In the future would it be possible for a game company to use these sort of updates to connect a game to an individual console so the same game couldn't be resold to a different console?

It's probably possible, but there would be such a huge backlash. Most companies have figured out that project 10 dollar as full as full on digital distribution are the best ways to fight used sales.

They need to take a note from Pandora. Instead of trying to stop hackers with frimware updates and anti piracy bull, they should instead make it so easy to play the games (or cheap) that it inconveniences you to pirate them. Make the games $5 and downloadable and I'm sure everyone in the world would buy it.

@teeftwo under this logic just about every game/system should be cheap since xbox/ps3/psp/pc games update constantly.

i mean at this point what xbox 360 or ps3 game doesnt have a game update? bf3 on day one had a huge update for xbox 360...
i guess it was to fight those dirty pirates and had nothing to do with fixing the game or improving it

This was specifically to not let you play the game unless you had the firmware installed to stop piracy.

2nd paragraph. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/03/super-mario-3d-land-comes-with-new-3ds-firmware/

@teeftwo every company does it.

so they should devalue their product?

The gas station down the street gets robbed a few times they should lower the cost of gas down to $1.12 and sale all the candy for 25 cents so ppl will stop robbing them? That way the gas station will stop ppl from stealing and at the same time have less money in the cash register so they won't get robbed.

No think higher. Why do you steal a game? Cuz you don't want to spend $50 or $40 and you want a NEW game, not one from 2009 that's $10. If you make the game extremely cheap more people will buy it and you make more.

Take a look at TF2. The game is $10 and it's made more than enough money. Valve said it many times. Then they made it free and it made even more.

Spotify has shown a turn around in piracy b/c it makes it so convenient to get your music. For $60 a year you can listen unlimitedly and save your playlists to mobile phones. You no longer have to have the music on your HDD. The music loads so fast that you can just have a playlist or listen to new songs like it was a radio.

Piracy takes time. Find a way to reduce people's cost and time of buying new games and you will destroy piracy. That's one reason the Apple App store flourishes too. Most games are free or so cheap ($0.99) that you'd waste your time trying to jailbreak your phone for a few dollars in savings.

Does it take as much effort/time to update the 3DS like the PSP does?

I'm only asking since I don't have a 3DS myself.

@Bigduo209 no,it's pretty simple.
It's pretty quick compared to psp,xbox,ps3 and better than Dsi.

Glad to hear it. The join game button alone will make online play on the 3DS much, much better. A full messaging system is next, hopefully.

I'm assuming voice chat is too much to ask for, it seems to be a feature that you can't add in later. Hopefully individual games will support it in the future. RE: Mercenaries would be a thousand times better if I could actually communicate with my partner.

I could be wrong but I think one of the things being updated later this month is the addition of a messaging system with ability to send pictures and maybe even video.

To me, it seemed like all of the messaging wouldn't be integrated into the friends list but part of the new flipnote suite..."thing". I hope that's not the case, because not being able to message a friend in-game would be a colossal screw-up.

I honestly don't see why they can't create voip.
There may be some issues I haven't noticed yet.

The 3ds has 32 megabytes of ram reserved for the homescreen, webbrowser, and any other system components while in game.
That is as much ram as the original psp-1000.
I have known friends that got skype running on psp.
It might wouldn't be the best voip quality, but I think they can make a voip client that works in game using the system's ram.

This is a smart move by Nintendo. They need to focus more and more on bringing capabilities that their new smartphone competitors can't replicate.

I'm glad they're fixing the friend system to exactly what it should've been in the first place. Why would I even be interested in having a friends list if i couldn't easily interact with them? Looking forward to using this on some mario kart.
