The saddest part of Mega64's latest satirical jab at the gaming industry isn't the fact that Modern Game Journalism: The Movie will never be made into a real film, but rather just how startlingly accurate and true-to-life its depiction of review backlash is.
Seriously, this may be a hilarious poke at the gaming industry for you at home, but it's the equivalent of an ultra-gritty war drama for us in the field. Once he saw this trailer, our managing editor Justin McElroy had what we can only assume was a post-traumatic episode, at which point he had to be horse-tranquilized. It, uhm, it was a bad scene.

Seriously I am sick number and star scores--I just want the review.
The value people put in the Metacritic average upsets me; I would much rather see there be a Rotten Tomatoes for video games where the score is comprised of the percentage of positive reviews for a title. At least then certain numbers have a different weight to them: it's less "80 Metacritic score--mediocre game" and more "80% of critics liked this-- sounds good."
On a side note: As someone who whole-heartily loves Uncharted 3 and thinks it deserves all its crazy praise--it really upset me when fans lost their shit when an occasional 8 came up. This video made me laugh.

I totally agree. Metacritic and Gamerankings are ruining games.... Uncharted 3 is a fantastic game, but people get mad at reviews not because of the opinion, but rather the score.
I hate scores, why can't reviews be opinion based, without dropping a number or stars at the end.
Also I never understood why people got mad at the 8 score.
I would have gotten mad at the 5, because I found that review poorly written and it seemed like the reviewer had alot of angst against the game

There used to be, but it was pretty pointless; a significant majority of reviewers agreed on whether a game was "bad" or "good", but differed in how much they did/didn't enjoy it, so there wasn't a big spread of RT scores.
Games are different beasts than movies, and they're often judged differently. A game may get credit for being playable but not enjoyable -- movies don't have this trouble; very rarely will a movie be completely broken and unable to be viewed.
I think that, for games, the best way of making a legitimate MC score would be for a site to conform to a metacritic standard, defined scoring system. If a review didn't post this standard, the review wouldn't be attached to a given game. The metacritic standard could be something inbetween the ridiculous, fine granularity that many sites still adhere to, and a simple binary "good/bad" review. Stars are a good start; they've worked for movies for a long time. Then we wouldn't have as much of a problem with many sites treating the bottom 60% of a scale to various degrees of "bad" -- that could all be in the 1 or 2 star range.

I think Rottentomatoes already tried having a video game section. It was terrible because nearly every game had a VERY high rating. Every game was a red tomato.

@Eniko I agree. The star system gives a much more accurate review. What is the difference between a 5/10 and a 6/10? Seriously!

I started crying because it was so funny... but then I kept on crying because it was so true. Then I realized it's only a game, and went to get my double-barreled shotgun with electric buck shot.

I was looking forward to this movie. But then this trailer gave too many spoilers.
I mean watch the end of the trailer: It's obvious the main character dies! No point in sitting at a dark theater for 2-3 hours and wonder what happened to the poor sap...

It's hard to do an objective review of something that's very 'subjective'. Games are not like movies, they're interactive and everyone's experience will differ depending on their playing style.
So I wouldn't read too much into review scores beyond the graphics and presentation. Gameplay is a personal thing. The actual review is also not so important, we just want info on game features.
As for the "trailer", hilarious. Shame it won't convince people to stop bitchin' about scores.

And in customary form, everyone once again misuses the term "journalism" when discussing game criticism...which is one of a great many reasons that game writers are not taken seriously, nor are they "journalists." They're glorified copy writers, complicit marketing pawns to game publishers and nothing more.
