You fail to bring up Breath of Fire IV last week, and you fail to bring up Breath of Fire II this week. What gives?

Final Fantasy 6 > all. if any entry deserves a remake its part 6 though it still does hold up very, very well.

@Janitor This.

I love FF7, but FF6 is just... so... good. I'll buy it day 1 at full price.

@Janitor

I shudder to think what'd we get if Square Enix gave Kefka and the rest of the cast a voice. (Some probably already have them in PSP fighting game) We've all built up an image of the characters in our head based off the tiny sprites and there's no way they can meet everyone's expectations. Even CG cutscenes on the PS1 games portrayed the characters in ways that differed from what I pictured.

@ShinAntonio For what it's worth, Kefka's voice acting in Dissidia is pretty spot-on, making him easily the most (read: only) entertaining villain in the game.

@(Unverified) Meh. Dissidia's Kefka is a clown with a silly voice and set of lines, almost to the point of being the "comic-relief" villain of the bunch. Whereas FF VI's Kefka is a nihilistic psychopath.

Speaking of which : Kefka was NOT A DAMN CLOWN for God's sake. He was as jester at most, and even that is pushing it.

You may be in denial due to how bad ass you think he was, but Kefka was indeed a clown/jester. Really it's the same thing.

His american VA for Dissidia was awesome. Not sure how you couldn't love him.

You forgot to mention Secret of Mana supported 3 players at once, virtually unheard for an RPG in the 16-bit era.

Also didn't mention Final Fantasy II/IV or Phantasy Star I-III. Or Chrono Trigger.

It's still pretty unheard of for RPGs today.

@Faceless Troll The only one in that list which I haven't played to completion is Landstalker. I haven't played that one at all so I can't comment on it. Otherwise they are all good games, with the exception of Final Fantasy really only being bearable if you play one of the updated versions.

I love Phantasy Star IV . That game could seriously use a modern remake! Other great games that hold up from the 16-bit era IMO are Illusion of Gaia (SNes), Terranigma (SNes) and Shining Force II (Genesis).

as far as old-school jrpg's i think the 360 does have some phantasy star in the genesis super pack.

i do like lost odyssey on 360 as well, although it doesn't qualify for this series. i can't think of a single jrpg on the original xbox. but i have to give nods to jade empire for being amazing.

Finally I see some love for the old Phantasy Star games on a major gaming site. Frankly, Phantasy Star I-IV are amazing games. I wish they'd go back to something like it instead of continuing to pump out these weird Phantasy Star Online games that are just... MMO wannabe... sorta... things... I don't even understand what PSO games are trying to be. Just feels like they're failing at it.

Just get Final Fantasy 1 and 2 for PS P and Final Fantasy 3 and 4 for DS. That's all you need. And then 5+ for the PS P.
Phantasy Star does NOT hold up. It was a technical achievement back in the day but it wasn't as fluid or fun as its brothers = Ys, Zelda, DQ, FF.

FF3 and FF4 are horrible on DS, at least FF4. The PSP version is way better, the DS version was just too much of a departure for me and felt soulless, like a reanimated corpse of FF4. The PSP version felt like the game I remembered, and it looked the way I remembered. Aged well I mean.

Today's list is comprised of 3 of my top 10 games of all time. (Final Fantasy VI, Phantasy Star IV, and Secret of Mana) Such incredible games... We get good games nowadays, but I sometimes wonder if we didn't lose something in the rush to make the prettiest looking game.

I loved Y's I & II on TG-16 back in the day and it still holds up on the Wii VC. Its one of the few RPGs that I've really loved. The combat can be a bit odd, because you attack by running into the enemies off-center (until you get magic), but its a great pair of games.

Love Landstalker. Its platforming was a real pain in the butt at times, but it was worth it when you finally made all the jumps you repeatedly failed at. Plus I liked the story and characters along with the mature undertones, censored as they were; hello Madam Yard's.

I just realized that Phantasy Star IV has been on my backlog for 15 years. I also just realized that I'm really ashamed of myself, because it's always looked phenomenal.

Agreed on everything, though (and even Landstalker remains a gem if you can adapt to that horribly unintuitive, Solstice-style control scheme).

Landstalker's movements are like other isometric games that came before -- Solstice, Sweevo's World, Airball, and Congo Bongo.

You should've mentioned that Secret of Mana is 3 Player. That's right 3 people can play this game! This was one of the few games you could actively play with other people (I don't REALLY count Final Fantasy, because while you could assign another player to certain characters, it wasn't very fun to wait for combat especially with all the running around) and for the SNES, 3 players was a huge deal. I remember having to grab the legendary super multitap to play this and Madden 94 (clearly the best madden game ever)... Best Couch Play ever

I don't really get what you're trying to do with these lists. You're not doing just obscure titles, you're not doing just well-known titles, and you're not covering anywhere close to the full offering on any platform you look at. Are these all games you've actually done full playthroughs of recently? Do you intend to do part 2s for each console down the road? THE AMERICAN PUBLIC DESERVES TO KNOW!

These lists just don't make any sense. Are you just randomly picking games? I mean what criteria do you put forth for picking these? Please just stop already. And saying the original FF doesn't hold up and then to say "play one of the remakes"... I just have to assume you are a graphics whore.

Another thing.,,, You have to be dense. To say SoM's plot doesn't matter. Did you even play it, or did you watch some one else play it? You really have no clue at all about SoM.
