Tactical Espionage Announcement: Kojima working on Metal Gear Solid 5

Though this may not be a surprise worthy of even a single exclamation point, it's welcome news to fans of cardboard camouflage, fateful fistfights, and delicious, convenient Calorie Mates.

There's going to be a Metal Gear Solid 5. And, despite his constant efforts to extricate himself from the series, Hideo Kojima is going to be in charge of it -- though it's currently unclear whether that will be in a higher-level production capacity or as director.

The news comes out of the latest Official PlayStation Magazine UK, which finds a place for Hideo right on the cover. In the issue, Kojima discusses Metal Gear Solid Rising, his plans for this newly announced (but highly expected) sequel, and a new project called "Project Ogre." Whatever it is, we're sure it's not a new Snatcher game.

I was like ! damn it! MGS4 is one of the best games ever made. Cant wait for MGS5. But the big question is, is it a PS3 exclusive?

I'm alright with this, if it is dramatically different than 4, the same way 4 took all the best things from 3 and changed up the rest.

And my guess is that unless it's a dedicated developer under the company (Naughty Dog/ Rare etc.) we've seen pretty much the end(?) of the 3rd party exclusives. At least in this case. MAYBE timed exclusive?
Idk, companies make way more money now multiplatform and the systems probably won't be as different developing wise like they were this gen.

Its probable that it will be on xbox as well, but they are in a better situation now than before with mgs4 and I think they were pretty pleased with that. Don't really see them needing to lose exclusivity when they have the HD re-releases and Rising to help make bank overall. Sony always has some sway with keeping it exclusive, which either way is win win for Konami.

@HighFiveJesus MGS4's lack of 360 presence has nothing to do with that, it had to do with the fact that the game actually filled up the entire BLURAY it was on. Meaning it would've been like 6-7 DVDs long. Far too much to even be fun on 360.

@Gibbeynator It comes out in 2022, but takes 8 months to get through the cutscenes.

Dude, how much of a fanboy one can be? Why the hell does it matter? It's MGS5, for God's sake, it could be PC exclusive that I'd upgrade my rig.

MGS4 was horrible. Filled with retcons and cheesey over-the-top action sequences, and an overwhelming amount of fan service. You can't play the HD Collection without shedding a bit of a tear for MGS1, MGS2, and what might've been had Kojima just not listened to fans.

The fact that we'll get yet another MGS game instead of ZOE3, Snatchers 2, or some original IP is very disappointing to me.

Okay... so is it a prequel? A midquel? Do I play as Zombie Android Snake in this one? Or will we be seeing the introduction of a new character (ala MGS2)?

Also... where the frack is Zone of the Enders 3?! Or a release date for Zone of the Enders HD?

I'm hoping for a way to reverse snakes ageing! old snake would still kick ass though!

MGS4 (outside of retcons, contrived story elements, and just outright bad narration [*cough*Drebin*cough*] was a downer of a story without hope. I've been hoping that Kojima would come back to give Snake a fighting chance.

that's what i was thinking. i mean, the man has expressed his views on continuing (or rather not continuing) with the MGS franchise...and yet here he is, at the helm, once again.

I don't think its ALL to do with that, they could just have easily respun the franchise but from Raiden's perspective, he's young, he's got pretty awesome tech and he has a long way to go and more to uncover, but Hideo feels detached from Raiden, Snake is his creation, in a sense, Snake is Hideo, or at least Hideo's alter ego I suspect, so of course he'd want to continue a story of a character he loves so much.

I think it's like any writer or developer, there will always be a game or character that you become attached to and want to keep going forever.

Can't complain tbh, gaming just doesn't feel like gaming without an MGS :( No, not Raiden, I mean a real MGS and 4 seems like it was lightyears away now.

I think it has more to do with the fanbase associating "Snake" with Metal Gear. People just want to play as snake, and I think that's what we'll see again. I know I'm in the minority, but I thought Solid Snake's story was fleshed out better when he wasn't the playable character as in MGS2, where we could see him. I thought MGS4 kind of undid that, but I wouldn't mind seeing him put into that position again with the player taking control of someone new. Either way, bring on MGS5. :)

That too, while they want to continue it, it just isn't the same without Snake, it's like playing a Halo game without Masterchief......oh wait..

So Rising is more like FF Versus XIII, and this quashes rumours of it being rebranded as MGS5 at the VGAs. Could there be a surprise trailer alongside Rising at the event? .

I wonder whether it's for next-gen. If not it should have a Vita version and have transfarring. Speaking of which he had an unannounced game he is making for Vita, is this it?

Whatever is the case it's nice to have more MGS on the horizon :).

Daaaamn. I just pre-ordered this ... in my mind.

What would MGS5 even be? Not sure how much I'd like it with out Snake or Big Boss. I'm interested nonetheless.

Okay, I know this would contradict so many themes in MGS4, but...

Can Snake be cured and made young again (and maybe get a shave?)

I really just want Snake to be in the series forever.

I don't find it to be poorly written at all to be honest. Have you played Peace Walker? My favorite MGS so far and the story is great.
