People Can Fly doing Gears of War prequel trilogy 'a likely scenario,' says OXM
27
Here we are, roughly six years into the "next-generation" lifecycle and we're seeing the third installments of major franchises. In a one-year period, we'll see Resistance 3, Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed: Revolution (sort of), and Gears of War 3. And while not all of these episodes represent the end of a considered story arc, Epic Games hasn't been shy about calling Gears of War 3 the end of the line for Dom and crew. Which raises the question: Who will handle the lucrative Gears franchise going forward?
"Gears of War will live on, of course, but in what form?" the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine posits, via CVG, before suggesting "a prequel trilogy developed by Epic-owned People Can Fly (Bulletstorm) as a likely scenario." With Bulletstorm failing to reach profitability (and presumably failing the basic litmus test for being franchised), People Can Fly will be looking for something to work on.
With three Gears titles under their belts, the core North Carolina-based Epic team may be eager to move onto greener pastures. For now, they're working on RAAM's Shadow, the first piece of campaign DLC in the Gears trilogy, and notably a prequel. Sounds like a nice way to hand things off, doesn't it?

I hope this happens because it increases the odds of seeing a gun that shoots additional guns that all have chainsaws on them.

That could be kind of sweet. The story to Gears 3 kind of left a bad taste in my mouth (after the great campaign to the second game), and I'd like to be able to play as the
**MINOR SPOILER ALERT**
character I loved most again for the entirety of the campaign. Hopefully it'll focus on Marcus and Dom, again. It's like if you couldn't play as Luigi at the end of World 4 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii; "hey! This is my favorite character and I would really like to spend the rest of the game playing as him, you jerks!"
But maybe I'm just a little bitter. :)

Most of Epic now are working on non-Gears related stuff, like Infinity Blade 2. There are still working on TUs and map packs.

Why is Battlefield 3 not listed?

@carbonize
Because BF2 was made before six years ago. It's about games that were made 6 years ago and then now have a third.
Why no Motor Storm though?

I did post saying how I thought Bulletstorm was a brilliant game and made a refreshing change from all the seriousness that we're seeing with FPS these days but Joystiq seems to have chosen not to post it :|
Was looking forward to the blatantly hinted at sequel but guess it will never be.

It's a shame more people didn't pick up bulletstorm. It was ridiculously fun. I'd love a sequel.
That said, I'd love for this to happen. Gears is one of my favorite series, and People Can Fly have proven they can make great games.

No. More Bulletstorm please.

I'm kinda for this. Bulletstorm was the better shooter, while GOW is the better storyline. If People Can Fly could bring the great mechanics of Bulletstorm into a solid GOW story, then they'd have a winner on their hands.

Hasn't society learned that prequels are hardly ever a good idea

I was always positive they would do a prequel, like Reach, since on all the games they talk heavily about the pendulum wars and the fact that the first game begins literally years after E-Day (no way we would not play that moment at some point) and more so now with Gears 3 revealing juicy info about E-day, Marcus' dad, Myrrah, Imulsion, etc.
However a trilogy, I was not expecting.

the thing about that is that E-Day was the first time the Locust showed up and started destroying shit, right? so the Pendulum Wars were essentially man vs. man conflicts....sooo, my question is, are we just going to be fighting other beefy dudes in big combat armor in this prequel trilogy?

@Liquidfingers That's my guess.. until the super cool and advertisement-focused E-Day.
Thats the problem with prequels. They're always supposed to take place in simpler times, however, well, its the NEW game, so it need to be BIGGER AND BADDER AND BOOMIER, so... yeah. I don't see a full trilogy out of JUST that. I'm sure they'll have something stored up.

I guess the new thing is to make a trilogy, and then release prequels until you can't milk it anymore. Man, I really wish the industry would start killing off IPs and creating a bunch of new ones, I'm getting tired of the same games.

Well, while I'm super excited at the prospect of more Gears of War - especially a prequel, which could be wicked!
I'm also a bit disappointed we won't see a Bulletstorm sequel. Bulletstorm was excellent in every way. Great weapons, game mechanics, characters - fun story, great graphics... so on and so forth. Easily one of my favorites this year, and should be on anyone's top 10 list for 2011. But alas... money talks - and apparently other gamers didn't want to take the chance on a new franchise - their loss is now everyone's loss.

Because the Gears of War series was so uncreative that it didn't spawn a whole wave of Cover Based shooters that feature the likes of Mass Effect and Uncharted.

WOW! If this is true maybe we can get a gears of war that is bug free
1. no corrupted profile leading to the black screen of death on gears 2 or 3.
2. No issues where your season pass or DLC, weapon skins ect. dont work cause you have another profile using gears on the same hard drive.
What other problems did gears have? I have tried to forget.

I'm still going to buy Bulletstorm in December, since I ran short of cash because of other titles (can only afford one title a month even if it means sacrificing other good titles). Was hoping for a sequel. But more Gears Of War always good in my book.
