Uncharted 3 patch adds alternate aiming, brings back cutscene viewer
41
If you think Drake's marksmanship went awry between Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3, you'll be pleased to hear Patch 1.02 is now available, bringing alternate aiming options to the single-player game. Naughty Dog concocted these changes with the aid of its community, which has been vocal about several reticule-ous issues since Uncharted 3 launched.
Patch 1.02 also makes several granular changes to the multiplayer gameplay and interface, and implements the cutscene viewer -- a perfect companion if the story was all a blur to you. Of course, if you prefer things all a-blur, you'll welcome the return of the game's previously "missing" motion blur effects.

I updated last night, but didn't notice the cutscene viewer, what a great addition!
It would be nice if we could get the Cheats back, for replay value.

Yay for modular programming that allows them to do things like this. ND are probably in a class all by themselves when it comes to programming and art direction.

Too bad enemy balancing and encounter balancing didn't get a look. Fighting in the last 1/2 of the game can get pretty obnoxious.

Totally agree with your comment, but the other Uncharted games got pretty obnoxious in the last 1/3 of it, maybe a little less. I had a lot of house guests and TV banditing that stopped me playing it over 2 weeks now, but I was late into it in a ghost town and it got annoying with the body count coming up. It I think isn't a symptom of U3 but of the entire series, its real true solitary flaw. They shift way too hard from exploration and daring moves to unbelievable to the amount of getting tiring gunplay.

Judging from the ND forums and blog, alot of people are complaining about the Fleet Foot booster being nerfed, causing awkward movement, and the aim assist getting boosted.
But, until I can check it out myself, I'll just put is at the internet going about its usual "They changed it, now it sucks" mentality.
Figured I get this outta the way before Joystiq's comments become a carbon copy of ND's blog.

My wife and I were watching TV yesterday and we saw an add for Uncharted 3. Her comment "There was sure a lot of swearing with that game" referring to my constant frustration with the piss-poor controls and gameplay. I loved Uncharted 2 - but Uncharted 3 was terrible (I'm talking controls and gameplay - not the story, which I enjoyed - and the graphics were at times jaw-dropping good!).
Now, this patch drops and I'm thinking how much time and energy I wasted on an admittedly (by Naughty Dog based on this patch) broken game... My thoughts on Uncharted 3 might be completely different had I played it post-patch - but now they're tainted until I take the time to play through again.
Not sure my point here... maybe that companies need to release demo's/beta's for single player - let us give some feedback - so that when we play the full game, it's as fun as it can be. Or maybe the lesson here is to not buy anymore Naughty Dog games when they first drop until I get a chance to hear what the masses think (because clearly, reviewers were bought - with all the glowing reviews but rarely any mention of the negatives - except for Scott Jones, the only reviewer with Balls).

Oh please. The controls were not THAT big of an issue. I platinumed it before the patch, and while the aiming did seem off...it was by no means game breaking. What was more annoying, was that the shoulder swap option wasn't on by default.

@Axcalibur - Strange, I had no issues with it at all. Platinum'd well before the patch (15th November - http://psnprofiles.com/trophies/Uncharted-3-Drakes-Deception/Paranoimia) and never a single issue.
Perhaps most reviewers didn't mention the 'issues' because, like me, they didn't see any. I played through Uncharted 1 & 2 again immediately before 3 arrived, and to be perfectly honest, noticed no difference between the shooting at all.

It's interesting to see such a divided opinion - a couple of you noted you Platinumed without the patch (good job, by the way) and other's agreed with my assessment that the game was lacking and this patch should have come much sooner! Funny how us gamers can be...
Little side note - I have no proof whatsoever on reviews being bought - and most likely, it's a baseless accusation with zero truth. So consider that comment of mine a joke in poor humour, and let's not get all bent out of shape about it.

I thought it was a good point. While I don't think reviewers were bought, the reactions to your comment show that it's the fans that don't want to hear anything negative, ever.
I remember reading Eurogamer's review. Even though they gave it an eight (a great score in my book), the fans complained so much that they even had one of Naughty Dog's designers come on the site and explain why the reviewers points of contention were actually just a misunderstanding!
The game was by no means perfect, and it stands as my least favorite Uncharted. Is it a bad game? Not even a tiny bit, it just really doesn't do anything to add to the formula. The whole industry seems a bit broken nowadays; it seems like if a game is highly anticipated, reviewers will give it a high mark regardless of its flaws, and the ones that don't will be lambasted by gamers.

What was broken, was the story. It was ok but there was too much cut-and-paste (ending especially). It started off very well though.

@Axcalibur I agree abt releasing demo/beta to the masses b4 the launch and improving from the feedback. I dunno why many game companies won't do this. What do they have got to lose anyway by releasing a demo? Are they afraid people who don't like the demo won't buy the game at all?

Call me stupid, but I'm just wondering what Motion Blur is.
Posted: Nov 28th 2011 6:11PM Softserve said
@KenobiEagle When things move quickly, blur is added to it for an extra effect. A lot of games seem to mostly use it when you're moving the camera around quickly... Witcher 2 comes to mind.
I've personally never been a huge fan of it, but there are situations where it works well.

It's a visual effect that's used to make for an edgy or realistic look.
Think of it when a speedy sports car zooms across the frame of the camera, or a third-person shooter when you pan the camera/move the gun. It's that blur from speed.

Pretty simple way of seeing it.
If you film a quick pan across a room, when you pause on a frame, it will be blurry.
In animation however, you are taking pictures every frame, meaning that everything is still when you shoot it. So motion blur has to be added to make it seem more realistic/believable.

While I will agree that the aiming felt pretty artificial, and simply, well...not as good, I didn't find it a game-breaker like some had complained it was.

*HEART NAUGHTY DOG* Thank God.... I LOVE this game, LOVE the story, but was absolutely maddened by the controls.

Sigh yeah agree. The story, locations, graphics, all around "feel" of this game were some of the best I've ever played. The game though? Uhhhh not so much. Controls were a bit off(Not maddeningly so, just a bit) and I think I'm just growing tired of standing in a room having to pick off spawned enemies for 30 minutes. Over and over. The setpieces are AMAZING though and I know how difficult/impossible it would be to make a game that was only plane crashes and horse chases etc.

I never noticed any problems with the controls. They felt a bit awkward at first, but I just figured it was from switching from BF3 to U3. I beat the game on Crushing, and could even headshot guys while they were running sometimes. So I got used to it.

This should be no option the alternate aiming should be default. Aiming at launch had more control lag than Killzone 2 KILLZONE 2

very disappointed about the alternative aiming - hoping it would be flipping L1 and R1 with L2/R2 so I could aim/shoot with my Gioteck triggers
