Rumor: Writer teases Dante's Inferno sequel
51
Sharp-eyed rumor hunter @supererogatory brings word that we might not have seen the last of EA's goofy Dante's Inferno franchise, despite the lukewarm reception of the first game. The official bio page for writer Joshua Rubin, who worked on Assassin's Creed 2, says he was "the sole writer for a Major Unannounced Sequel from Visceral Studios at EA Games."
Visceral is, of course, the EA label behind the Dead Space series and the first Dante's Inferno. Just to really rile up the rumormongers, Rubin's bio then links to a "hint" ... that leads to the Super Bowl trailer for Dante's Inferno.
The obvious implication is that Visceral's working on Dante's Inferno 2, which would be a sequel to an action game based on a 14th-century epic poem. We should probably start thinking up subtitles now. Dante's Back? Hell to Pay? Luciforever? Beatwice? Have at it.

I am not shocked at all that they are gonna make a sequel cause they can and the first game did good enough in their minds to jusify it.

I when it first came out and the developers were all excited about adapting the next two volumes for sequels and I was like, really? Have you even read the next two volumes? You're excited to make a game about Purgatory?

It just wouldn't, anymore than Paradise would. Hell makes sense, but Purgatory is basically just a holding area before a soul reaches heaven. Sure, you still have the different terraces like you do in Inferno, but I don't see it translating well to video games, especially in the style of the Dante's Inferno game.

Dante's inferno: the long boring walk... the end of the first game led into Dante walking how is a sequel possible without completely getting away from the epic poem.

I liked Dante's Inferno. It sure wasn't perfect, but if they tidy up the story and gameplay a bit I can definately see me buying it.
Oh, and my title would be: "Dante's Inferno 2; This time, it's biblical".

And if it fails to live up to expectations my future derogatery subtitle would be "FAILgatory".

The sequel to Inferno (the poem), was Purgatory, and the third was Heaven, all three part of The Comedy (now know as The Divine Comedy).
Which would mean the second one will be in purgatory, going up on a hill of the repenting sinners, while battling glowing warrior angels that guard the gates of Heaven.
The third would be in space (sort of, you have to read the book to get the grip), and, well, I don't know. John, Mary, Jesus and God? Guess EA won't follow Dante's original too much.

Considering the last thing you see and hear in DI is a slithering snake in Purgatory and Satan's laugh i think it would be more of a invasion-of-heaven-by-demons-style thing.

Which sucks because Dante storming the gates of heaven to kill god would be badass.
Moses, muhammad and jesus can be minibosses.
Jesus keeps getting back up after you kill him so you need to find a way to nail him down, muhammad is invisible and moses staff turns into abgiant snake you have to fight while he throws the 10 plagues at you.
HOW CAN THIS NOT BE A REAL THING?

Reviewers went way too hard on this game simply because it played like GoW. It was a fantastic game...

@Eniko But see I liked the gameplay alot. You could pick up items and build a unique character build in skill tree. Make Dante a specialist in the area you like the most... In GOW3 any item you picked up you couldnt use until your second playthrough, and there was no skill tree.

I hated this game. I'm fine with games taking aspects of another and building on that (Darksiders is a good example), but that's not what DI did... It was a clone. It was WORSE than a clone... It was just a reskinning of God of War. Normally even THAT might not be a problem for me, except in this case the clone wasn't even good. Visceral wanted this to be gruesome just for the sake of being gruesome, and they weren't even serious about it.
The game was a complete joke to me, and I REALLY hope a sequel doesn't go anywhere.

They would've had more luck with the franchise had they attempted to make the game a flat-out parody instead of an unintentional one.

I thought Dante's Inferno was a great game, and this is coming from a huge God of War fan. What's that saying about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery?
And heck (hell!) - God of War doesn't exactly follow Greek mythology to the letter. They change stuff around for the sake of making a better video game. It happens all the time and all you Divine Comedy fanboys (??) should probably settle down a little bit.
In conclusion, I'd love a sequel. Also - I almost pissed my pants at "Beatwice".

Not defending God of War's "authenticity" (because let's face it, it has none) but the Greek myths were very flexible. Unless you had some kind of egregious change like a celibate Zeus going on, a lot of variation was generally accepted. So, playing around with Dante's work is a bit different.
(Gotta represent my useless degree in Classics).

To that I say - respect.
What it comes down to for me is, if the changes make for a better video game experience, I'm okay with that. To be honest, I've never read The Divine Comedy (I have it downloaded on my ereader but have to work up to it!), so I can't comment too much on how "worried" I am about possible changes.
To make a (sort of) comparison - I'm a massive Cormac McCarthy fan. I enjoyed The Road (the book) so much that I've avoided watching the movie, because I don't see the point. It may be great, but I can't see it being better than the book. Plus, maybe I will get upset by changes made to the movie, so again - what's the point in watching the movie when I was more than satisfied by the book?
So, if you enjoyed reading The Divine Comedy so much that you can't bear to see it possibly screwed up by a bunch of video game developers, simply don't play the game.

Well... The point of watching the movie would be that
A) It's terrific
B) Even if it's not as good as the book, it can still be a good movie
C) I don't believe movies should try to be the same as books, there a different form of entertainment, and to me they should continue to try and BE different.
Totally off point, but that movie rocks.

Would much rather have Dead Space 3!
The first Dantes Inferno was alright, they just took GOW and changed the weapons/bosses. Still its a fun game if you can pick it up cheap.

Goofy compared to WHAT?!
Seriously, compared to the plot of any Japanese beat 'em up ever, the Dante game looks like high-art.

Well, considering Dante's Inferno ended on ":To be Continued" it really isn't all that surprising. Personally I can't wait for DI2, the 1st game was really good. It was a better God of War 3 than the actual GoW3 IMO.
