"There's nothing like this game. In fact, I'm not sure there should be anything like this game. There's no concern for taste, no concern for morals -- it's all about the fun factor." Sounds kind of like Duke Nukem forever, if Duke Nukem Forever was good.

@CoconutSkittle Bulletstorm and Saints Row 3 are the modern equivalents of Duke Nukem.

Duke Nukem Forever was 2001's Duke Nukem game.

lol wut? Bulletstorm was pretty goddamned awesome. I hadn't laughed that much while playing a game since, well, probably Duke Nukem 3d. The first time I literally screwed a man to the wall and watched him spin until his body flew apart I nearly lost it.

It NEVER took itself too seriously - I applaud a game that has no pretense.

Hell it was more Duke than Duke 4ever.

I remember when the first game got dirty looks for being a GTA knock-off in hopes of cashing in when no GTA was around.

And now, the series has evolved into it's own clusterf*ck of fantastic nonsense.

I'm glad we gave it a chance. Can't wait to play this.

The first game was also just one of many games coming out during the sandbox boom too. That it was taking on the contemporary, big-city, car-jacking criminal thing as well, didn't do it any favors when so many people were tired of me-toos.

That it has ended up being more than that is a great thing though.

GTA IV sucked the fun out the GTA Series (Its taking a serious turn)

SR3 seems to add more fun. (It taking an even more goofy turn)

Ive never played a SR game before, but im thinking of picking it up.

GTA IV left me with a very sour taste and because of that i havnt played Red Dead yet.

@McPo definitely recommend it. i at first thought it was just mindless shooting a majority of the time, but i was wrong... it's fantastic mindless shooting and headsmashing fun!

the only downside to this would be.... not that many interesting NPCs roaming about like in GTA with the random hobos and preachers.

"Having only played SR3 in the Saints Row series, I can't say for sure whether or not there were massive leaps taken with the latest entry, but I can say that it feels brand new."

I wish more reviews were approached this way. I know I've read a lot of whiners when someone reviews a game without any experience in prior titles, but a fresh perspective is always preferable to a potentially jaded one. Even on games I don't particularly care for, like Call of Duty, reviews could have greatly benefited from "newbies" tackling them.

Great review though! Having not played the others myself, this is the first to really capture my interest - all these positive reviews are just sealing the deal for me picking it up this weekend.

I actually like Famitsu's approach in having multiple reviewers give a score on one game. I wish more outlets would do that although I understand the pressure and time constraints.

Wut? Am I missing something? Of course it feel brand new if you haven't played a game in the series. That's like saying Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time feels brand new even though you haven't played the other games in the series when in reality R&C is getting a little samey tbh.

I'm not saying that Saints Row: The Third is samey as I haven't played it yet, but shouldn't you guys(Joystiq) get someone more familiar with the series to review the game to truly get a more concrete analysis on what separates this game from the past iterations?

Probably feels brand new opposed to being "just another GTA". You can still compare other games in the genre outside the franchise.

Having played Saints Row 2 to death, I can say that The Third is A LOT more polished than the previous one.

Saints Row 2 was ridiculous fun, but it lacked the polish to be a true GTA killer, or at least the game to continue with the legacy of Vice City and San Andreas while GTA does its own thing. But SRTT might just make it, I wasn't expecting it to be this good and this ridiculous.

The only things that disappointed me a bit are:

-Less clothing variety compared to SR2 (but all the clothes looks much better in SRTT so it's not as bad as it sounds)

-A lot more "unlocky" than SR2 since the activities aren't open from the start and you have to do a lot of pseudo tutorial missions like in GTA4

-The city feels smallish

-A few instances of trying too hard with the humor, especially in the beginning (also not that big of a deal)

But all that's kind of nitpicky and the sheer fun of playing it quickly overshadowed my complaints.

Also, Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax is just the most brilliant side activity in the whole game.

Dang, I kinda forgot this game was coming out soon! I gotta run and pick up a copy!

Although, know that the article author asks, would there be any benefit, like story details, if I haven't finished/barely-started Saint's Row 2? I finished SR 1, but never got to SR 2, which sits as I catch up on lots of games.

Not really. The Third Street Saints own the city of Stilwater after the events of SR2. They rob a bank (which is owned by the Syndicate), and thus commences the story of SR:TT. That's it.

I am glad that Saint's Row has evolved from being "the well intentioned but misguided GTA clone" to being "the anti-GTA" or better yet "Everything that GTA should have been and better."

Can't wait to get this today.

@ItchyBarracuda funny. i saw a commercial for it a few times and at the end it said something along the lines of " It GTA Out Of All GTA's " ( i think it was some magazine quote ) and i thought it was interesting no one came on here to bad mouth the quote. but that's good it didn't happen. ( not saying it is or isn't just saying no need for a flame war on that )

@HardBoiled2009 Yeah, I saw the same quote. It's silly comparing the two, though. GTA has always had a subtle kind of humour, and just because the games both use similar mechanics doesn't mean they're in competition.

It just shows how ignorant that magazine was, really.

Add one cup of hilarity, a half cup of insanity, three table spoons of violence, and a dash of dildo deaths. Bake for 45 minutes and out pops a fresh oven baked copy of Saints Row: The Third.

Great review for a great game that I will own.

@A Sandwich No, honestly, all the other sites simply did not "get" this game. Or maybe they did not get their hot cash from THQ for this particular one. They did not give it credit for what it is. It deserves better. They should have delayed the game. It was a bad move to release it among Skyrim and MW3.
