Nothing's worse except maybe having to resolving an unknown technical issue in computer code or model...that just means it goes on and on and on until it gets fixed. I feel for you, nevertheless. -_-

It appears the advertising dollars reached the right departments!
Just wish they had some actual standards for their reviews on this site, because each game varies so greatly, there's no real foundation to know how/what each reviewer is basing everything on.

@coffeewithgames It seems that this actually base their reviews on actual opinion. They review games like a friend would review a game. If you're looking for corporate overlord intrusion, check out IGN - and be sure to have them tell you exactly what you are supposed to think, right down to how good the graphics are.

@Alterd Actually..read the review. They just keep talking about the game is more of the same (in a lot more words) yet it still gets such a great review. I played it and it IS more of the same...A LOT more of the same. Like 90% the same. At tops it should be a 3.5 due to lack of changing anything..the .5 for what it DID change. The game is STILL a spawn camp fest though because they keep forgetting to increase the map sizes and fix the spawn system

Is that like saying "ignore the problem, and it will go away"?
The problem is Joystiq has no review standards, like most sites.
One FPS can be labeled "generic", while another can be labeled "great".

Also, Joystiq has a history of allowing a poorly written, and not fact based, review(s) to be published.
When the editors are contacted about it, and comments left, nothing changes.

If it's just based on "somebody's opinion", a hobo on the street could be payed to write a whim; but I think there should be video game review standards, starting with the amount of time the reviewer played the game.

I'm so sick of this whole, "ooh the game I hate on got a great score, the reviewer was paid off!" Jesus, you don't think maybe he actually really enjoyed the game? You think a franchise that breaks sells records everytime has got to provide some sort of enjoyment for their fans? Since you believe that this site is paid off, and everyone else believes every other site is paid off, what freaking site should we all go to read unbiased, unpaid for reviews????

It's not even hate on this game. I have enjoyed both Call of Duty games I have played(WaW and BO), and MW3 should be arriving today for me.
I just don't understand the reviews for the FPS genre these days. It seems if the game is "big" and has a lot of hype, like BF3 and MW3, they can be labeled "great". If it's a smaller game, not with a lot of hype, it can be nitpicked to death and that is "A-okay".

@coffeewithgames I'm not sure what you want from a review. Do you want the reviewer's opinion? Would you prefer the entire review to be a list of comparisons to other games? Perhaps a feature list would be more to your liking?

Or perhaps you ought to understand that a reviewer's job is not to obsessively (and impossibly) provide you with a set of objective standards when discussing exclusively subjective material. A reviewer's job, end-stop, is to tell you what they thought of the game and why.

As for "badly-written," most of the 'stiq's reviewers write in a conversational, straightforward way, touching on their positive and negative reactions to the game and providing an overall glimpse of how much they did or did not enjoy their experience. I've never seen a reviewer on here that did not flow well from one thought to the next and backed up their point, which is what good writing really is, at the core of it. It's not making sure they don't nitpick your precious title too much, or let a bigger game get by with a score. It's not obsessively making sure your review is in line with your every previous appraisal of other games. It's telling me, in an entertaining or engaging way, what you thought of the game.

Past that, it's just fluff.

No, the reviewers opinion is just fine, as long as it's based on facts from the game/game-play, and not just ignorance as happens in some instances.
Complaining about controls, but not mentioning that controls can be adjusted for example. Saying a game was released in the 90s, so a new game with the same name, but that is totally remade(totally different levels, and totally different multiplayer) doesn't deserve a full review, but just a "feature list" is also odd.

"Or perhaps you ought to understand that a reviewer's job is not to obsessively (and impossibly) provide you with a set of objective standards when discussing exclusively subjective material. A reviewer's job, end-stop, is to tell you what they thought of the game and why."
Again, kind of goes with my idea of seeing reviews state things like, "Controls suck!", but failing to even mention there are different control options.

"As for "badly-written," most of the 'stiq's reviewers write in a conversational, straightforward way, touching on their positive and negative reactions to the game and providing an overall glimpse of how much they did or did not enjoy their experience. I could provide multiple examples from one review that the reviewer did not back up his claims very well.

"It's not making sure they don't nitpick your precious title too much, or let a bigger game get by with a score. It's not obsessively making sure your review is in line with your every previous appraisal of other games. It's telling me, in an entertaining or engaging way, what you thought of the game."

Again, I'm not saying it's not based on "opinions" at all, but when they are poorly formed opinions that leave out information because the reviewer either didn't know or didn't try other options that could have made a difference, I think there's a problem.
It has nothing to do with any precious title of mine getting a low score, or bigger game getting a great score.

Got it during the midnight launch, it's about what I expected. Although I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't take any tech from Black Ops, like bot support off and online. At least it allows splitscreen online.

I think I'll be enjoying the multiplayer, it's gonna sting doing the rounds all over again and trying to get used to all the new maps and getting the better layouts, but I think with that in mind, this should be my last CoD, I definitely feel the fatigue of familiarity.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing that games stay the same..but please don't go on about how new the experience is..you just sound pathetic and fake.

I've heard that for previous CoD games that's actually the case. They fly reviewers down to play in a studio, watching over their shoulder the whole time. Then, the reviews are approved by Activision before they're published. If you don't play by their rules, you can say goodbye to review copies.

I wouldn't doubt something similar happened here.

After reading the review again, it feels like they are trying to sell the game. The past couple of reviews were pretty good and in depth, but this is pretty suckish. I feel like it should be titled: "Look how awesome MW3 is!".

@Mr Hett And don't forget, the online community appear to have been "Not allowed" to review the game until after it came out. I mean come on, MW3 is going to be the biggest release of 2011 and sites like Joystiq, Eurogamer and IGN don't review it until after it came out? Sounds dodgy to me....

You're correct.

Activision, among other publishers, but mainly Activision is KNOWN for paying for reviews.

They revise and edit reviews and pay websites to give positive reviews and never mention negatives.

It's pathetic and so is Joystiq on this account.

@Slomoshun Well regardless of joystiqs review, and all the other reviews this game will still sell over 10 million copies maybe even 20+million like Blops did.If joystiq hated on it, there would be a whole bunch of other people yelling about how joystiq is just a CoD hater. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I agree CoDs aren't innovative and nothing new but if people keep buying it and activision is sleeping on their mattresses filled with money, why fix something that is apparently not broken. Money talks, more specifically sales talk. I feel like Joystiq has to give it a good review whether Activision paid them so they aren't known as the people who hate what is going to be the highest selling game of this year.

woah, easy up guys... theres a fine line between calling out a review with the time spent playing it (Brink) and one where we start calling people "pathetic and fake" for having an opinion.

Like alot of other people i left during MW2 for greener pastures, but i never got why we hate the series with every once of our being. Its just a game. I cannot begin to describe just how ridiculously pathetic YOU all sound. Just let it go.

Um... you do know that about two-thirds of the industry(gaming and electronic)have been doing this for decades now, right?
Developers/publishers restricting review magazines and sites from leaking early reviews or understating flaws upon publishing to help advertising dollars and revenue. Also -- what(profitable)company in their right mind would welcome harsh reviews and brash comments in the midst of selling a game easily taking a million or more to develop?
That's just plain stupid. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking every gaming site and/or review featured isn't biased to some extend(*coughIGNcough*); but with anything in life, simply read with a bit of skepticism or knowledge of that person's opinion to weigh your own judgment & experience with the product.

I'm not a MW fan by any means... Hell, I played MW2 for the story, one hour of multiplayer and was done with it. But as an earlier comment mentioned -- it's just a game. :\ Ease up, people.
