This reminds me of that cannon room glitch in Twilight Princess. Super easy to avoid.

It doesn't, Nintendo would have to send out fixed copies to people that own the game, like they did for Metroid: Other M.

False. Black Ops and MW3 are both regularly patched on Wii. MW3 has had 2 patches already.

@ouenwoof The discs remained the same, glitch in-tact, while Nintendo provided a fixed SAVE GAME if you sent them an SD card with your save file.

What difference does it make? The point is that they still cannot patch the game due to how they've designed the game, and you have to go about waiting for Nintendo to send you back a fixed SD card.

@Co If that is truly the case, I'd love to know Nintendo's excuse for not patching Twilight Princess and Metroid: Other M, and why there hasn't been a single update to Brawl in the nearly four years of online-play woes.

I'm genuinely curious as to why Activision seems to be the only one with patches (and I read The Conduit 2 as well, but still one or two publishers?). Everything I've read on the matter makes it seem like the games have to be created from the start with enough spare memory to load DLC, and that's how these patches work. And games like this, which are taking full advantage of the Wii, just can't handle side-along content stored on the system or removable storage.

@radioactivez0r Black Ops, The Conduit 2, and Modern Warfare 3 all have patch support on the Wii. It seems Nintendo only lets certain games have it......

I think Wii U in this regard will be WAY different. Well, actually Wii U's only relevance to Wii will be in name, for branding purposes.

Nintendo can fix games by doing a system firmware update which doesn't use up any of its flash storage memory. The thing with Metroid Other M and sending their SD card save file to Nintendo was another option for people who couldn't wait for Nintendo to release a systemfirware update.

@Knives Chau When Twilight Princess had a similar glitch, I believe Nintendo offered the opportunity for anybody to send in their copy of the game for an updated copy of the game with the bug corrected. But there's no way to actually apply a software patch for a game for the Wii AFAIK.

I don't see how this can even be mentioned as a "GOTY" when it has a bug like this. How can a game with something this game breaking warrant such a good review?

@Xoonaka Because this is a bug that requires a very specific sequence of events to reproduce, which is easily avoidable and will most likely only be encountered by a small minority of players (and hopefully even fewer players now that the issue is documented). If this was a game-breaking bug that was unavoidable and encountered by a vast majority of players, that would be a different story. But obviously the reviewers did not find this bug, nor did Nintendo's testers, so it's certainly a rare instance.

@Xoonaka Because it's a mistake, and 1 mistake should not derail the entire game. Look at Skyrim, that has way more issues than Skyward Sword. Mistakes happen.

Because we're in an age where GOTY goes to the game that is fun, not to the game that is made well or done by anything but lazy developers and tested by game testers who wouldn't know a glitch if it hit them over the head with a club and threw them 10,000 feet in the air.

Because GOTY is an arbitrary designation that just means "really good game". If the games industry wanted to get serious about an Oscar-level GOTY award show, I'm all for judging things like that more harshly when it comes to a GOTY award. As it stands, and all we have are the f*cking Spike VGAs, then GOTY designations can kiss my ass.

Look at the specific details, that's like a 1 in a 1000 type occurrence.

Not true, there is the AIAS (Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences) - Which is significantly better than the VGAs. Been going strong since 1998 and is usually held in April/May. It's composed of a board of people in the industry just like the Oscars. It holds a hell of a lot more merit than throwing GOTY on the box, and since there is no bribery involved ala IGN or GameSpot it tends to be a lot more varied and interesting. Like in 2011 Limbo won for Adventure Game of the Year.

You think Skyward Sword deserved more than a 7.5 with a fair lack of plot, often unresponsive controls, and wii graphics? Giving it more than a 5/10 in the graphics category in this day and age would be stupid, yet most reviewers did.

GameSpot's score was spot on. They're one of the few websites that aren't afraid of giving Zelda the score it deserves, and totally nailed the game with that review and score. SS was easily the most disappointing and boring 3D Zelda I've ever played.

@Timjoy Not to hate on Nintendo but their games are also usually very simple and basic when it's comes to the technology behind them and the graphics can't even compare to what the other systems are putting out, so I would expect there to be less glitches in software written for less powerful and less complex hardware

@esbeekay I don't think that's a fair assessment. Nintendo games usually look very polished, and it's obvious that a lot of work goes in to making the gameplay as seamless as possible. I think that hard work, rather than the technology, is the reason that glitches are pretty rare in Nintendo games. I'm no fanboy, but you have to give Nintendo credit for that, at least.

The fidelity of the graphics have nothing to do with most glitches.

As someone who has worked in QA: Yes, Nintendo games are mind-bogglingly bug-free, compared to most games. Even most AAA games.

In the old days of consoles, the NES and SNES and Genesis days, there were no patches. Bugs that didn't get caught lived on forever. You could fix the problem in future copies of the game, but you could never go back and fix it in copies you already manufactured or sold. (Most consoles had neither storage to hold patches nor an internet connection to download them.) It made developers much more paranoid about finding every last bug, and I think it bred a certain amount of discipline into companies doing console work at the time around bug-finding and -fixing, and that's something Nintendo has clearly striven to maintain. (Not hurt by the fact that they keep designing their consoles around not making patches easy.)

I still remember when the Xbox (just the previous generation? really?) made patching possible, and people began to bemoan how soon the norm on consoles would be like the norm on PCs, where games were released with known bugs that were fixed in later patches, rather than games being delayed until every last known bug was squashed, then launched as holistic, complete things. The naysayers may have had that one right. :-S
