The new dashboard does a good job of them not getting in the way or being obvious. Another reason why the new dash is sweet.

Exactly. The ad placement is smaller and less obtrusive in the new dash, and somehow people are freaking out about it more now than ever.

I'm more annoyed that the square that represents my inserted game is the same size as those irrelevant ads, meanwhile ads for the marketplace take up the center of the screen...

LOL So you pay $60 for the ability to play online and the ads are ok because they're not too obvious? The only reason you should have ads is if the service is free like PSN. That free game a few years ago was even ok b/c it was basically an advertisement for Yarvis. But it was FREE.

Get a gaming computer and use an addon like AdBlock Plus to disable ads on the Internet.

This.
My cable service added banner ads to the channel guide when I was paying nearly $100/mo., so I pulled the plug. Netflix, Hulu, and an HTPC with an antenna FTW.

@Tommy758 Are you out of your mind? On the "home" menu alone, three-fourths of the square space are occupied by advertisements. The one-forth that isn't are the one small box to launch the game in your disc drive, the other is quickplay.

This entire Metro UI was build around advertisements and having them in your face as much as possible.

@Tommy758 They take some time to ramp up. If you don't spend much time at the dashboard (like me), it will take some time for the ads to be loaded and displayed.

But they will be there and I can't imagine you won't notice them once they are.

So, if I'm paying for Cable TV, there should be no commercials? If I subscribe to a magazine, there should be no advertisements? If I subscribe to a Fruit of the month club, should I not get advertisements for their equally delicious Steak of the month club?

Correct. You're probably not old enough to remember, but cable TV used to be really limited with ads. Only one or two per time slot. The idea was indeed that paying customers should have less ads.

You make a valid point, but I think the reason why we are all a bit ticked by this is the fact that there was a recent price increase for all these "new features". Why must we have to deal with a price increase AND more ads? These ads ARE way more forced in our faces than the last dashboard. None of the other dashboards had an ad on the home/main section of the dashboard, not to mention now there is an ad on every section... With the increase of price AND ads it is obvious Microsoft is trying to have their cake and eat it too.

@SmashZilla I paid money for the system. I paid money for my Xbox Live Gold account. I paid money for the Kinect. I pay money for games. Why the hell does my games console need ads?

I'm mostly annoyed that the ad on the home screen could very easily be a button so I can access Netflix without too many taps or button presses.

Am I the only one who has learned how to tune-out advertising?

We pay for movies and get ads before and during (prominently displayed logos, etc) the movie. Some of us pay for cable which has ads all over the place. None of this is going to change so don't let it get to you

As somebody who reads gaming sites I still see ads for game related stuff that I wasn't aware of on the dashboard. Now imagine what kind of information is getting feed to the average Xbox user about stuff to play and watch on their console.

And most of the "ads" are game/marketplace related aside from a random shoe/deodorant ad which you aren't forced to interact with.

When they start forcing us to watch videos when we pop up the guide button then we can talk about them going too far.

Ever rent the bluray version of Inception? You get a several minute-long unskippable ad during the beginning of it. It completely locks out your ability to push a button and fast forward through it; and the media industry wants to make it illegal to skip them.

When there is no constant revenue stream, especially through subscription, yeah ads are a great way to keep cost down.

LIVE has no excuse. And they don't just put up any ad thats willing to pay. They cater pretty hard to greasy gluttonous shut in types, because they like to spend $$ on that stuff.

You're not looking hard enough then. Screw "reality," there are so many fun scripted shows on these days. Just off the top of my head: Justified, How I Met Your Mother, Community, Parks and Rec., Damages, It's Always Sunny, Children's Hospital, Modern Family, Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy, 30 Rock, Bones, South Park, Leverage, etc. Most of those are even available on Hulu and Netflix too, if you've already "pulled the plug."

Some good reality TV in my opinion: Sons of Guns, The Ultimate Fighter, American Chopper Jr vs Sr, Swamp People & Top Shot.

Some of my favorite TV Shows: Sons of Anarchy, Law & Order SVU, Prime Suspect (amazing), Person of Interest, Ancient Aliens, Fringe, Terra Nova, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Justified, Hell on Wheels, The Walking Dead, On The Case With Paula Zahn, 48 Hours on ID, Hawaii 5-0 & Blue Bloods.

That's just off the top of my head.

Can't wait for that show Alcatraz to start on Fox next month.

You can keep on enjoying it, but I think the Troll actually is in the right for once. Most the stuff you listed I've watched an episode or two of at the bequest of a co-worker or friend because "it's really good/clever/funny/well-written", and I've found it to be complete garbage, formulaic, or predictable. I understand the desire to kick back, relax, and shut your brain off after a day of work or school, but you're listing way too much mental popcorn there to be healthy.

You're still ahead of Johnny5 and his reality shows, mind you.

I don't like comedies or reality tv that much. But, there are a few shows that I mentioned that are fascinating to me.

Sons of Guns - Awesome show. You get to the process of creating and restoring complete weapon systems for Law Enforcement, Defense Contractors & Civillans. Maybe you aren't the tinkering or gun type.

American Chopper - I had my first motorcycle when I was 8 and have had a love affair ever since. There is a real enjoyment for me in seeing the fabrication process from start to finish. The "family drama" aspect really isn't something I care for but there is a certain element that tune in just for that and I put up with it.

Swamp People - I have a real respect for people who make their living off of & eat exclusively from the land their ancestors called home. Would I ever want to do it? Hell no and that's also part of the appeal. I guarantee when the monetary system crashes the people who can live off the land are going to survive the longest.

Ultimate Fighter - I'm a huge fan of all combat sports and while I don't like the behavior or group living dynamics of the participants it's still great to see these guys earn their shot at glory in the UFC. Plus I get to see 1 or 2 high quality free fights a week.

Top Shot - Goes back to my love of weapons systems. Go try and do the stuff these guys make look easy. It's marksmanship at it's best. I enjoy trying to replicate what I see in the show ... With little success.

It's easy to point a finger and say my or Tuna's taste in television is garbage. Why not put out your favorite shows and open yourself up for criticism from some Internet jackoff? It's easy to be the bully and throw out glittering generalities without adding anything substantive to the conversation. What's hard is putting yourself out there for everyone else to see and not caring.

So mr all knowing god of tv ... What is it that us peeons aren't watching that'd improve the size of our tiny brains?

BTW I also love that show Brad Meltzers Decoded.

TLDR - Add something of merit to the discussion other than vitriolic grandstanding.

Are there are seriously ads when you turn on your Xbox now? Like, actual video ads? Can someone fill me in, because that sounds unbelievably ridiculous.

@Colin It's not any different than it has ever been. A video plays in a small little box on the screen, and audio will only play if you highlight that box. I remember in the NXE they were there, and I think they were in the Marketplace section of the Blades. Not really even worth the effort to "block" them.

Just a few tiles of ads on the dashboard. You will only see them if you want to navigate the dash for whatever reason. Just liked ads on a site really, they are noticeable but they dont get in the way.
