those same spawns.
It was terrible.
I even was a good beta tester and reported all the bugs I came across, but the way they handled that system made me stop reporting bugs.
For every bug that was reported, you were sent an email thanking you for your bug submission. Every single one.

I played it day 1 and quit a week after purchasing and it was a serious let down. The Lego construction system was terrible, the chat system was the worst I have ever seen, and the combat was terrible. Mix that in with a serious lack of content and an insurmountable grind, and you have a failure on your hands.

Personally this comes as no big surprise.

I think the problem was that it wasn't actually F2P. It was a 1 zone demo with limited building features then you pay monthly.

I honestly believe this game could be a great success as a true F2P model, or even a proper hybrid model with F2P and subscription benefits.
But whoever planned out the "F2P" model with Lego Universe screwed up big time.

They need to sell this game to a company that knows how to do F2P properly like Perfect World Entertainment or Gamersfirst or ANYONE lol

I played this game about a month after it came out...good idea, but executed really poorly and catered to too young of folkein. I was really looking forward to building stuff, but that was probably the worst part of the game...It's too bad, because most Lego games (Loco, Island...) are pretty neat.

Hi Joystiq, yes this game, unknown to many, has been flushed. I myself have lost my job today. It is very unfortunate, but they simply couldnn't meet the numbers they needed for it to survive. For the rest of you, yes this game is currently live and playable. I ,for one, know it is an amazing game as I helped make it what it is today. Download the F2P version and see what you and the rest of the world will be missing. Farewell and playwell!

Well, the marketing was definitely bad (I too thought that it was still in development), but by the sounds of it, the content was terrible to begin with.

DC Universe Online went free to play, and they have had a literally overwhelming response because of it. Is it because DC is more popular than Lego? Maybe, but the marketing was so much better, and it seems the game has just been built better. I just think they should have put effort into creating something better.

Heck, if it was a Lego game that was similar to Minecraft but was also an MMO, that would have been awesome. Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

What Lego fans wanted from a Lego MMO: A LDD mutual sandbox with a Minecraft/Garrys mod style physics engine.

What Lego fans got: A Traveler's Tales game with added Kill 10 Boars quests and a limited version of LDD available in some areas.

Have to wonder if the designers were ill-served by the higherups and such. Can't really understand why they would add Ninjago of all things as a new zone when there was already a Ninja zone, and no true sci-fi zone.
