He just stated 2 weeks ago that MMOs are slowly dying...and now he wants to make one? Yeah, lost all credibility there buddy.

@LordPoncho

He lost all credibility when Tabula Rasa tanked and, instead of doing the intelligent thing of staying on Terra Firma to help work on the game and everything post-release, decided to hop in his silly little rocket and fly off to let the game slowly drown as it went under.

Am I alone in thinking that d-bag should be kept away from games as long as possible? He's the kiss of death and he's a tool to boot. Sure he used to be great but he's become a joke and is out of touch with modern realities.

He's a waste of space(pun intended). Why anyone would care about an arrogant douche who's last successful game came out 20 years ago is beyond me.

Or 6 if you consider City of Villains a success.

How about bringing Tabula Rasa back and making it free-to-play? I bought the CE because it looked so cool (at about $20, granted) and never got to play the damned thing.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I guess you really are a Jawmubcger.

While I like mmo's and online versions of RPG franchises. I wish some dev's would go back to focusing on the franchises themselves. Because of this I am still giving Sega an evil eye over not releasing a true Phantasy Star 5.

I hear you about neglecting those single-player RPG franchises. I wish someone would make a new Elder Scrolls game or maybe a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII.

Bigger was not better when it came to the Ultima series. Ultimas IV-VII had some great moments, and I was genuinely hooked on U5 back in the day. But from Ultima VIII onwards, the franchise turned to crap, and these days the brand is mud. Trying to bring it back as an MMO again is just silly.

Wow.. so much hate. Come on guys.. This is Lord British! If he can add something new to the MMO field then let him! I agree, Tabula Rasa could have been made F2P but I think politics got in the way. Respect your elders!

@commonperson Something? Dude, your obviously too young to remember what video games, and RPG's in particular were like Prior to things like, Bioshock, Wing Commander, etc. The man built one of the greatest video game companies in the industry and could have gone the way of Blizzard entertainment if he hadn't sold out to EA. EA is the true evil here.

I am saddened he's even talking to these jerks. They took his company, along with some of the greatest franchises in gaming history and dragged them through the mud.

He should just get the rights back to his franchises if possible and build a new team to bring them back. But that's never going to happen. EA is full of Suits now, and they will never do Ultima justice. I to agree that after ultima 8 the series went down hill, and the horrid mismanagement took the first true MMO and left a sour taste in the mouth of any true Ultima fan.

World of Warcraft is what Ultima Online should have become, but they stuck to the isometric top down view way too damned long and now it's just a joke.

But Richard Garriot is a pioneer in the video gaming industry, just as Blizzard and others are. Show some respect next time you speak his name, he's one of the reasons that true story telling exists in video games today.

If they bring back Ultima Online with a sequel it damn well better not have cutscenes and quest lines. The thing that made Ultima so great is that it was a sandbox where you had to forge your own adventure. But if Bioware-Mythic's bastardization of the current Ultima Online is any indication this will be an abomination.

Years ago, EA was working on a really ambitious UO2 project, but the word was it was canceled because EA didn't want to split the UO player base or shut down U01. And the result was that they steadily lost more and more players to other games that were trying new things in the MMO market.

Damn, if you hadn't mentioned it, I would've totally forgotten that UO2 was ever a thing that existed. I'm surprised it isn't mentioned in the article.

I've certainly dug some Ultima over the years, but lets be honest, the setting itself is just generic fantasy\medieval. Nothing remotely unique enough to get hung up over holding onto the IP. What is special about the Ultimas is how the setting was realized, the approach he took to turning the setting into an interactive experience.

If Garriott wants to make another awesome game he hardly needs the Ultima IP to do it. He should come up with something else. It could even be another generic fantasy world, if that's what he's into, without infringing on Ultima IP.

Ultima not Unique? How wrong you are!! "From Darkest Dungeons to Deepest Space!" What other game has dungeons AND space in it! Besides Spelljammer, and who remembers that anyway?

I can't remember any other game that made me crawl through 9 interminable dungeon levels just to get rocket fuel that I didn't need.

I would honestly love to see this happen but I don't think it would be done right. They would implement modern dumbed-down gameplay into it just like every new MMO out today.

I guess all I really want is UO pre-trammel with updated graphics.

I would love to see this happen as well.. Except I have this gut feeling that it's going to be Ultima On Facebook-- Not really too much of a fan of this social nonsense.

Which is a shame, because mage/knight, gm'ing every skill, maxing animal taming to get nightmares, and pvping on the bridge of britannia is some of my favorite moments in gaming ever. Too bad it will probably never feel like that again..

FWIW Garriott went to space after TR to try to generate hype for his game--Least that was the official response. I could see that, i mean dude WENT TO SPACE for his space game lol.

I have faith in Garriott and would love to see him return to form. By this I mean Alkalabeth or U4 style--Pre Ultima7 even. Im talking about space ships, martian dreams, SAVAGE FRONTIERS lol. Ultima has a special place for me :P

I'd rather they get him on-board for a remake of the entire series.

Seeing the numbers Skyrim is selling, an updated Ultima would be good competition.

Seeings how nobody in this comments thread is forgetting Tabula Rasa, I'll bet EA isn't, either. I could see EA thinking UO2 isn't a bad idea at all, then kicking Garriott curbside while they bring in more competent devs.
Regardless of what I said there though, I don't think another high-fantasy type mmo is a good idea. SW:TOR is launching, providing folks with the sci-fi niche that Tabula Rasa screwed up at, and WoW is just about insurmountable right now. There's nothing Garriott could come up with that would compete with either.

Dude should just take his lawsuit earnings and retire to a quiet life in the countryside, watching Bob Ross videos and painting away into oblivion.

How would you recreate Ultima?

Make it overhead diablo style but MMORPG?

Actually, that sounds kinda good. With the right designers, you could make the game a league of legends overhead graphical style but a real MMORPG with all of the old mechanics and design reinvented with modern day innovations.

I hope they make a deal, I would invest my money in it.
