There's no doubt that the Saints Row franchise is a big deal for THQ -- especially now, since the publisher just killed one of its biggest -- and it looks like work on a fourth entry is already underway. THQ's Executive VP of Bean Spilling, Danny Bilson, dropped the news during a video interview with G4, saying that he thinks the next Saints Row game will be much wilder than the third. Dildo bats that shoot dildo bats full of tiny dildo confetti, anyone?
@Copybass Ah jeez zombies I never doubted its fun, nor will I deny that it is stylistically different, but it is essentially a GTA clone. I won't say that Volition could/should do better, but I do think they could do more.
Fun is something you have. It's not something a game is. Saying a game is fun or isn't fun is your personal take, not something intrinsic in the game. I personally had a ton of fun with GTA4, while I have no fun at all with the SR series.
No, but I dislike playing a game that brings back all of the crap that bogged down the GTA series prior to 4, then ramps that all up to the Nth FOR TEH LULZ LMAO, then rolls around in it like an epileptic releasing its bowels.
SR is nothing like GTA unless by that you mean it's an open world game where you run around and do shit. If that's the definition of "just like it" then hell, you suck at games.
SR is everything GTA wishes it could be but can't because it has some bullshit sense of pride and pretense of "story". The only thing GTA has over SR at this point is that graphically it's a better game. I will definitely give RockStar credit on that one. Then again on the PC (where I play games) it's an unoptimized piece that is in severe need of a recode. Of course then again so is SR2 so lol.
@Copybass Ah jeez zombies I'm pretty thoroughly convinced at this point that it's impossible to debate preferences here on Joystiq without people being totally snide about it.
But I still think SR qualifies as a GTA clone - and that "clone" is not a dirty word, as some of you seem to think it is. I am for some reason reminded of the term "roguelike" being used for games that are tangentially related to but also so far separated from Rogue that you wonder why the term persists...
And I begin to wonder what my point is, ultimately.
Absolutely nothing against the Saints Row franchise, but I'm hoping "Saints Row 4" is a code name for "Newest Red Faction Open World Game." I was thoroughly disappointed by Armageddon but Guerrilla is still one of my favourite games of the last several years. Tears emerge from my eyeballs every time I think of THQ cancelling that series.
@darkinchworm I'm not sure what your definition of clone is, but just because they are both sandbox games that deal largely with street life doesn't make it a clone.
Admittedly the original Saints Row was a lot like a GTA game, but like "Alive" vs "Plush," SR has grown beyond it's similarities. I doubt you'd ever confuse a SR game with a GTA game now.
@StrangeDNA I'm sorry that you've apparently fallen victim to the flawed comment system. I'm not criticizing Saints Row simply for following a genre trend that GTA III largely established - the propagation of games within a specific genre can be a very good thing - but I, in my own inchworm opinion, don't feel that SR does enough to separate itself from the pack. All I see it for is a game that plays very similarly to GTA and contains a lot of hit-or-miss crude humor.
And I must shamefully admit I have no idea what you are alluding to when comparing Alive and Plush.
Perhaps they will take Yahtzee up on his idea for the game "Mankind Has Yet to Recognize My Genius" and make it about a Batman Villain wreaking havoc on a city and ultimately being taken in by Batman, only to escape for next week's antics....
I get why people like the way this series is going. They have opted to delivery the fun open world sandbox in face of GTA's more "serious" look and feel. I understand that, I do ...
... I was a fan of the original SR. Impressed by its balance of fun, story and genre elements, but with 2 ... and looking like even more so with 3, they are going off the rails big time and either this excites you or turns you off. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.
And here I was hoping Volition would finally get to work on a Freespace 3 that used Red Faction's geomod system to create destructible spaceships and asteroids.
Just imagine blowing a hole in the side of a battleship, and flying through the hole.
