Americans love Mario and friends as much as anyone else, but it really says something about Japan's devotion to their Italian mascot when his new 3DS game manages to outsell both Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 by a fairly massive gap.
For the week ending November 6, Super Mario 3D Land sold 343,492 units in Japan, outselling its closest competition by over 200,000 units, earning the No. 1 slot on Media Create's sales charts. Uncharted 3 came in second with 124,989 units sold, and Battlefield 3 slotted in right beneath it at 123,379, scientifically proving that the Tanooki Suit is a powerful psychoactive monetary aphrodisiac.

@The Cole Train That girl looks very young. More like "have a seat over here, Reggie."

@The Cole Train - Mario is flashing the shocker, which is /really/ weird, all things considered...

Well outselling Battlefield is no surprise. WE know the Japanese gamers don't care for the FPSs. I don't know how they feel about Uncharted. They would probably like it better if it starred Lara Croft though....

In Japan MAG is huge. If you ever play Ravens around a certain time all you'll hear is Japanese. Sometimes as a SVER I'll get a squad full of Japanese people.

I'm more surprised that U3 and BF3 sold as well as they did. Neither of them strike me as something tailored for the Japanese market.

I was going to point this out. First/third-person shooters aren't nearly as big a deal in Japan as they are here.

It's not exactly surprising that a massive japanese franchise outsold american games... In japan...

It is the Nintendo flavor.
Nintendo is pretty good at release games that most people can enjoy, in any part of the world, without screwing the game's formula.
Not many other gaming companies have done that.

Isn't that pretty low for a Mario game?

Game is only on a newly launched platform and the sales count is only for Japan.
No, it is not low for that.

This game will continue to sell well at its current price for the entire life of the console, just as Mario Kart DS did, and as I suspect, Mario Kart 3DS will.

My Japanese import should be in my hands tomorrow so I'm hoping to finish all the other new games I have before Mario takes over my life.

Congrats for Nintendo, with the way the company had so many losses and all, its nice to see a bright spot!

Anyone else think that Mario looks kinda creepy in this picture? like, if a kid went up to him he would probably start screaming and running to his mom...no? maybe?

I can't believe Joystiq actually mentioned Japanese sales in the actual article. Usually they write about something totally unrelated.

Wait...Mario sells a lot? On a handheld? In Japan? *Head Explodes*
The real story is that BF3 sold more than 10 units. We know the Japanese like some FPS, but a western gaijin FPS??? Did they replace all of the voices with pokemon sounds?
That would actually be a great mod now that I think about it.

Been playing it all day. It's pretty damn good, if a bit short.
I really wish they added some simple stuff to increase replay value, like time attack and score leaderboards.
