And the rumors just keep flying. The latest comes by way of Edge, which reports that Ubisoft is currently working on projects for Microsoft's next console using "target boxes" designed to emulate the system's projected specifications. Supposedly, these boxes contain components provided by Microsoft, with actual development kits expected to be in the hands of studios by the end of the year. According to Edge, a 2012 launch for the console remains likely.
Meanwhile, the site also reports that a "major Sony-owned studio" is no longer working on PlayStation 3 development, fully shifting its resources to the next iteration (we're going to go out on a limb and call it the PlayStation 4). Furthermore, said studio has apparently been "involved in the development process of the graphics technology" used in the upcoming console.
Now what Sony game could possibly need more graphical horsepower? Oh, wait.

I won't be buying either console when it first comes out, it just isn't worth it to me.

@Rise2theTop I'd like to buy them at launch, yet I'm also afraid again of repeating the RROD and YLOD fiasco. I can't trust MS and Sony to make reliable consoles, at least not at launch.

We can probably expect hardware problems and crappy launch games when the new consoles come out, as usual.
For once I hope I can convince myself to avoid the launch hype and wait about 6 months to 1 year before getting the new consoles.
With so many awesome games coming out every year nowadays, causing big gaming back-logs for most people, I think our gaming back-logs from the current generation can tide us over for 6 months to a year into the new generation.

@nerdydesi1 I agree but on the other hand you know the longer a console is out they tend to cheapen up things a bit. So d@mn if you don't d@mn if you do

@nerdydesi1 fiasco? YLOD affected less than 2% of all units (less than the industry standard, and less than the % of Wiis that died from wiiconnect24) RROD affected around 60%.

Based on what? No one knows the real figures, either for the PS3 or Xbox, nor would anyone would likely to know.
So stop using statistics, that aren't facts or from websites which can easily create figures based on a very small select number of consoles.

I'm in the same boat, I just cant imagine games looking any better than they already do. And they're still pushing the limits of current gen's hardware every year.

Pro Tip: Skip a Generation or 2!
Launch Generation Consoles are usually half assed and end up RRODing or what not. If you grabgeneration 2 or 3 they'Ll have at least fixed the bugs and heck maybe even changed the processor, makeing it a bigger beast at a better price!

@ClanPsi The PS3 has a bigger problem than the YLOD (easy to fix?), which is the Blu-ray failures. I've owned three PS3's now, 1st had Blu-ray failure, second had Blu-ray and an apparent fried motherboard, and the third I got because when I took the 2nd in to get repaired, the guy tried to screw me by giving me a lesser system and not telling me so I ended up with a new 160GB system. At any rate, PS3 failures are *not* as low as you think. Nintendo's Wii was the only system with very few failures from a company not prepared to screw every last one of us over. If only Nintendo would make a system to compete against MS and Sony...

I agree. The only console I bought at launch ever was the Nindendo 64 and I regreted that for a long time. Not that's a bad console by any means, but it was enraging that months would come and go and you'd hear no news of game releases.
Meanwhile, PSOne owners,,,

Well, by whoever's leading the silly Microsoft Marketing team, the name numbers have to be greater than those on Sony's consoles...
I've always wondered why Ballmer and co didn't just decide to go "Xbox Infinity" just to end the battle of numbers.

I like (see: hate) how "style" in console design is based on whether or not you can stack a flat surface on top of the console.
Guess that's how they make sure they're on top of the competition!

Your response was a complete failure, and like the rest of the idiots going by your same logic that downvoted him YOU ARE A FAILURE.

Anyone else feel like they should extend the release for the new consoles so you can save up in the meantime?

Get a job. It's not like saving up $400 to $500 in a 12 months is that hard. People buy new phones in shorter time periods than this.

No, actually it hasn't. The average lifespan has been right around 6 years. For Sony it's been 6 and 6. For Nintendo it's been about 7, 6, 5, 5 (which averages to 5.75). Sega's early consoles were rushed out but the Genesis-Saturn gap was 6 years, and the Saturn-Dreamcast gap was 4 years.
We're pretty much right on par at the moment. New consoles in 2012 would fit the trend almost perfectly. We're lasting just as long as almost every other gen.

@Dhexodus You can save 20 bucks a month for the next 2 years and you would have enough for a $400 console plus a game.... dont understand when people talk about "saving" for things so far off.
