We slept through the one marketing class we were forced to take back in college, so the advertising synergy Ubisoft is looking for by having famous athletes shill its latest Assassin's Creed game is lost on us. But then again, we imagine we're not the coveted assassin slash professional athlete demographic we assume Ubisoft is looking to reach with this.
The campaign showcases each athlete, featuring their professional statistics alongside their video game stats playing Assassins Creed.
"You don't need to be a league MVP to amass legendary status in Assassin's Creed Revelations," stated Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Ubisoft North America. "Leave Your Legacy is a call to action that challenges fans to bring their best when playing the game. Adrian Peterson, Derrick Rose and BJ Penn are star performers at the highest level of competition. Having athletes of this caliber engaged in this campaign highlights the impact of Ezio."
Peterson, heralded as one of the most elusive and powerful running backs in professional football is one of only five players to have ever amassed 3,000 rushing after his first two seasons in the league. He also holds the third highest average rushing yards per game in professional football history, joining the ranks of other legends, including Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. Upon being named as part of the campaign, Peterson stated, "As a gamer, to appear in a campaign alongside a legend like Ezio for Assassin's Creed Revelations is the ultimate honor."
Rose, already one of professional basketball's top stars was awarded the league's most valuable player in 2011, becoming the youngest player to ever win the award. Named the league's top rookie in 2009, Rose has led his team to the playoffs each year he's been in the league. "To be involved in something like Leave Your Legacy is amazing. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to play in Chicago, the city I grew up in, and I'm excited to share my interest in Assassin's Creed Revelations with all of the fans."
BJ Penn, a Mundial Jui Jitsu gold medal champion and a mixed martial arts world champion in two different weight classes, built his legendary status around his willingness to fight anyone regardless of their weight class. He is only the second mixed martial arts fighter to win titles in different weight classes. "I pride myself on the work I've put in to become one of the best fighters in mixed martial arts. A legend like Ezio uses a number of calculated attacks to overcome his enemies. Similarly, I approach each opponent to learn his weaknesses so I can focus on attacking the areas where they're most vulnerable."
In Assassin's Creed Revelations, master assassin Ezio walks in the footsteps of the legendary Altaïr on a journey of discovery and revelation. It is a perilous path – one that will take Ezio to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, where a growing army of Templars threatens to destabilize the region. Assassin's Creed Revelations is available in North America on November 15.
