So the best selling game would be a Call of duty dancing game?

Why is this news? We get it, call of duty sells to the masses.

Seems every other news post is about call of duty sales figures.

@halcyoned That tends to happen when you're reading video game news on Call of Duty release day. When the Vita releases, I dare say there will be a lot of news stories about that. Just the way it goes.

Sam, it seems that in this modern age of video games, the current best selling video game franchise appears to be 'Call of Duty'. Many people are extremely shocked and surprised. Even analysts say that nobody saw this coming.

Call of Duty still has a way to go before it's the best-selling franchise.

From Wikipedia:

Wii Sports (76.76 million)
Mario Kart Wii (28.23 million)
Wii Sports Resort (27.68 million)
Wii Play (27.38 million)
Wii Fit (22.61 million)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (21.94 million)

Though I'm constantly told that people only buy Wiis for Wii Sports and don't buy any other games for it.

dude wii sports was packed in with the console. 78 million people own it because that's how many people bought a Wii. They didn't buy the game and just so happen to get a console included.

also On August 3, 2011, Activision confirmed that CoDblops had sold over 25 million copies worldwide. so it doesn't really have that much farther to go.

I actually remember when Capcom and Square-Enix were the ones who had a death grip on the industry. Now they can't even get their foot in the door of the top 10. I think this says a lot about their business practices... and the quality of their products. Then again, if it were those two factors, MW3 wouldn't even be on the map.

You can dislike Kotick on a personal level (even though you've never met him and he could give a shit what you think because, well, he's a successful millionaire and you're not even close) but knocking Call of Duty as a non-quality product is even more moronic. The gameplay is tight, the production values are high, and while they're not the prettiest around the graphics aren't bad either.

So he confused quality (of which it's hard to argue against, CoD is a highly polished product) with personal taste (of which I would agree with him as I feel CoD, at least in this style, has now outlived its stay) and you now feel the need to insult his level of income (something you have no real knowledge of), somehow dredge up Bobby Kottick (despite him not mentioning Bobby at all) and then only give a dickish image of Kottick as an out of touch millionare that doesn't care what people think of him.

I mean, sure, feel free to correct him and even state your own opinion, but honestly, is there a need to just lay into a guy over something so trivial?

You wanna go there? Ok, let's dance. Bobby Kotick is a monster who tears apart entire studios seeking to remove any resistance to his demands of taking a single series and driving it into the ground year after year, with barely any patches and updates that you don't have to pay out the nose for.

In fact, he took Blizzard over, stating it was a "merger", made Mike Morhaime the number 4, then placed 3 of his own yes men above him, thereby destroying any and all quality of the original great known as Blizzard, much in the way EA tossed Bioware into a vat of acid and picked up the melted remains with tongs.

To be quite frank, I do somewhat enjoy the Call of Duty series, but it's so old, so stale, and it's effect so profound in trying to destroy dedicated servers, all in the name of "achievements and stats", which are more important than fun and playing as a team, and outrageously overpriced DLC, and denial of mod tools so the community can't create their own maps and mods, thereby destroying the longevity of the product, I simply can no longer stand behind it.

You know what? I am a part of the Tribes: Ascend beta. The game that lets you fly around with jet packs and shoot people with explosive disks. Whilst it's not the spitting image of Tribes, it's so refreshing, so fun, so fast paced it doesn't need to cram 16 people in a tiny little box just to be fun. It's the most polished beta I have ever been a part of, it's engaging, exciting, and it's going to be free-to-play, rather than "ok, you gave us $60, now give us $15 more for 5 maps, 2 or 3 being complete rehashes of old maps".

It may not have Dedicated Servers, and it might not have Mod Tools, but dammit, at least it's doing something different, and worth the price of admission and so much more: COMPLETELY. FREE.

@Hoops - I'm not surprised by the lack of Portal 2 because it's primarily a PC title that has likely sold most of its copies on that platform through Steam.

NPD only tracks retail sales.

HeartGold/SoulSilver have been out for a year longer, so naturally their sales are quite a bit higher. The period mentioned isn't January - September 2011; it's Jaunary /2010/ to September /2011/.

@RealityCheck2011 It's top 5 and only on a single console. Now compare the numbers to...well, almost every multi-platform game that came out in that same time period. I'd say it did quite well.

RealityCheck2007: Halo hasn't been the top selling FPS since Halo 2. CoD has been outselling it since CoD4 and Halo 3 came out at the same time.

Still mighty impressive numbers, especially considering it was the second highest selling console exclusive (behind Just Dance for the Wii which has a broader appeal and larger instal base to work with).

These are tracked by NPD so they are US sales and likely don't even track Minecraft's online distribution model.
