Rebellion (Rogue Warrior, AvP) seeking to emphasize quality, rebuild reputation
19
Rebellion, the studio behind Rogue Warrior and Aliens vs Predator, is looking to change its reputation for less-than-average quality. Speaking to Edge (via MCV), CEO Jason Kingsley says the company is trying to turn things around.
"It's now a deliberate policy to move away from making games that might have been good for business, but not necessarily good for our reputation," Kingsley stated. "You're only as good as the deal you're offered. If someone says 'Can you make me a game in nine months?' then the answer is, 'Probably. But it won't be as good as a game where we've had creative input and the time to mature the idea.'"
Rebellion is currently working on NeverDead and Sniper Elite V2. The road to redemption is a tricky one after high-profile incidents. Just ask Obsidian.

Good for them. At least they're not telling their employees to write reviews for them on metacritic.

At least they're aware of sub-par/mediocrity and are willing to attempt to be better... Much more than I can say for some other devs out there.

The first thing I would do is not get my games published by SEGA.

Making a game in nine months? In my opinion it's inexcusable to their customers to take full price for such a game. At the very least such games should be budget priced at launch.

So they're not doing a tie-in with the upcoming 'Dredd' movie, even though they own the character?
Judging (sorry) from how the film is looking, that's probably a good move if they're aiming to improve their reputation.

Even if the game bombs, Rebellion probably gets paid BIG nonetheless.
Besides I used to be in the military, and I used to see that game (like 6 months ago) still at 59.99 when the game was out forever it seemed. You can easily part a young military member with their money, especially when you have any spec ops guy on the cover. I like to call it the CoD effect.
So basically, easy targets (kids) spend money on garbage. (Rebellion)

As far as AvP goes... maybe if you made the PC port to actually run well on PCs, your reputation wouldn't have plummeted? Quality of the game aside, the fact that people with stellar PC specs couldn't even run the game very well attests to how much effort you put into the port (none).
Also, why is it so freaking hard for developers to make a PC game with an interface suited to a mouse and keyboard instead of a console controller? I understand that if the game is multiplatform it's easier to make a UI that works across every system... but "working" and "working well" are two completely different things. Look at Skyrim.

So they make lousy games, but get to keep going. Devs like Bizarre make decent to good games, and get shuttered. What a world.

If you're trying to rebuild your reputation as a game developer, I have a tip:
scrap all projects titled "Sniper Elite V2."
The title alone screams total mediocrity.

Hey now, no need to go after Obsidian. Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas are awesome games. Dungeon Siege III is also pretty dang good.
