I agree... My wallet is still smoking from all the recent purchases. I'll pick this up when it's on the shelf for 20-30 $

@youngoz Really? why not just NOT pick it up? it seems like a terrible game, and this is an incredible year for gaming: Skyrim, Forza 4, Uncharted 3, Gears 3, Super Mario 3D Land, Skyward sword, Sonic generations, Driver: San Francisco, Halo anniversary, arkham city, disgaea 4. With all these amazing games, there's just no excuse to buy crap at any price, no matter what systems you own (so long as you don't JUST have a wii of course).

If you want it that bad, rent it first at the Redbox. Don't be an idiot and blow money on this game.

not surprising :/ it looked boring and the demo was just okay and not too exciting.

also, I want to play Shift 2, but since Shift 1 was also great, should I get both and play the first game first?

@aray48 there's never been a point in playing racing games sequentially, the only time you should ever not just go for the most recent is when the predecessor is better, and I haven't seen anyone saying that Shift was better than Shift 2.

Glad to hear I won't be missing anything by skipping this. EA had an enjoyable arcade racer in NFS: Most Wanted several years back and has come nowhere close to replicating it since. I do all my racing with Codemasters or GT5 now.

What other arcade racers from the last year are better? I loved Hot Pursuit, but off the top of my head the only other I can think of is Driver SF and I've not tried it yet. Is it really worth my time, are there other good ones I can sink my teeth into if I pass this up?

@Oddgirl I've heard nothing but good things about the new Driver. I don't think it would be a bad purchase, myself, but maybe with a price drop. Too many other games out right now. A price drop may be eminent, saw it on sale at walmart for like $29 the other day..

Driver: San Francisco is great.

It has a cheesy-fun story, and a Burnout Paradise feel.

Unlike Paradise, however, navigating the open world isn't a chore. Beyond all the fun gameplay applications it offers, the "shift" mechanic lets you get anywhere in a snap.

The cars are awesome. The cops are a-holes. Its everything Driver should be.

How would you compare the full game to the demo? I feel like the demo was too limited to actually show the game's full potential, and the last level available was infuriating.

I found the demo to be AMAZINGLY FUN........well...the 2nd half at least with the avalanche. This wasn't a buy for me (due to Forza 4)....but.....i might get curious during that early year drought we usually get (except for the fact in 2012 mass effect 3, soul calibur 5, ninja gaiden 3, tomb radier, max payne 3, and others are expected 1st and 2nd Quarter of 2012).

@Mr Esc is the namesarcasm is my I believe it has more to do with the developer. Criterion is the great developer that made burnout and hot pursuit, but black box did this one. I've never heard of them making a great game, tbh.

Hot Pursuit was good when it was actually hot pursuit. The stupid preview races and quick responses really killed it for me. I always liked NFS games like Most Wanted and Carbon. Not to mention Underground. It's a shame a developer can't just do Hot Pursuit right or even make a NFS: Burnout mash up.

I would've loved if they snatched up BlackRockStudios(the devs behind SPLIT/SECOND)before Disney kicked'em to the curb. Then, we really would've had a good racing game.
Hell, even a merger with Criterion would've been sick. Wasted opportunity.

Speak for yourself. I'm a big fan of both series and found their take on Hot Pursuit to be pretty awesome. On top of that it felt pretty much just like what you described, NFS+Burnout.

So actually, I'm curious, what were your issues with the game?

I feel the same way. Though I've been playing the series since the beginning and stopped with Hot Pursuit 2. Never came back until now with the newest Hot Pursuit because it feels like the NFS I grew up with.

@WiredKnight My issues were with the preview and quick response races. Hot Pursuit is just that, hot pursuit. When I have to slog through boring timed races and races where bumping into something hurts my time, that's just not fun. It felt like they were artificallly extending the game instead of actually looking at what's fun.

like so many people have said before, you probably shouldn't base your buying decisions on reviews. i believe they should only be viewed as opinions of a final product, because that's essentially what they are. you could call them "professional" opinions if you want, but reviews are still just reflections on the reviewer's personal experiences with the product. i'm not a very big pre-order guy, but i know what kinds of games i like. most people will probably think i'm crazy for pre-ordering Darksiders and WH40K: Space Marine, but i like Joe Mad's art, and i love the WH40K universe, so i don't feel like i wasted money by paying full price for those games. even though they didn't review all that well, i still enjoyed the holy hell out of both of them.

in short, if you think you'll like a game and you're excited about it, go with your gut and pay full price for it and support the devs. if you're hesitant about it but still want to check it out, wait a couple weeks after release for a price drop or just gamefly it.

Give me an update to "Need for Speed: High Stakes" (aka, the best game in the series) and I'll be happy. Modernize the back end stuff so that it'll run on modern systems without major hacking, update the sound and graphics to a semi-modern standard (say, the standard of 2 years ago to allow for the widest audience to have a great experience - no need to go bleeding edge), but LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE ALONE! (map layouts, car selection, the simple car upgrade & tuning system, the physics, the tournament structure, the race styles, etc...)

There already was a Hot Pursuit II - the recent Hot Pursuit was actually Hot Pursuit III... (well, "Need for Speed XVI: Hot Pursuit III", to give it a proper name :)

@The Ogre

I would rather call it "Need for Speed XV: Hot Pursuit III"... I wouldn't count "Nitro" as part of the NFS series, but rather a side project that doesn't deserve a number. Also, it makes more sense as 15 is divisible by 3, as is the number of every other police-themed NFS so far - 3 (HP), 6 (HP2), 9 (MW), 12 (UC)... [geekness intended] :D

I loved last year's Hot Pursuit to death, which is why when the itch for more came around, I began following this game. Shame the demo just didn't do anything for me. This one's off the list for good. I'll be hoping for an HP2 now.

You mean, you'll be hoping for an HP4... See the thread 2 posts above :)

I also love the Hot Pursuit series, but I'm pretty happy with HP3, so I can wait. At the rate new NFS titles are coming out, I would expect "Need for Speed XXIV: Hot Pursuit IV" to be out in a few years time :)

Need for Speed: Underground was the last game, for me, that EA Black Box did.

I'm not a fan of skate boarding games, so I wasnt fond of Skate. Though it is my second favourite, behind Tony hawk Pro Skater 2.

I'm not a gearhead gamer but a coast to coast chase would be just plain fun, oh well it's not like I don't already have a huge stack of triple A titles to slog through.

Sometimes being a gamer feels like a job.
