Chrono Trigger heads to iOS next month

Square Enix continues its campaign to put Chrono Trigger on every single device you own, with the announcement of a version for ~~Leapster~~ iPhone.

The Square Enix Members blog reveals that an iOS release of the classic RPG will be available "before the end of December." No price was announced, but Square Enix tends to be bold with iPhone RPG pricing: Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions debuted at $16, and even the port of Final Fantasy is $9.

The iOS game uses a virtual joystick for locomotion, and a touchscreen menu for battle, neither of which should cause trouble in an RPG. You can see the new battle interface above; check out our gallery for more.

Android? Please? I'd be happy to buy this game on yet another platform...provided it's a platform I own...

@Kayonesoft Probably. I'd prefer a natively-developed version, I guess. To be honest, I haven't messed with emulation very much on my phone.

i first played Chrono trigger on ds and I played straight through meaning i only played that until i beat it. I kind of like being able to play games i may have missed

I prefer they do this when the old games (Chrono Trigger) are better than the new ones (Final Fantasy XIII).

Tactics was pretty sloppy as an ios port. Hoping for better results with CT.

@SmashZilla As long as they don't port it with the PS1 version . . .

I felt like I was taking crazy pills but none of the reviews mentioned the fact that the image was stretched due to the old 4:3 ratio. I'd be ok with the low res if we had gotten proper image scaling.

I think the frame-rate is also not quite up to par. Touch controllers are actually pretty good and of course the game itself is classic.

These Chrono Trigger screenshots look decent so far. Cleaned up interface too.

It blows me away how games like this come to iOS and not steam...

You say that like tens of millions of people (if not more) don't own iOS devices.

Now if you were like, I don't know why this is coming to Windows Phone and not Steam, it might be a little more reasonable.

Not really. It's still a phone vs. PC comparison. iOS or Windows Phone, either way, it's not the PC, which is evidently what he wants.

God DAMN IT! Why did I sell my iPod Touch? So many good games coming out that aren't crappy indie flash games... Finally the iOS service is getting real 3rd-party support, and it's about time.

The iPod Touch is only $200 now (or less in some stores). Should I just sell my 3DS and get an iPod instead? The games are cheaper, but then I'd miss out on all that Nintendo goodness.

You can get the DS version of Chrono Trigger and play it on your 3DS, I'm sure you are aware of this - just saying why go through all the trouble of selling and spending more than the DS cart worth/ Which has no load times and has the cutscenes?

The DS version is the definitive version imo.

Hey! Don't hate on Android so much. Yes, its games might not be as good as the iPhones, but it's capable of doing so much more. Besides, all phone games are pretty crappy in comparison to the DS or 3Ds's offerings.

Cool. I wonder if it will have the new content that was on the DS version. I didn't like it as much as, say, the new content for FF6 on GBA, but more Chrono Trigger isn't a bad thing.

SE know how to bleed money off fanboys who will pick up the same game on every platform they own because of some blind nostalgia they have over some game that gave them boners as kids.

Please, tell us how we're supposed to buy and play games so they better fit your standards. Relieve us of our fanboy blinders and help us cut our massive boners down to size.

It's good to bring it to people that have never played it before. As someone who had a boner over Chrono Trigger when I was back in college (ugh, old man, /kills self) I know that I don't ever need to play it again...but it's nice that the new generation with their ipod touches (and vodka-soaked gummy bears) can.

Also, get off my lawn.

Indeed. My 2G was too sucky to be of any use jailbroken, but this dual-core should be a beast. I'm sure it'll happen soon.

And all the derps at Best Buy tell you that Android is good. HAH.

I had no idea that the value of an entire platform can be judged based solely on how many overpriced ports of 10+ year old games or how man gimpy casual games it has. Instead of, you know, its features, specs and other IMPORTANT differences.

Sounds to me like the "derp" is the one slandering Best Buy employees on Joystiq on the basis of a decade-and-a-half old SNES game...

I already have it on ps1, DS, and Wii. Might as well grab it on my iPhone as well. Maybe they will finally listen to my repeat offender dollars and give me another game.

I hope this runs smoothly on the iPhone 4. I know this was probably being developed with the iPhone 4 in mind but I know soon games are goin to be gearing up mainly for the 4S and it's new processor and graphics. Final Fantasy 3 runs like a dream on my 4, and it's 3D, so hopefully Chrono Trigger will run just as good if not better, considering its 2D.

I'll get this only if it keeps Frog's medieval talking ways. I was so disappointed when the DS version removed that.
