agreed. this is the first generation of consoles that come out when i have a real job. still gonna wait a few months for most of the launch bugs to be worked out, but it's gonna be reeeeal sweet having a next-gen console within a year of its release.

@Shadowbender yeah I smell that. It's the smell of lead free solder and a bunch of fancy hardware cramped inside a box without adequate cooling.

It's the smell of high failure rates.

"The console has an 8-core processor for super-speed performance up to 20 times faster than previous Xbox models. It supports 3D, 4K2K, multiTV (DPConnect), live TV and webcam, as well as GPS that allows users to view the location of any other user on an active map."

This is why they don't let designers near the real engineers. I don't think Microsoft wants to pull a Sony and make their next console cost 599 us dollars.

So much stuff packed into a device that when using any of it (because without using any of it the battery is 3 -5 hours) that it dies quickly and is basically worthless.

""The console has an 8-core processor for super-speed performance up to 20 times faster than previous Xbox models. It supports 3D, 4K2K..."

None of that's actually outside the realm of plausibility if you compare console hardware to contemporary technology, or even old technology for that matter. Xenon, for example, has absolutely abysmal IPC despite its relatively high clockspeed; its single threaded performance varies from being slightly better to marginally worse (depending on the application) than that of the CPU found in the original Xbox. This massive performance deficit is only mitigated by having multiple cores, multiple threads, and the fact most developers use DTM programming. It's entirely possibly for the next generation Xbox to have a CPU that's 20x faster.

As for Ultra HD support, consider that contemporary high end GPUs can drive most games at their maximum settings across 3 to 6 HD monitors. L4D2, for example, doesn't drop below 60 FPS at 5760x1080. By the time the next Xbox launches, it'll have a GPU at least two to three times faster than an HD 6970 or GTX 580.

It's importantly to remember that the 360 and PS3 are both rocking hardware that's 7-6 years old.

Specs like that would cost us way more than $600 USD for this console.

Honestly, I don't expect the hardware specs to be too amazing, I just expect them to have a hell of a lot more ram and to be native 1080P.

Microsoft will use something like OnLive! but with the addition of an obsolete disc drive system (HD DVD) to help stop piracy.

Stream or HD DVD gives a lot of control to prevent piracy. People will be hard pressed to pirate on HD DVD as they can't get the burners or the blank discs. Even if they already have some discs and a burner, they won't get any more discs so they can't pirate the games for long.

So discs will be altogether obsolete? I don't see storage media for video games really going anywhere. Even if they end up on their own memory cards or something, I don't think the whole download/streaming thing will catch on.

I'd rather it didn't, but it will. Maybe not this coming generation, but physical media is definitely on its way out; for better or worse.

@(Unverified) - Discs have mostly been obsolete for a while now. Just think of how much some games change after launch with the multitude of patches and DLC that's available. It's almost pointless to even own a disc when you think about it. It'd make more sense for developers to release games primarily as downloads with the intent of pressing and delivering discs to customers once patching and content creation has ceased.

I can say without a doubt that streaming will not replace media anytime soon. Look at our wonderful ISPs getting rid of unlimited data and putting restrictive caps. That puts a damper on digital distribution very quickly.

Its a failure of an idea especially for consoles. Why the hell would I buy a $60 digital game that may cause me to go over my monthly cap with my ISP and so I have to pay more in overage fees or get cut off. Also, I can't borrow, trade, rent, sell, etc. the game. And I'm still paying $60 at a loss of convenience and freedom that I get from a retail copy.
