Like always, what matters most is the quality of the game, not any gimmick, be it 3D, HD, movement or something else.

Great article, sir. I always thought the problem with Wii/Kinect/Move was that devs were so eaer to show of new tech, instead of just doing great games that could stand on their own with or without the gimmicks. 3DS so far is giving great games (although not enough of then), so I don't expect games to just push 3D for the sake of it.

Of course, if it is a great game that uses the feature in a good way, then you get a winner (Elite Beat Agents and it's use of touch and dual screen on the DS, for example).

I've always been fascinated by 3D. I bought the 3DS and, recently, a 3D TV. I don't care if the 3D is necessary or integral. If anything, I'd rather it not be so I can turn it off and not worry about missing anything.

3D doesn't have to be a gimmick: Ico, Uncharted, Gears 3 are all great games, and you can turn the 3D on and it looks crazy. Nothing comes out of the screen and the 3D has nothing to do with the gameplay: it's awesome.

I don't use the heated seats in my car 3/4 of the year, either, but they're undeniably great on those cold days.

@Dashx747

3D, HD and motion controls are all components of the video games that utilise them (albeit to varying degree); not just gimmicks thrown onto the side.

Imagine playing Skyrim in SD with Wii graphics or Skyward Sword with a standard twin-stick controller. Without these "gimmicks," the quality of the game as a whole is significantly degraded.

The part about Ghost Recon is exactly what I love about the 3DS. SSFIV is another great example. The characters look like real life figurines!

Game is great, some areas look better than Mario Galaxy, the 3D is not forced, and I lost 2 lives from world 1 to 7 and 45 lives in world 8 XD

Its like the ds touch screen when it came out where is what just some useless gimmick tact on to a gba game.
Then companies started knocking out quality games.

I mean can you imagine cell phones before touch screens?

First. Game is amazing.

However I was let down by the lack of variety in the levels, and the 3D effect sometimes goes all wonky, especially if some things get to "close" to your eyes, you might see ghosting. Not game breaking but a bit annoying.

Also even with the 3D, I still had trouble handling Mario in 3D space. Specifically parts where you could fall off in the foreground AND the background. It might have been because of the slide pad, I suck, or the 3D effect messing me up. Who knows.

Still a great game. Own it and totally beat it, though the very last photo you get is kind of a tease.

@hami83

Most of my seemingly pointless deaths happen in areas where the camera is positioned like a 2D game, but the game still controls in 3D. Honestly, I think those levels were poorly designed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still loving the hell out of the game. I just finished getting every gold coin and gold flag in the normal stages, and now I'm halfway through doing the same on the special stages.

The 3D is the least important upgrade to the 3DS. AR, friends list, and especially the circle pad pro all contribute much more to the handheld.

The 3D isn't bad, though. It just shouldn't be nintendos ONLY selling point. The handheld has so much more to offer.

This

The 3D is great, but people need to understand that this is a huge upgrade to the DS family and improves in almost every way, and 3D is NOT required to enjoy the system.

I have to say the 3D was used very well in Super Mario 3D Land. This is one of the few 3DS games I have where I actually keep 3D on the whole time. The particles flowing off screen, to the ink blobs spat at your screen, to the postcards pop ups, hell having 3D on even helps you judge distance of platforms which is essential as a 3D platformer.

Good job Nintendo. Now make a new Zelda game using 3D the same way!

I like that some 3D games look like toy scenes. Zelda and SF4 did it for me. And I like the depth perception you get in Mario 3D. I'm able to jump and leap around and know almost exactly how far away I am from landing. The 3D rooms can be disregarded, but if you're basing the whole game off that then you have a problem with your brain and it needs seeing to.

For me, 3D is all about the presentation. I am a 3D fanatic. I buy as many 3D Blu-rays as can come out, I play Gears 3, Halo CE Anniversary, and Uncharted 3 with the 3XD mode on, and the stereoscopic 3D is a major selling point with the 3DS to me. I just love the thrill of it, and it usually makes the game or movie even better looking. Why must the medium serve any functional purpose? It looks great, and that is ask that matters.

Playing it now, 3d Is awesome, but the first half of the game is mostly too easy (for me), luckily the second half is pretty to really hard, I'm really enjoying it now that I have breeze through stages as well as back breakers.

The 3D was good, but subtle, i felt. I had more of an issue with the fact that the difficulty really doesn't pick up until World 7 (though that's 7 of 16, so it works out okay)
