Render me like one of your French girls: The Titanic in CryEngine 3
78
For the past several years, ORM Entertainment has been working on a simulator called Titanic: Lost in the Darkness. Beginning life as a mod for the original Crysis, T:LITD (just rolls of the tongue, doesn't it) has been updated and refined and reiterated upon until eventually being moved to CryEngine 3, where it has achieved its current, staggeringly gorgeous state, as seen in the trailer above.
Now, when we say "staggeringly gorgeous," we don't mean "Oh hey, that looks pretty good for a mod." We mean that we would rather watch this video again than look at a Christina Hendricks made out of diamonds, standing on top of a unicorn riding a rainbow over a waterfall in space. Hopefully Titanic: Lost in the Darkness' next reincarnation will be playable and available to the masses.

And there's so much more. What we've been shown here is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thank god for modders, showing us what the CE3 engine can really do!

@nerdydesi1 Notice the framerate slowdown in the video though, when he is testing this I bet it is owning his computer.
Crytek learned their lesson with Crysis 1 to not only have galactic supercomputers from the future being able to play their games, its the reason games like WoW is (or was) so popular is because everyone and thier granny could play them.

Now if games actually looked like this..=(
It is possible in the current era, as shown by modders, but yea =/

@xiLeShadow No, it really isn't possible. This is just an environment, a very, very, very, very, very pretty environment. Input physics and animation, artificial intelligence, and scripted events and this would take its toll on any rig that even the most diehard, well-to-do pc gaming consumer built.

Wow! I hope this mod team thinks about rendering Crysis 2 like this. Then we can have a true sequel graphically to Crysis on the pc! One could only hope...

It wouldn't be an Unreal Engine game if I couldn't "activate" the toilets.

That's the closest thing to photorealism I've seen this side of cars in Forza/GT. Except this is the entire setting not just a set piece like a vehicle. This would be one hell of an immersive experience (no pun intended... you know, after that iceberg thing happens).

Wow, just think, this is what games could look like if we'd just let the consoles die already.

I've been doing CGI for years to the best of my ability. Never before has a single video made me feel like such a failure.

So is it going to be a Poseidon Adventure type game where you have to save as many people as you can? Because that would be awesome.
Though I do wonder how well it will cope when it fills up with water. Will all that furniture float?

Hmmm, they need some more litter objects around the rooms, and a few wrinkles in the carpet. Everything look waaaay too pristine, and it makes the environment feel fake. That's the problem with creating 3D environments that are meant to capture the look of something brand new and shiny. It's much harder to get rid of the "fakeness" of the graphics, than if you were modeling and lighting, say, a ruin or a condemned building. Pretty and perfect is easier to do fast, but gritty is easier to do well.

...We are talking a ship that prided on her pristine... Almost all pictures depict her as immaculate. First class was probably an OCD's dreamland.
Perhaps 3rd class can look ruddy.

my only critique would be that a lot of the curved models are too segmented; they don't look like smooth curves. that being said, it only stood out to me because everything else looked so good.

It's simple geometry for the most part so nothing fancy there.
Everything is shiny, nothing fancy there, just stupidity.
The lighting is terrible and shadows must be very much WIP, nothing fancy there.
I mean, if you stare glossy eyed at it, yeah it's pretty but when you take into account that it's supposed to mimic reality. It's just shitty.
It reminds me of Myst renders in real time, basically. Which I suppose is nice but it still doesn't make it look "gorgeous" just rendered-like shininess and things in real life aren't nearly that shiny everywhere...
